  • @SupaaPerfect

    Kurdish?!

This is Hindustani, spoken by 500 Million people around the whole world. -__-

  • @SupaaPerfect :Kurdish?

    unaware dickhead.

  • What an awesome song :D

  • REHMAN magic

  • i remember seeing Bombay Dreams on stage in March of 2004 when this song was part of the performance. imagine my surprise when i heard it again at the beginning of this movie!

  • The juxtaposition of this song (which has very mystical lyrics) with this film was just an epic move on Spike Lee's part. I think it made the film unique.

  • 5:10 is the best part of the song. That solo is perfect.

  • Brilliant music and brilliant movie, my new "wake up music", thank you

  • the movie is simply amazing

  • For those looking for a context: this is a secular version of a sufi hymn by Bulleh Shah who lived in what is now Pakistan in the 18th century and wrote in Urdu and other local languages. Indian Bollywood’s A.R. Rehman (Oscar winner for music in Slumdog Millionare) set it to music in 1998 for a movie called “Dil Se” (From The Heart). A BBC World Service poll claims it is the 9th most popular song worldwide. It caught Spike Lee's attention when the musical Bombay Dreams was on Broadway in 2005

  • I agree with the song. The Urdu language rocks. Nothing comes close to it as a mode of high poetic and mystical expression.

  • Excellent movie...........but why the jaldi jaldi music ? There are much better scores to be had

  • @Ollfie Your a close-minded Idiot, I think this song goes very well with the film.

  • @EurofighterVsRaptor Close-minded ?......that I question an Indian score on a Western film? I can just imagine what Bollywoods reaction would be if some one sticks on The Sex Pistols or AC/DC on just one of their movies

  • @Ollfie I think that it's a good thing that industries from all over the world should share their own unique music styles, surely it will ease racial differences and make us all realise were all just human.

  • @EurofighterVsRaptor I agree... but with the exception, that Bollywood will not accept the wests culture as far as their movie industry goes.

  • @Ollfie Yeh I agree. It's a pity. =-(

  • @Ollfie actually i'm pretty sure Bollywood does accept western culture in their films they incorporate a lot of western culture in their movies

  • @Ollfie

what are you talking about? they already accept a lot of western culture. do you even watch bollywood movies?

  • @mistazista

and thats why Bollywood is trash right now. But its always good to know that there are many other Indian Studios beside Bollywood.

  • Watch the original video of Chaiyan Chaiyan - the Indian version. It rocks man!

  • i was searching for chaiya chaiya priginal video.. n accidentally came across this vid...gosh i dint knw this track is being used as the opening credit of an english movie...great...this song is mind blowing...i was just 7 yrs whn Dil Se released..but a great fan of the song since thn...it is sooo foot tapping.. :)

  • This song is originally from the bollywood film "Dil Se" :\.... but either way fuckin awesome song!!!

  • i am from ny!! i moved to north carolina 10 years ago and this song and movie makes me soooooo home sick. this video is not the opening scene of the movie where they drive from brooklyn to the wall street area in manhattan. i am an italian-american, but witnessed the best and worst from EVERY race. i miss every real nyer!! i used to love omar's famous falefel cart on 6th ave and 55th street. i used to go by his cart every day to say hello, he was my friend!!!!!

He whose head is in the shadow of love

will have heaven beneath his feet. he

Whose head is in the shadow of love, will Walk in the shadow.

Walk in heaven, walk in the shadow

  • This is synced very well.

  • I wish there was a remix version of this song I saw Inside Man twice to listen to this song.

  • @rileyandstella you know the song is from dil se right?

  • the movie is very inspirational ahaha

  • this is one of my Fav movies of all time ..

  • @dreamafia Love this song! I can't get it out of my head. Suddenly I want to go to India, and truly understand...

  • @andysoxking :Understand India?Mate,I was born & raised in India. It's more diverse than europe the continent.huge number of languages,1000+ dialects, hindus, muslims, sikhs & christians, except blue-eyed blondes pretty much every race in the world for all practical purposes, terribly poor people living around the richest people in the world. It's shocking for foreigners.

    google-neil mukesh,baichung bhutia,bosco-caesar,aishwarya rai,irfan khan,navjot sidhu for a negligible sample of our diversity.

  • MrMaidenAddict, thank you for some informations about this song. Great help!

  • Great Movie. Clive Owen is one of my favorite actors. Perfect song for it too.

  • For those interested:

    - This song was composed by A.R. Rahman and sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi

-The song was originally featured in the Indian movie "Dil Se".

-The word "Chaiyya" means "shadow" or "shade", and it says that those living in the shadow of love find paradise

-The Rahman-Singh duo were successful once again when they got together for the song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack - bagging an Oscar for best original song and score

  • @MrMaidenAddict Thanks for the great info!

  • loved the movie and song is brill xxx

  • okai love the song, and love the start, and love the movie..

with that said the songs about love, looking at the opening lines which someone translated for me was "he who walks in the shadow of love, will have paradise beneath his feet"

soooo why did they play this in this movie? lol

    anyhoot love it XD

  • @Razagul319 because when Denzel's character speaks to the "Robber", they have a short discussion about his love life...The diamond he found in his pocket at the end of the movie...It just clinches it!

He was being judged for something he didn't do, and in the end, he gets the girl, and a big fat diamond for her, and he gets promoted to First Detective, just like he said he would. The case goes away, but everyone wins. (Except the Mayor)..poor guy.

  • Comment removed

  • @daf867 Why are the ignorant not able to spell?

  • @syeddy4life because the song is fucking epic awesome and catchy :p

  • @syeddy4life why can't a hindi song play in an english movie?

  • @syeddy4life Cuz Spike Lee fucking loved it! And, unlike Hollywood, every Hindi movie comes out with an original soundtrack...most hollywood movies copy the background score eg. The Hangover

  • It's From The Movie DIL SE

    LOVE THAT MOVIE

  • Great music. Please listen!

  • Denzel, Jodie and actions gander clive

    incredible spike lee address

history not to mention super amazing

  • Outsdanding, One of the greatest movies made.

  • The song is based on lyrics by Bulleh Shah, a famous Indian Muslim Punjabi poet. The song's music is composed by A.R. Rahman.

  • The use of this song with the movie is funny, though I like it. xD

  • How?

  • @princepersia1 The movie is about a very well-planned bank robbery; the song is about falling in love. You can try to make a connection, or you can laugh like I did and find it funny.

  • Great movie and this song is amazing. Clive was always once step ahead of Denzel! I could watch this movie over and over and still be amazed.

  • Spike Lee = Genius. Great acting, great direction, great tune! Inside Man is fantastic!

  • COOL!!! NICE!!! WUJU!!!

  • When I first went to see this movie, this totally threw me for a loop, but in a good way. It shows that at least one American filmmaker realizes there are other cultures besides the American culture out there, and that they all have something to contribute.

  • Another great movie whit Denzel and the song is very nice

  • i was surprised that they used this song for this movie and still trying to figure out why. perhaps the song deserves it.

  • That's what you call good world music!

  • @amazingdany world= indian

  • Almost any non-Western music is considered "world music" (to generalize).

  • You have much to learn about music, judging from that comment. Much.

  • @amazingdany didnt you know? everything is indian.

    made in india.

    hhahahaha

  • wat is the song from that nerdy business guys ringtone from his cell phone and then he gets beat up can some please tell me!

  • the song is gold digger by kanye west

  • i love this film

  • Great song by A.R.Rahman

  • It is from an indian movie Dil se...

  • The song is superb, indeed. You can't help but throb inside with it. I wonder what chayya means. Nothing to do with chay=tea, right?

  • @despletina, chayyia is a name for the sound that the ankle bracelet makes when walking. Here the singer and lyricist is using it as a metaphore for love. It get's trickier to explain from here on. Hope this helps!

  • Thank you. I think I saw somewhere somebody saying it means "shadow". It somehow didn't make much sense, I mean if you try to relate it with the dancing. So much joy and aliveness, how can that refer to darkness and stealth?

  • Haha... agreed! Actually the word for shadow is "CHAYYA". So phonetically it is very close to "Chayyia". I can see some one making that mistake.

  • Right. One more question, please. Does it matter where you place the vowel i? I mean, in front or after the double y. (In my language, y and i are phonetically identical, you know.) Oh, and chayyia is a Hindi word or an Urdu one?

  • Actually, I was loosely translating it into english script and there is no set way of spelling it. Different people will spell is it differently. If I really work hard on it, this is how I would spell it - Chaeeya. When pronouncing, I would break it into three parts: Cha - ee - ya. When pronouncing the "ee", it is not a flat e sound. There is a nasal sound to it as well.

  • Oh, also I cannot say it with authority but I think it is a Hindi word.

  • Thank you, you've been most helpful!

  • No Problem!

  • its urdu's word..its not chaiya ..it chaiyan....which maeans any vehicle ..in this song train is used as chaiyan...!!!

  • It's chaiyya, it's another word meaning shadow

generally hindi songs steal tremendously from urdu (it's because urdu sounds better...to be honest)

    but here it means shadow

    like shadow of love

  • chhaiyan here actually means shadow and not the sound of the anklets. the words of the song are from sufi poetry and it begins with the woman saying "he whose head is in the shadow of love has paradise beneath his feet". and then the man says "so we travel in the shadow. in the shadow, shadow.. (chhaiyan chhaiyan...)"

the sound of the word chhaiyan can also be used to mean the sound of anklets, but that is not the actual translation.

for the full translation of the song:

    watch?v=AOOlgbfFy3k

  • Shadow of love sound very much like poetry, indeed. AND sufi! Thank you, geodesicks.

  • @despletina : you're welcome. someone needs to explain to me what it is doing in this movie. i see no connection. :-/

  • @geodesicks Alas, I haven't watched the movie. I was just going for the song (heard about it in a local cultural magazine, some time ago, in a different context, too long to explain here). OK, I know the general plot, that's why I don't want to waste my time watching it, and I agree with you: this song here is like putting Buddha in the ring with Hulk Hogan. Or Bugs Bunny in the same film with Chuck Norris, AND making it serious, not a comedy!

  • @geodesicks Its fits the movie perrty well, have you seen the movie?

  • I love the ending of this film and not to give it a way i love the last scene where He just looks at the ring perfect ending

  • i actually found it fit perfectly in the intro....

thanks spike lee, for letting me in on such a fucking awesome track...
