  • they should make a 'love' button strictly for elliott smith songs

  • @thestudlybudly ,they defnately should.

  • Have you checked out all of his stuff yet? You probably got sick of it and had to take a break, just like a lot of us have. But I'm sure you're still a strong fan!

  • This, Dancing on the Highway, and Stickman. Easily my favorite rare ES songs.

  • love the back-up vocals, adds a nice depth to the song. Is there an acoustic version of this song anywhere that he did?

  • this used to be one of my favorite songs back in the day, brings back amazing memories to me

  • "the invisible man whos always changing clothes" .............

  • devil/angel

  • what does it say on his arm?????

  • @middleclassgangster it says 'Kali the destroyer'

  • @williampatrickcorgan

Freaky...for a few moments i thought it was my name, Kail

  • all his songs are perfect.

  • wow

  • I just discovered this man. Cant believe he's dead. I'm gonna soak up all his songs like a sponge.

  • @stratocaster539 you are in for a treat :D

  • @sk8tolive123 no joke! brilliant talent.

  • @stratocaster539 i heard one track a few years ago and the next day went and bought most of his albums. i never regretted it,an absolute genius! i put him on a par with the beatles and bob dylan.

  • @bradshawvincent Agreed I have almost come full circle with his stuff and I am still going back to dip into my favourites!

  • @stratocaster539 two others ive grown to love are totally different but have the same integrity are "the swans" (songs of failiure...on you tube) and scott walkers solo albums.

  • @bradshawvincent, they definately should.

  • @stratocaster539: Please do. One of the most brilliant musicians of our time, and a huge influence to me musically.

  • @stratocaster539 I'm sure you've listened to a lot of his stuff by now (your comment was posted over a year ago!) but my one piece of advice would be that if you ever feel depressed, don't listen to Elliott Smith! lol... it makes it worse. But other than that he's a beautiful genius songwriter and it's such a shame he's gone.

  • @SethHesio lol.yeah! Listening to his music can be a 'double edged sword' but hey- that's where the creativity seems to germinate and I guess for a lot of folks it's part of real life so it can kind of help - do you know what I mean?Cheers.

  • @stratocaster539 Yeah totally.. some of his songs really lift you up. This one is a really up beat song, totally. But others like Miss Misery or Between the Bars.. sweet jesus... lol

  • Perfect pop song

  • @sean9802 Perfect song :)

  • @sean9802 this is so true. For years I've thought to myself this was the perfect the pop song.

  • "Time was I was one. Now I'm only the game."

"I don't have the thoughts you want. Just a memory of love I was shown. A vision that turns to stone."

  • @Vamphaery I think you might be right on "Time was I was the one". It's really hard to make out the last word. But the next line is "And I'm all in a cage/First it's all the reaction/Now it's all the rage."

  • @Ekrindul I can't help but hear a "sideways" in there... "time runs sideways, a wire" or "time was sideways, (something)" also I can hear all in a cage or maybe something weirder like " a mole in a cave ". I know it sounds strange but he was also writing songs with the lyrics "ape man in a cave painting on a wall (brand new game)" and "animals painted in the dark on the walls of a cave (confusion)" using the cave painting cave imagery as a metaphor for something.

  • @vuvaladusi Hahaha, I actually got curious and looked up the lyrics on sweetaddy, and it actually has me laughing what they have put down.

"time was i was a wire then a mole in a cake"

Can someone please tell me what the hell that is supposed to mean...?

  • @sk8tolive123 just figured this out, a mole is actually a popular decoration to put on cakes. Like, a candy mole or something made from paste. called mole cakes!

  • @o0ousernameo0o interesting, thanks for the info :P

  • @sk8tolive123

    The actual lyrics are:

"Time was I was a wild .. animal in a cage

First it's all the reaction .. now it's all the rage"

  • @vuvaladusi

Since he was a philosophy major, it wouldn't surprise me if he was making an allusion to Plato's Cave.

He admitted making a reference to kierkegaard with his album title "Either/Or." =)

  • Happiness isn't a very deep emotion. Any song worth listening to is sad.

  • his music speaks to me when no one else will. when my friends of the closest variety don't answer, he still does...

  • Where is this song from?

  • he has a considerable amount of upbeat songs.

i think its a common mistake to say that most of his music resonates sadness or depression.

  • "brand new game" is such an upbeat song. it makes me want to party. i love it!

  • come to think of it, most of his upbeat songs are unreleased. that accounts for the common reputation he has for "sad" songs.

  • I wouldn't say that there is an equilibrium of happy and sad songs. From the seven studio albums of his that I own, I'd have to say that there is only one even remotely "happy" song (Independence Day).......

  • ive heard him say in interviews that his songs have happy moments for him.

i think thats all that matters

  • He seems to make fun of all that in "Suicide Machine." It's a fairly upbeat demo that leaked a short while back, with the instrumental from "Tiny Time Machine."

  • I think what he was brilliant at was faking happy songs.

I mean lots of his songs sound very happy on the surface, LA for instance..sounds upbeat, musicwise.

On the whole though his lyrics are the contrast to the music, they are usually incredibly dark, even if sang in the upbeat manner of the song :D

He was gifted at writing songs, happy or sad is just interpretation and point of view. What the songs are are brilliant slices of scenes and ideas that are lyrically quite amazing!

  • In the Lost and Found is pretty upbeat. Coming Up Roses is sort of happy. LA is really positive. The first two have sad parts though.

  • i don't think it's a misconception that most of his music resonates sadness or depression at all. most of it - MOST, not all - does, lyrically.

  • He may have some considerably upbeat songs, but you have to listen to the words man...the sound has nothing to do with the meaning

  • yeah ive thought about that. but his music never really makes me depressed maybe becaue i can relate to the lyrics so much. idk.

  • oh wow, it sounds so upbeat and hopeful.

All of his music is imbued with sadness, but some sound so expectant, like running towards a hope that feels really, really near, feeling giddy....

    Or something.

  • I LOVE this song.

Beautiful music from a beautiful man...

    :]]

  • ty, makes elliott all the more lovable

  • can you link to the download site... cause I've never seen this and I love it

  • just use a "flv to mp3 converter" such as the "free flv converter" to download this youtube video and convert it into a mp3

  • where is this song from?

  • is the B-side from the Son of Sam single cd and 7".
