The reason why Zelda only uses 2 buttons is because the CD-i only HAS 2 buttons. The other controllers were made to resemble the Genesis and SNES controllers, but essentially all what the 3rd button does is press button 1 and 2 together and the 4th one on the "Touchpad" controller is just button 2 repeated twice.

I knew these games were bad, but they're freaking horrible! I mean, didn't they ever thought of a menu button or something? There were only 2 buttons on the NES, yet the whole system was easier to use than this. And the way Link just neglects his duty and randomly decides to go find Zelda just made remember the perverted Link from the animated series.

Btw, they're called Rubbies since "Ruppies" is copyrighted by Nintendo. That's my guess, at least.

I think the controls should be:

Up - Climb

Down - Crouch

Left/Right - Move Left/Right

Button 1 - Jump

Button 2 - Sword or shoot Power Sword

Button 3 - Open doors

(NEW BUTTON) Start - Open menu/pause screen

If you can't have a start button I guess you could use Up because I think I have played a few games where Up opened doors...
