I am very happy to see you on Youtube. We only have one man at our studio. He takes private lessons. I think it's great that men are getting into this. I'm sure you get lots of crap for being a man who pole dances. I heard one guy ask me about the guy at our studio and saying he doesn't understand this because pole dance is a feminine form of dance. I think men are showing that it can be taken both ways. The tricks are the tricks, style is what makes it masculine or feminine.
@fifimsp Thank You! I agree with you 100%. It's just a pole and the style is whatever the person brings to the art form or to physical fitness. Thanks for being so supportive. By the way, I am one of the many polers on facebook, if you participate in the on-line pole community. /Joel Lessing
@bangbangkitty25 Thanks for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment, Bangbangkitty. The simple reason "why" is because pole is fun and a great workout. And pole is a great social experience, too!
Gosh u r IDIOT. Stop doing what u cannot do, better go digging ur garden. Next time think over what u r putting on a display, is it worth of seeing? There is too much crap here
@nikonenkojulia93 Hi Nikon...everybody has to start learning somewhere...nobody who pole dances or does pole fitness begins as an expert. In the pole community, we use videos for entertainment, learning , and feedback. I'm sorry the video offended you...but thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment. /Joel Lessing or "Poledancefan")
@nikonenkojulia93 Considering you have no videos and no contributions of your own, I can only conclude that you have nothing worth "putting on display". Let people do what they love, and leave out the negativity.
@britte08 Thank You! IT is "BENIE BARALE" by the Senegalese Rhumba band "Orchestre Baobab." They only did 3-4 albums before the founder died...but re-formed in the late 90's. Laurie and I saw them at MIllenium Park live last summer and it was a GREAT time! /Joel Lessing
you know what, keep up the good work. i like many others came to leave a nasty comment but really the world needs more people like yourself. Thanks 5/5
I enjoy watching your practices, etc. You inspire me so much. I'm 54 and started about a year ago off and on. How have you developed so much strength. You mention training videso, which do you prefer?
Thank You! I use Jamilla Deville's Art of Pole (all 5 DVD's)--it's really good. In all fariness, I have lifted weights and been riding bikes all my life. Since my early 20's I try to do 2500 miles on the bike May through October of every year. I fell a little short this year because I got hurt. But don't worry about being strong or muscular. "FitLitteBit" on Studio Veena started at age 52. She is AWESOME--a MILLION times better than me. She was last month's SV interview...
saaaaawhhhhheeeeat! man, you are the best for doing this, AND putting it on youtube. it's people like you that are making our world a more loving, accepting place. keep it up.
There is a long series of narratives in my earleist pole dance videos from 2008 that explains it in detail. The bottom line is that I love the talented and awesome women who pole and I wanted to gain a sense of apprecition of how they do what they do. It's fun...but frustrating at times. Through pole, I have met an interesting and diverse community of women and men across many countries and languages and I enjoy interacting with them on You-Tube and Facebook. Put up a pole and join us!
It can be dangerous and easy to get injured..so if a person has health issues then they should probably check with their doctor. But at some level, probably just about anyone can do SOME aspect of pole. Alena has stated on her website that her oldest student was 80 years old! Some people just enjoy walk and turn around transitions...and jive passes. Even doing that for 5 minutes to a song is enough to make me pass out from exhaustion--and you never even get up on the pole!
Thank You...I think it is from "Orquestre Baobab"...Senegal...in the 1980's or 1990's. It's a little different line-up than the old band--I think the lead gutarist passed away a few years ago.
Hi, Sofhia! Pole acrobatics, as I am sure you know, started out as an exclusively MALE art form..practiced as a martial art (called MALLAKHAMB) in India and China...and later as an acrobatic form of gymnastics in China. Juat a few decades ago,it became a form of erotic, exotic, and expressive dance inthe West. Pole is currently practiced by men and women all over the world. Join the fun...it WONT change your gender...I promise!! Let me know if you give it a try...keep in touch! --Joel
That's not a bad idea...actually I do see quite a fair number of poles inthe bedroom...sometimes just because it's the only room that has tall ceilings...or the person wants to keep it out of view of public areas in the house...or it has the nicest carpet in case of a fall! But you should definitely consider pole as a hobby/dance/sport...it's great exercise. There are many teenagers (as young as 12) in Britain doing gymnastic pole as a fitness sport along with their mom in class or at home.
Yes, it's a great way to practice it. Just one thing to watch for--your knee cap will aim straight at the ground in the set-up. If you are not comfortable with the strength issues, borrow a roller skater's knee pad from one of the kids for the bottom knee..or put down your baby mattress crash pad. It'll save you a knee bash until you get confident.
I think she was a little irritated at first--not so much about the poling, but maybe a little worried about me posting the videos. But I've posted nearly 50 of them now...and since I bend over backwards to keep them family friendly and mostly about exercise, gymnastics, and fitness, I don't think she has a problem with it. Besides, over 23 years of marriage I've been into lots of things--learning French, trying to play guitar, etc... And I am a bit of a fitness nut!
Hi, Jungle Cat! Glad you enjoyed the video..well, unfortunately my desire to eat lots of fatty foods and drink beer isn't so great for my pole fitness project!
Yes...you're probably right about that...although..more men do pole fitness than you might imagine, especially in Britain and Australia. There are even 4-5 posting regularly on You-Tube--and they are actually pretty good at it!
Thanks, Sorwis! To tell you the truth, I look at my own videos and I laugh out loud sometimes, too! Thanks very much for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment...
I'm 48, LOL! It must be the bald head that makes me look like an old fart! There are quite a few men who pole. It's great for supplementing weightlifting and core strength!
Hi, Parasite81! Thanks for stopping by and enjoying the video. I'm not sure why it provokes the response that it is a sick world. It's just pole dancing, nothing more. What do you do for a workout or physical exercise?
Thanks for stopping by and enjoying the video. You might be intrested to know that British poler KT Coates has led the way in organizing world wide record setting pole events--all aimed at Cancer charities (usually Breat Cancer). I really enjoyed your channel page--I see you are a Betty Paige fan and practice yoga. Many of the moves in pole dancing are based upon the Yaga asanas--and even share the smae names. Indeed, the two knees hold behind the knees, horizontal, is called the "Yogini" !!
Bueno Kanfor. I know a little Spanish. But my Spanish is not good. You said the body is not made for dancing on a pole. I disagree with respect. Many sports like gymnastics use bars and poles. In human culture we make hard goals and try to meet our goals. Muchas gracias para mirar mi video, Kanfor!
Oops..last comment did not go through... Yes, if you have the link, I'd love to see it. Johannah, my daughter, saw it on cable but I was out seeing a band, so I missed it. You could PM it to me here...or my e-mail is JOELOWEN at AOL .
Uhh, well the pole is standad electrical conduit hardware--available at any Home Depot ot Menards. I have to warn you, it's not very tasty--it's got sort of a metallic aftertaste. But other than that, it tastes just like chicken, LOL! Thanks for watching my video!
It was pretty amazing--I think a few of the game show networks picked it up as a novelty video. G4 put it on ATTACK OF THE SHOW. I'm a little embarrassed, really, because I think there are so many other wonderful and talented polers who really deserve credit for their work and I don't want to take anything away from that. And besides, my arm is about to fall off from typing so many "Thank You" 's to everyone. But I'm happy to say it one more time--especially to you! Thank You so much!!!
I predicted that you would end up on tv.....I love it!! You go for it.....
Now if they would put that funny one where you hit your knee - that one I replayed a million times laughing....it was so funny (Í'm a bit of a sadist)...LOL
You have the grip right...when your head is in the downward angle, just have the confidence to let your head fall...your body will follow and it will look more fluid!
That sounds like good advice..but I'm always a little nervous about inverting. It took me a long time to get over the fear of falling. That's probably why it takes me so long to master a move.
LOL! Don't do that, Nubian! But consider taking a pole dance taster lesson just to get the feel of what this might be like as a hobby or a fitness sport. It is a fantastic way to build up body strength. Most pole businesses are female owned and I can think of no better way to help our sisters get the respect they deserve!
As someone said below, I think it's great that you're such a good sport and posting your learning-process for others. You are awesome, and you're a hell of a lot better on that pole than i am (and I'm a 21 y/o female). It's funny how all the haters seem to find this stuff long before I do. Almost like their searching for it. Masochism much? Or dare I say--homophobia/changeophobia?
Thanks, Mollination! How long have you been poling? It's a lot easier to learn the moves when you are younger...I think you'll pick it up fast once ou get going! Thanks so much for the nice and supportive comment. I really appreciate it. If you post vids, please send me a PM, so I can subscribe to your channel!
Well, that's flattering...can I get paid if that happens, LOL! I would be happy if the wonderful ladies who teach pole dance got 20 million new students. THese women are awesome, hard working, talented people. Please consider joining a pole studio for a lesson or a demonstration. Pole is the future of Fitness!
Thank You! Somebody will have to tell me who Tobias FUnk is--I am not that savvy about current culture--as I am a 48 year old balding fat guy--a little out of touch with current events!
Talk Soup? I love that program...my daughter watches it religiously, LOL! I'm sure she'll be the first to call me if it ends up on the show. Anyway, I 'm not interested in being on TV--just highlighting the wonderful acheivements of the beautiful ladies and talented pole dancers around the world!
Hi, 21leftcenter...thanks for watching and enjoying my video. I don't wet the bed, and I am not sure what a tinkerbell is--but I do enjoy the build up in cre strength that su[pplemnts my weightlifting, swimming, and running. Pole had helped me be a bettere all around athlete. Do you work out or enjoy any forms of exercise of physical activity?
Hi, Cillian...Thanks for watching and enjoying the video. In pole dance and gymnastics, hand direction and placement are very important. When amove turns the cody through a range of motion, you want the final grip to be strong and not expose the poler to a risk of falling.
Hi, LazyLimonada...i'm sorry you didn't enjoy the video. There are many lovely ladies on you-tube who are much betterpole dancers than me. I hope you will watch their videos with an open heart and mind, and give them a fair chance at getting a supportive comment to acknowledge their hard work, discipline, and talent!
I explain that very early onward in my video log from back in July.I had watched thousands of pole dance videos and made judgments about how good or bad they were or whatever. If I was going to talk the talk, I needed to walk the walk to earn their respect. I have a better appreciation of how hard they work and I hope I have earned their respect--if only just a little bit
Hi, Mrstrone! Well, I've gotten hundreds of them--I think the video ran on a television show on cable. I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about it, but soem of the comments have been a little mean spirited...
I found this as droll initially as anybody else, and really, in the context I found this vid readers were invited to laugh but after reading how even handed and a good sport you are in the comments I'm really impressed (: keep it up ^____^ It must be hard work. I'm not really confident about my physical abilities, but maybe I'd like to give it a try someday.
Well, actually I am using Men's NIKE golfers. They are made of real leather, with very smooth uppers. They cost a fortune, but I got a damaged pair real cheap. Use a pair of pliers to rip out the cleats. I have a home-made pole with very sharp and dangerous fittings at the bottom, so I can't pole barefooot. Many of the ladies who are also exotic dancers do prefer to dance in boots, it makes some aerial work easier, but other tricks more difficult... Thanks for watching!
Hmmm...I am unfamiliar with this word. Is that a reference to the shorts? Polers usually try to expose as much skin to the pole for friction as possible. More skin is more friction and that means less chance of falling off the pole and breaking your neck, LOL! Mats are a godd idea, too!
Thank You, Michelle! I see we both agree Moulin Rouge was a great movie. My favorite sequence was the when they did the scene to the Beatles' song. Then again, I have a soft spot for redheads, after all, I married one, LOL!
guess it's harder than it looks....i saw this girl at a strip club one time and you would not believe what she could do! (i'm a girl and i'm totally serious.) she wasn't very attractive but she was an amazing pole da

I'm probably not good enough to take requests--but I think Alice Cooper is an awesome musician!

There is no god!!! now excuse me while I go dip my entire head in a vat of acid.
NubianGoddez 2 years ago
Poledancefan 2 years ago
As someone said below, I think it's great that you're such a good sport and posting your learning-process for others. You are awesome, and you're a hell of a lot better on that pole than i am (and I'm a 21 y/o female). It's funny how all the haters seem to find this stuff long before I do. Almost like their searching for it. Masochism much? Or dare I say--homophobia/changeophobia?
mollination 2 years ago
Thanks, Mollination! How long have you been poling? It's a lot easier to learn the moves when you are younger...I think you'll pick it up fast once ou get going! Thanks so much for the nice and supportive comment. I really appreciate it. If you post vids, please send me a PM, so I can subscribe to your channel!

Seconded: this is already going viral (incoming via Huffington Post).
jmanooch 2 years ago
Well, that's flattering...can I get paid if that happens, LOL! I would be happy if the wonderful ladies who teach pole dance got 20 million new students. THese women are awesome, hard working, talented people. Please consider joining a pole studio for a lesson or a demonstration. Pole is the future of Fitness!

Talk Soup? I love that program...my daughter watches it religiously, LOL! I'm sure she'll be the first to call me if it ends up on the show. Anyway, I 'm not interested in being on TV--just highlighting the wonderful acheivements of the beautiful ladies and talented pole dancers around the world!

21leftcenter 2 years ago
Hi, 21leftcenter...thanks for watching and enjoying my video. I don't wet the bed, and I am not sure what a tinkerbell is--but I do enjoy the build up in cre strength that su[pplemnts my weightlifting, swimming, and running. Pole had helped me be a bettere all around athlete. Do you work out or enjoy any forms of exercise of physical activity?

cillian1947 2 years ago
Hi, Cillian...Thanks for watching and enjoying the video. In pole dance and gymnastics, hand direction and placement are very important. When amove turns the cody through a range of motion, you want the final grip to be strong and not expose the poler to a risk of falling.

LazyLimonada 2 years ago 3
Hi, LazyLimonada...i'm sorry you didn't enjoy the video. There are many lovely ladies on you-tube who are much betterpole dancers than me. I hope you will watch their videos with an open heart and mind, and give them a fair chance at getting a supportive comment to acknowledge their hard work, discipline, and talent!
Poledancefan 2 years ago
What I wanna know is why are you interested in this to begin with?
LazyLimonada 2 years ago
I explain that very early onward in my video log from back in July.I had watched thousands of pole dance videos and made judgments about how good or bad they were or whatever. If I was going to talk the talk, I needed to walk the walk to earn their respect. I have a better appreciation of how hard they work and I hope I have earned their respect--if only just a little bit
Poledancefan 2 years ago
Still. That's creepy.
LazyLimonada 2 years ago
Good job Joel! keep up the great work!
I hate these stupid comments from idiots!!
mrstrone 2 years ago
Hi, Mrstrone! Well, I've gotten hundreds of them--I think the video ran on a television show on cable. I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about it, but soem of the comments have been a little mean spirited...

I found this as droll initially as anybody else, and really, in the context I found this vid readers were invited to laugh but after reading how even handed and a good sport you are in the comments I'm really impressed (: keep it up ^____^ It must be hard work. I'm not really confident about my physical abilities, but maybe I'd like to give it a try someday.

agree totally with what tensabaishonen just said. Good on you for being such a good sport. :)

you need pvc boots, they are the real trick of the trade.
Tronsdontdieg 2 years ago
Well, actually I am using Men's NIKE golfers. They are made of real leather, with very smooth uppers. They cost a fortune, but I got a damaged pair real cheap. Use a pair of pliers to rip out the cleats. I have a home-made pole with very sharp and dangerous fittings at the bottom, so I can't pole barefooot. Many of the ladies who are also exotic dancers do prefer to dance in boots, it makes some aerial work easier, but other tricks more difficult... Thanks for watching!

It puts the nut-cutters on and then it dances on its pole.
andreaturtle 2 years ago 3
Hmmm...I am unfamiliar with this word. Is that a reference to the shorts? Polers usually try to expose as much skin to the pole for friction as possible. More skin is more friction and that means less chance of falling off the pole and breaking your neck, LOL! Mats are a godd idea, too!
