  • Beautiful. Many thanks for posting.

  • Sung with care and consummate technical polish, as is typical of Mr. Scholl's work. An interesting contrast is Erik Kurmangaliev's performance (watch?v=p5FbkqINL3I); though he lacks the sonic perfection of Scholl, I think he does a better job of evoking the desperation and despair of the character on stage.

  • I agree with Emily Greene. The part of Orfeo should be sung by a man. And if he happens to be as handsome as Andreas Scholl, so much the better!

  • Absolutely amazing! What a voice!

  • which is the antithesis of its intention

  • Voce molto pulita e nitida

  • Andreas, as always, is as close to perfection as a singer can get, in my opinion. Stephanie Blythe is an absolutely wonderful singer, no argument there. But the Met production of Orfeo ed Euridice was disappointing to me. In particular, the tempo of this aria was ridiculously fast. Not even Andreas is singing it as fast as Stephanie was asked to sing it. And for a singer with as big a voice as Stephanie has, singing the penultimate aria of the opera that quickly had to be frustrating for her.

  • I remember hearing Scholl sing this aria on the Met broadcast a few years back. It brought me to tears. It still does.

  • God bless you...Andreas!

  • Now this is how the aria should be performed.. A good countertenor, male sopranist should be the only ones to perform the role of Orfeo, instead of contraltos. What a beautiful voice Mr. Scholl has, like a boy soprano. :D

  • absolutely beatiful :)

  • I'm in ectasy! Thanks a million for posting this!

  • *happy sigh* How strange to find this so lovely when it's so damned SAD.

    It's wonderful, though ...

  • How can you even think to compare those two different singing voices ... YOu are comparing Apples with Pears!!!

  • there is not even a baritone version!! probably is the countertenor/contralto(alto castrato)version, because the tenor version is probably high for a baritone...anyway that is not repertoire for a baritone! so is pointless to compare...is like Sarah Brightman or any other soprano singing Nessun Dorma or worst a light tenor singing the queen of the night

  • We have a production of Orfeo ed Euridice in Bratislava's National Theatre (directed by Polish director Mariusz Treliński) and the role is transposed down an octave and is sung by a baritone singer...

  • Yeah the role is transposed originally 2 octaves down from the Ricordi version for alto ,that is based in the Berlioz version for contralto, but original versions(Gluck versions) are for alto castrato(but the original opera was for a soprano castrato) and the french one for haute-contre.

So there is no even a baritone version...and again a medium low register you can change the key and suits totally a contralto

  • la bella interpretazione! maravigliosa! brava!

  • contra tenor ou meio soprano? Seja o que for, voz bem afinada ! Barabéns !!

  • someone please send this link to the met so they can recast orfeo.

  • met's ofreo was brilliant this season

  • Absolutely! It aired in my local cinema and I had to go see it twice, it was simply fantastic, Stephanie Blythe was magnificent, not to mention James Levin!

I've been looking for CD with the recording, but alas, no luck.

  • I agree. Stephanie Blythe was great.

  • RISPOOOONNNNDI!!! belle voix, pleine d'émotion et pureté ,j'adore Andreas Scholl; se me estruje el corazòn al escuchar ésta bella interpretaciòn!!!

  • DAMN!!!!!! WONDABA!!!!! BRAVO!!!

  • Wow, Andreas, what a perfectionist as I already know you from the concerts in Munich.

    Christian

  • There are no more Castrati. The last Sistine castrato was Alessandro Moreschi, the only castrato to have made recordings. He retired officially in 1913, and died in 1922.

  • is a castarto alive his name is "cecilia bartoli" is a joke. saludos desde caracas venezuela.

  • I have heard his recordings. The sound quality is about what could be expected from 1903-1904. These recordings are not representative of what castrati were capable of because Alessandro was a church singer, whose requirements are quite different from opera and theater. Also Alessandro's style is from the late 19th century.

  • Zawsze bije mi serce, gdy tego słucham!

  • prachtige stem - zo moet Orfeus ook klinken. Zeker niet gezongen worden door een vrouw!

  • Excellent. To the comment below: Countertenors sing in the falsetto range some where between an alto to a mezzo. A true castrati can sing in the soprano range.

  • Not always,Farinelli was a soprano, but Senesino or Carestine were altos so not all the castrati were soprani. And real countertenors don't use falsetto they use head voice(pretty much like any female voice) cause in real countertenors the vocal chords are not calcified, the countertenors are not countertenors are falsettistiwho sing in falsetto with very small voices,no power,no harmonics and uncapable to sing an entire opera or fill an opera house

  • Maybe you could go and ask him.

  • Well, if you can get hold of his medical records and prove that he IS, the good luck to you! However there are quite a few men today whose voice developed (of failed to develop?) in a similar way, WITHOUT being physically tampered with. He may be one of very few, but he's certainly not alone.

  • he makes me fly. weeee~

  • That is a matter of taste. I dislike the interpretation of Michael Chance. This was not done dramatically, but hysterically to my taste. And the voice of Andreas is incomparably more beautiful.

  • The voice of Andreas is REALLY beautiful, yes, I agree..besides, he is a very fine musician... What a great singer!

  • Lovely indeed! But not quite as dramatically moving as that of Michael Chance in his 1991 Sony recording of 'Orfeo & Euridice'. Scholl sounds best to me when he sings in German. His Baroque German songs are wonderfully sung!

  • Glorious! This is such a magnificent rendition of one of my favourite arias of all time. :D
