  • He played it with respect,,,,

  • Get in!

  • perfect place for playing.. exc!!

  • Well there's a lot of evidence that the saxons just ethnically cleansed most of the Britons, why would Welsh mean 'alien' if they were integrated. Some stains don't come off.

  • you're all liars....Scotland, Wales and England are all one unified nation....before the Roman invasion the ancients named it [Albion]

  • Yes, but the English were not even in the place at that time. They were still various Germanic trives (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) living in northern Germany and Denmark at that point in history.

You are referring to the ancient Britons whose descendents are today the Welsh and the Scots to a certain extent. You cant draw parallels between two millenia ago and today.

  • No, the English are also Celtic, do you think all those Britons that lived in England just buggered of to Wales and Cornwall? They married the incoming Saxons and adopted their language.

  • Beautiful! I'm still learning highland pipes. I can't wait till I get better at them and start playing the full set of pipes. :)

  • 90 minute patriots, the lot o' ye

  • Those things are tuned perfectly, mine just refuse to get in tune.

  • Haunting - sends shivers down my spine.

  • Scotland despite them. We will never submit to English tyranny.

Not as long as 100 remain alive.

  • BillDFC, if only that were true.

  • wat are u talking about english tyranny?

were part of the same country.

  • Different countries.

  • @BillDFC Not as long as 1 Scot remains alive.

  • What kind of pipes are those?

  • Great Highland bagpipe

  • I know that but whats the maker like Henderson, Nail, McCallum?

  • look like McCallum to me

  • Wow that's great music

  • fuck sake guys, no point arguing about this is there? it happened and not one of your points of view matters in the big picture does it? what would these people think if they knew that your arguing about their death and whether it was worthy or decent or not of their choosng, they knew what they were doing.

  • Seems like a beautiful Scottish summer day.

  • thats a factor 30 day up here mate

  • I didnt say that no English soldiers died at Flodden, the English lost around 1500 men. They fought and won a great victory, i still dont see how i insult their memory by saying that.

What do you mean by 'not really done wrong' They were part of an invasion, this wasnt a peaceful affair. Most Northern English people would have hated and lived in fear of the Scots. They were fighting for their homes and families, i dont think empathy with the Scots would have been the first thing on their minds.

  • where can i find the sheet music for this???

  • September 9th 1513.

An outnumbered English army comprised mainly of the common folk of Northern England, fought and defeated the finest and largest Scottish army to ever leave Scotland. A great day in English history.

  • Yes, Big Chief, you're entitled to your gloat.

At least in those days soldiers were not ordered into battle whilst the leaders stood and watched. Credit where it's due, James charged in, very recklessly, it seems. A rush of blood to the head, maybe, I don't know.

But the actions by that one leader who also lost his life meant great suffering for the Scottish people who it is reckoned all lost someone at Flodden.

  • King James knew what he was doing when he walked into England with 50'000 men. He thought that his state of the art Cannon and Pikes would be enough to overcome whatever force the English could muster against him,he thought that his numbers would tell.

In the end he was out-generaled by an aging Earl and his men out-fought by English soldiers equiped with what was basically a modified farm tool.

The English fought to defend their homes and lands, just as the Scots had done at Bannockburn.

  • Yes, but still a brave, reckless move that gave him eternal honour. Unlike the poor guys who died because of it. How many know any of their names?

  • You should be ashamed because they fought because they had to not out of choice. I studied this war and believe me men were threatened with lose of land if they didn't fight on both sides. Plus it was not the largest and finest army ever to leave Scotland, do abit of research before you make comments which weren't needed. So ok James was abit reckless but he had a true heart. Just remember you don't insult us(Scottish) you insult the memory of thousands who died. ON BOTH SIDES.

  • Please, do you actually believe that the entire Scottish army was forced into fighting. The reason the army was so large was because so many men WILLINGLY answered the calls to arms. James was a seen as a warrior King and they wanted to fight for him.

Right Ok, so not including the modern period it was the finest and largest Scottish army to ever leave Scotland. If there was another occasion when Scotland had a larger, better equipped force then name and date and ill gladly research it.

  • Did I say anywhere that the whole army contained peopl who had been forced into the battle- so no I don't seriously believe that. Also do YOU seriously believe no English soldiers died from the battle, you insult their memory because not all of them would have wanted to go and kill someone who had not really done wrong. So forgive me if i'm just sticking up for Scotland and the comments that were'nt really needed.

  • Also, how is it that i insult the memory of the English soldiers who fought there by calling it a great day in English history. Thats truly a bizarre statement. Try for a moment to look at this from the English point of view.

For what they went through and what they achieved forgive me if i dont believe that they mourned the Scots who had just been beaten back whilst attempting an invasion.

  • Reepicheep77. We are not "funny". And I don't get what you mean. Sure we got invaded by the Vikings etc. What has that to do with anything. Did we lose? No. They raided a few areas is all. Unlike the Americans who have lost every bloody fight they have been in save WWII. And look what happened there. We helped you. Go sook yourself laddie. And we know we're not 100% Celtic. So stop making idiotic accusations. And p.s exiledlarky knows what he is talking about. pps. We can be patriotic if we want

  • Guid effort!

  • Thank you, piscores; that is one of my favorite bagpipe numbers.

  • Oh, and it's sad that you guys hate my truthful comments and are so ignorant that you mark them down a whole 6 points. I'm just not going to let overly patriotic Scots talk down to Americans like that anymore, and hopefully show them their ignorance. Sadly, other people get involved because they are the type who don't think for themselves, they just go with the flow.

Sorry piscores for causing this to happen on your video comments, but I want to let these guys know how ridiculous they are.

  • Nobody is saying Scots are a Race, none of the Celts belong to a particular Race. Scots are a seperate ethnic group whose culture is fundamently rooted in Celtic tradition manifested in our history, values, language, heritage and unique culture of which bagpipe playing, poetry, storytelling, clans, dress were/are central to our way of life. Our ancestors are made up of primarily Pictish, Celtic (Gaels/Brtons), and Norse and to lesser degree Angles, Flemish and Norman.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Wow.Too bad the internet is so full of people such as yourself. If you were able to direct your hatred(you must have done some research) into something useful,I bet you could get a job. Such a waste.

  • Just a question, is your argument that Scots aren't a nationality, or just not an race?

  • Scots is a nationality, of course I know that. But only the most ignorant would consider it a race.

I hope piscores doesn't mind I'm arguing this on his video; I really didn't want to make an argument, I wanted to make a point. I enjoy listening to Celtic music on Youtube, but it always annoys me whenever I see these Scots claiming their "Celtic blood" is supreme.

  • Fair enough, but most of Europe would be in the same situation, as many different tribes have passed through the continent at different times.

  • No offence but you can't learn everything about Scotland from an encyclopedia. Stop badmouthing people for something you believe to be true about how we feel, you don't know us, it's completely unjust.

  • I am defending myself for all the ignorant fools who have said things to the effect of "Us Celts are superior to you stupid Americans who dress up and try to be like us.", or "Stupid Englishmen! You filthy oppressors are good for nothing!", or when they insinuate that somehow being "Celtic" makes them better at playing Irish and Scottish music, or bagpipes. And of course almost every other word they use is inappropriate, so I wouldn't want to write exactly what they say.

  • Well while you defend yourself don't offend others. Plus you have forgot to mention the fact that we get a whole lot of rude and unjust comments from Americans and English which say that we're all wimps because our men wear 'skirts' so if that makes us slightly overpatriotic when we defend ourselves can we be blamed. Have you ever thought that maybe you're the ingnorant one in assuming that Scots make all the comments when you worse things back.

  • I argue even more fiercely against people who say Scots wear skirts; I am learning the bagpipe and will be marching in a band wearing a kilt in a year or so. However, only ignorant Americans are attacked, ignorant Scots are not, because most people who watch videos such as this have respect for Scottish culture. So I will do the job as an unbiased American of only a little Scottish descent who has respect for Scottish culture and music to give a fair view of things.

  • I can understand where you're coming from, don't think i'm trying to put all Americans into one group for only a couple are truly horrible to us.

  • Heh, I am not even slightly Scot, and this is one of the most beautiful songs of all time. It is one of the tunes that makes me want to learn bagpipes.

  • Scottish isnt a race? What a load of pish. Would you class Germans and Italians as a race? Well their countries are less than 200 years old. Scotland has been a unified existance since 843 A.D. making it one of the oldest countries in Europe. If that does not make us a race then I don't know what does.

  • same here

i used to go to scotland every year

my dads been going since he was a little boy, and we always go and watvh the pipes and drums.

We want to scatter my grannys ashes in the cottage they had up there...id love a piper to play this for her

  • Hey mate, I reckon you blew it well. I couldn't give a rats arse if you were starkers.. I'd not have watched too closelt, but still will have listened !!..

Obviously Dorbie and GoNavy311 will still fight over you.. You lucky fella you.. ;-)

Here in Brisbane they play in board shorts and singlets in summer...oh don't forget thongs!! (flip flops I think they're called elsewhere) Now there's a look! Kilt up for show time just the same.

    Play on mate.

  • you have to watch your dot and cuts. other wise you played it beautifully.

  • Brings a tear everytime I hear it. Got to be played on the pipes. Makes us all proud to be Scottish.

  • beautiful----from a sassenach !!

  • Will ALWAYS bring a tear to a "true" Scotsman. Grand video :0)

    L&L

  • Absolutly beautiful This was played at the repatriation of my best mate who died in.

    PTE Paul McManus RIP.

  • wht a fuking tune makes u so proud tae hear the pipes

  • King James 1V. died September 9th. 1513.

"The floors o' the forest are a' we'de awa...."

  • Flodden was fought in 1513 not 1553.

  • slow down, man - sounds better if its played very slowly...at least that's my humble opinion and the way I play it.

  • Thanks for your opinion.

  • @del0griffith A bit harsh. It can be played even faster (unadvisable, admittedly !) Cheers, though Piscores. A haunting tune, beloved of we Brits.

  • Good thing PipingMonkey caught that mistake. It's a grievous one! Both lovely songs but they shouldn't be mussed up, if you get my meaning. Nice job.

  • He should be kilted. The pipes, and this serious piece of ancient music are not for grungy teeshirts and baggy pants.

  • Well,I will prefer to dress the "phili-mhor" rather than the "philibeg" or the kilt.

    Thank you for your remarks.

    Sincerely yours

  • @piscores not mhor mate it's mor. fieleadh mor.great kilt. or fieleadh bhreacain the tartan kilt

  • Yeah ok, so when I have 10 minutes to practice, I'll spend 9 minutes putting on my kilt and other uniform items for that quick minute of practice! Since when is Flowers of the Forest an ancient piece? What a geek

  • It's almost 400 years old (probably older in fact), how old qualifies as ancient in your book? This is a revered tune reserved for funerals and similar rememberance ceremonies through its recent (250 year) association with the Battle of Flodden.

  • Nobody called it anything less than revered; I think it's a beautiful tune. I'm just responding to the ridiculous idea that one HAS to be in full kilt before playing the bagpipes. Whether I'm wearing plaid or pajamas (or even plaid pajamas) it makes no difference to the musical quality coming from the instrument.

  • You said it wasn't ancient which was the point I addressed, I'm not getting into your inane discussion about dress codes, that's a dodge. By tradition it should only be played outdoors on the GHB at funerals and rememberences, presumably you know that, I only mention it because you might want to wear a black armband on your pajamas if you attend a funeral in them.

  • Actually it's not my inane discussion, but don't let that stop you from feeling cool about your reply. Way to avoid the 'inane' discussion by giving me tips for 'dress codes' at funerals.

  • Dude you jumped on a guy calling him a geek when you had no clue about the true nature of this ancient and traditional song. It is ancient and by tradition played exclusively at funerals but keep blowing smoke.

  • To be clear (which would help your focus I think) the geeky part was what you call the 'inane dress code' claim, not the ancient nature of the tune. You're the only one making the tired argument that the tune is ancient (which is not in dispute? and has never been?). I'm done with your 'inane' discussion. I'm not eagerly awaiting a response.

  • Never been in dispute? That's a lie. You mocked the guy here's a quote that shows how ill-equipped you were to comment: "Since when is Flowers of the Forest an ancient piece? What a geek". So you did dispute it was ancient, and it's not an insignificant fact that this song is traditionally reserved exclusvely for funerals. It's not my fault you made an arse of yourself, now you're pretending it didn't happen. I'm done here, you've been told.

  • No, this is NOT The Flowers of Scotland it is the Flowers of the Forest and it is actually in three parts not two, the middle part is often missed out which is a shame as it sounds better when all played together.

  • Ok.Thanks
