  • that is my dream color for a guitar... just perfect. awesome job mate. ;)

  • Wow! Absolutely stunning, man! You've done a fantastic job on this!

  • Hey great videos and nice guitar. I was just curious do you put the black stain on first to bring up the quilted maple look? I was thinking of painting my guitar a canary yellow and didnt know whether to or not ?

  • @stingjet1

applying the black stain and then sanding it off will make the figured wood more vivid and "3d-like."

  • cheers for the quick response :) so do you reckon i should put the black under the canary yellow? it wont affect the brightness of the yellow will it?

  • @stingjet1

Just make sure you uniformly sand the maple first before dying black. As long as you sand much of the black off, the yellow should still be bright. Try finding videos or photos of this technique to get an idea how much black should remain.

  • great band singer lets m down big time

  • This thing is a beast man! Great job, I watched it all from start to finish. How's it holding up? Anyways, I have a question. I'm pretty much going to a similar project, but I want to do a PRS-style charcoal burst, how/what colors would I need to do that? Thanks

  • looks awesome!

what was the ratios of water to dye you used?

  • Great video man, this is exactly what i was looking for.

I'm trying to find those transfast dyes online, having some trouble at the moment. If you get a chance to reply with where you get them I'd very much appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  • @DavidHarvison

Sorry for the late response, I've been busy with college. You don't have to use the same dye as I did. If you're looking to do a burst finish like mine and using the same method, just make sure you find a water-based dye. I heard Transtint works well, but that is a universal tint that can be mixed with many types of liquids, so it could be expensive. If you need more help, just message me.

  • dude what would one have to do to do this for a living?

  • @stringwhore

plead the hell out of a professional luthier until he can't handle the persistence any longer.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR Thats my mate got his job in a music shop. He freaking loves it!

  • I'm planning on taking the wrap off of my drum kit, and then putting a maple veneer on it. Then I'm going to stain it that green color and fade it to natural. Then probably powdercoat the hardware on my kit to match the color. It's gonna be sooooooooooo sexy. :D it's also gonna cost a shit ton. D:

  • @calebandrewmichael

but it'll be worth it :D

    (if you're careful D:)

  • beautiful guitar. I wish I could do it.

  • you did a fucking great job there!

  • 2 things:

    - those colors work great together

    - why did you have a metal wire-sponge at 2:50?

  • Can the stain go right on the vaneer? or must it be filled or sealed in some way?

  • @Shredderistic6

For wood like mahogany, it shud be filled before staining. For wood like maple, it doesnt need to be filled. Just make sure the wood is sanded uniformly. If you seal the wood, then the only way to get a transparent finish is to spray a tinted lacquer.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR wow so it is a matter of wether or not the type of wood has closed or open pores. Thanks!

  • 6 people are color blind

  • Eye candy!! NOM NOM NOM NOM

  • I am actually about to stain my friends dean jet black with black strip going along the rounded edges of the body. People, when you stain, the first and maybe second coat is going to look like shit! Like getting a tattoo; it's not going to look good until you apply more, then it will be created into art! When you add your satin or gloss finish, it will look like gold unless you don't have a clue on what your doing lol. Nice guitar finish man.

  • Hey, how did you make it look like the dyes are merging together with the blue paint around the out side ?

  • @TeknicKingzZ

    descriptions

  • Hey , I'm wanting to apply a Great finish to my Drum Set , as I'm sanding it down due to scratches and dints. Do you reckon this Process would Work just the same for Drums ?

  • @MeinlTamaBlastBeat

Yes, if you expose the wood fully. You must know exactly what you're doing.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR Yeah I Do , I've Removed all hardware and Sanded them Down so it its just getting an amazing finish on it. I Might Go for a Quilted forest Green Burst :)

  • @MeinlTamaBlastBeat

That would look really cool, good luck

  • this is stupid to ask but can you send me a link to the site where you got the neck from i can't seem to find it sorry for sounding stupid

  • nice song and nice guitar

  • Good news, I'm going to college, and apparently there's a club for guitar crafting. That means it's time to build a legit guitar from scratch. F*cking epic.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR

Badass, what college are you going to? (If you don't mind me asking)

  • @LizardKing0223

    Oregon State University

  • @DUY1337GUITAR where are you going, I need to apply

  • @secretagentYTer

I'm in Oregon State University and I am building an 8-string guitar in class right now

  • @DUY1337GUITAR that is just so cool

  • dude... that's the guitar I've always wanted (except for the dragon on the fretboard.)

  • ZOMG BUBBLE!

  • GET OUTTA HERE JERIN!!

  • what type of wood is the body?

  • @ShiverC0ld

Maple veneer on top of Honduran mahogany

  • @DUY1337GUITAR thanks:))'

  • Does anyone know wether Acrylic dyes can be spray painted with clear nitrocellulose lacquer or will it react?

  • @blackstars26 Yes you can spray nitro over acrylic but NEVER the other way round. :)

  • you could call the finish "Seaburst" lol

  • OMG UBER UBER WAY IM DEF goING to use this way on my acoustic uber cooooooooooooooooool

  • wow, nice

  • is a veneer a must have?

  • is a veener a must have?

  • Did you stain the whole thing or just the front?

  • does reranch stain come with the ratio of water to dye needed???

  • Comment removed

  • WOW--Thanks for sharing! I'm about to put one of Brian Calvert's veneers on an RG-570, and was going to do my own Dragon burst going from blue in the center to a deep purple around the edges. I found the link to your videos by a bro on Jemsite--I'll be following this one!

  • @bengalsfanatic9

Blue to purple burst sounds like a cool idea, remember to share with me too :)

  • how did you do the burst effect?is there any link to a tut?please please reply!

  • @PowerOnWheels

how hard is it to read the descriptions before asking? not to mention I basically just showed how it was done in the video.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR lol sorry man,now i really sound like an idiot.i left out checking the description.thanks for reply anyway.

  • @DUY1337GUITAR Instead of using black for a purple/blue drag. burst, could i use scarlet?

  • @51Arvyn

You can actually use the blue or purple to stain and then sand off to get the same results i did. Then you can stain over it again, and the low spots will be darker and give a 3D look.

  • dude plzz explain to me - whats a veneer ?? first time saw it and i dont know what it is - plzz explain someone to me

  • BUBBLE..:)))funny:)

  • guess I'm not the outlaw that i waaaaaaaaaas!!! yeah! listen to the solo!!!! fucking smoking dude!!!

  • What's the black that you used and what ratio did you mix it at?

  • nvm lol, i watched your vid link. awesome work man. i give u props for that

  • hello, i am also trying to stain my guitar, but what was that grey stain you put on before the blue/green stain. do you need it? please get back to me!!!!

  • @jradical8

The grey you're talking about is actually black. Oddly, it almost looks like dark purple. The black is to give more contrast to the veneer when I stain it with color. Not everyone does the same, but it's popular when it comes to using dye stains on figured wood. If you choose to do a dark color, like blue for example, you can just stain the blue, sand it off, then stain another layer of blue and you will have the same contrast effect.

  • Thanks so much for the link on the color dyes.

  • ur my new hero......thanx wow........

  • I am building a guitar, and I decided to make a maple fretboard, but I need to know what kind of finish to put on the fretboard. Any tips? The body is also maple and mohagany, I wish to leave it natural, but with a glossy clear coat, what kind of finish should I use? If anyone has an Idea, please leave me a message! Thanks.

  • hey i have some questions here, ive never done anything like this but im gonna give it a shot. so first i was wondering if i was going to get a quilted top and i stained the top like blue or yellow or something would it still show the quilted part or is there something special to put on first... also i was thinking about a walnut body for the first one i wouldnt need to fill the grain on that would i i could just stain it?

  • I already like the finish in 2:06.

  • Nice vid, how did you get the flamed maple top originally?

  • omg...BUBBLE!!!

  • wow dude youre a genius...

  • do u think that that finish would look good on a les paul?

  • how do you get the design of the wood to look like that? ive been tying to do this but im not sure if its a natural thing or a way o sand it. plleeaase respond back i need help.

  • @vegetariankookiexd You mean the flame figure? That's a natural growth curiosity, and you're gonna have to buy a piece of wood or veneer that has it already.

  • Looks awesome bro. Im going to do that with the wood work on my AK-47. I will go with a deep green over the black, I think it will look sharp when its done.

  • screw u

  • @jmsken7

    ?

  • Stunning colour! <3

  • @Kramer13045

no, this is wood stain. To make a transparent color over sanding sealer, you would want to use tinted lacquer. They can come in aerosols or you can make your own mix if you have an air brush kit.

  • Nice! Very Nice! Just starting a solid body myself here and was trying to come up with something original. Thanks for posting these videos as they will help me in my build. Again, nice guitar!!!

  • So you went with the color dye method huh. Great job on it.

I have an epiphone dot that I plan to use color spray on, hope it goes well.

  • How did you deal w/ the bubble? Great job BTW!

  • @jfr04

it only rises when its wet. when dry, its pretty much gone, so the lacquer sealed it down.

  • What did you do to get the blue dye to blend into the green body? Did you just wipe away the excess blue dye with a cloth to blend it?

    Thanks

  • @yoyoguy161

    look at link in descriptions

  • I'm gonna do a strat style and tele style for my prototypes for san diego custom guitars in a turquoise color. cool video I know alot of guys use black grain filler to bring out the flames. I never saw anyone use black stain first,.. nice job!

  • Great set of vids!!!

I'm currently attempting to restore a MIM Fender 50s Strat back to it's original condition (glossy black), before Gilmourising it. Your vids have been a great help :-)

    Kev

  • Im going to try and re-paint my les paul a lemonburst finish, should i still use the black stain to bring out the tiger stripes or try a brown stain so thier not too dark?

  • @Kramer13045

using brown does not always mean it will be lighter than black, it also depends on the density of the dye you mix. It's always best to do samples on scrap would (preferably the same type of wood/grain that your guitar has)

  • I'm thinking of that transparent blue finish on that Epiphone Les Paul Plus-Top but brighter and with a bit of green in it. Any ideas?

  • I'm also going for that Tropical Sea Water finish. Any ideas?

  • @caulinrocker

i would not recommend that. watercolor is not the same as dye, which is a concentrate and designed to penetrate for vivid color.

  • This is really helpful! Thanks very much! I'm using food colouring on mine :D

  • Beautiful job mate. My favorite colors on one of my favorite woods.

  • @caulinrocker

what do you mean? this video isnt about lacquering

  • I've been watching to the first part and i'm gonna watch to the end ! You have done here an awesome job !

  • is the wholebody flame maple or is the back mahogany or somthing

  • @fishfood45

    read descriptions before asking

  • nvm i saw the rest of your vids how much did it all come out to? and was this your first guitar project?

  • Did you make the body as well? or did you order the unfinished body from somewhere? I kinda want to start my own guitar project as well on a strat-type guitar.

  • hi please tell me what color you used in the beginning? I really like that greyish color!

    Thanks in advance!

  • that is a very nice colour1 your making me want to make my own guitar!

  • how thick is the venner you used

  • 1/40 or 1/42 inch

  • can plain black water based stain be used to blacken a guitar rly thick to wher after u can spray lacquer coating to shine it? making it look like a pro paint job cleanly?

  • no thats not possible

  • @DUY1337GUITAR Wait can you still spray lacquer on top of the stain?

  • @SuicidalxFail

well you're suppose to, the stain is always under the varnish

  • steel wool. did you use a magnet to pickup any tiny flakes. good videos. i have some flamed maple veneer myself. been thinking about putting it on my washburn dime. its 2 small though. scared of a totally visable join line. n its pretty veneer. dont wana destroy it.

  • thanks that helped a lot. how do you think this finish would look on a double neck flying v

  • insane, lol

  • have you done this a lot because i havn't tryed it before and i dont want to ruin it.

  • This in the video is my first attempt, it turned out successful for me

  • ya im not sure if i should do a finish like this or if should have my cousin (an artist) maybe do some kind of sick design for it. I have a double neck flying v guitar. what do you think

  • I personally like natural finishes with stains more. But if you trust your cousin to create something you want, then I'd say go with that because it can be unique.

  • I am also making my own guitar. Do you know if the colour of stain you have used would work on Elm wood? I wont be using a veneer.

  • it will work, just make sure you test it on scrap. Sanding the wood to different levels of grit will give you different shades of the dye. My veneer was sanded to 400 grit before staining.

  • how lightly did you sand so that the tiger stripes would appear?

  • not that lightly, but it came quickly

  • that is suck a nice guitar what make is it please comment back. cheers

  • /fav

gonna need all the help i can to get my future project going!

  • you won't regret it :)

  • dang ncie this makes me want to sand down my guitar and do this!

  • awsome

  • it's even more awesome now that the neck is attached to it.

  • dude, this song is amazing, but it has sooo much more potential. at the end when he says "Was!!!" he could have done a falsetto scream and said "WAaAaAaAaAaAaAaAaAaAaASS!!!!" But thats just my opinion.

  • shenanigans

  • That is the coolest guitar color ever

  • Sumptuous staining....:-)

  • Btw, do you have any available recordings that you can have me use on videos?

  • Yeah. PM me and I will send some suitable MP3s if you let me have an email address

  • when you sand it, what grade sand paper are you using?

  • 400 grit

  • that blue is so cool!!!!!

  • thats so smexyyy nice job man
