Really a shame that SDG didn't tour the US w/ Stevie. They would have been huge. I remember this song, but didn't connect it with a face until I saw this clip.
It's great to hear (and see, of course!) this as it was written, instead of all "juiced up" with speed and the extra voices. Only a little over 100000 hits on this, the more sychronized version?! Thanks "udeari," whoever, & wherever you are!
OK - Steve Winwood was 17 yrs old in 1965 - how does a british teenager have so much soul? Ray Charles is a major influence, but this guy had his own ID at a early age. Great stuff!
@rotgrafix I don't think it's a C3 either. The organ appears to have preset tabs. Also, the cabinet does not look like a C3. I'm still trying to figure it out.
Son of a gun...that looks like Eric Clapton on the Gibson guitar. I know he wasn't actually part of the 'Spencer Davis Group'...but Steve Winwoon and him did form the short lived group 'Blind Faith' together. Yep...I think that is Clapton.
No its spencer Davis...but he does resemble clapton a bit...and its a Gibson reproduction..and you cant hear a note he plays...its just stevies voice and that Jimmy Smith type of hammond playing and the drums and bass...If you look at the frist verse,,,he doesnt even touch the guitar with his right hand...LOL...
How can one obtain a copy of this Finnish TV broadcast? I'd love to own it, so I could blast it on my home stereo. This is such a gem to have, hearing these guys so raw and pure.
I can't hear Spencer Davis's guitar at all. I'm not sure I can hear the guitar on the original recording either. Is he just doubling Muff's bass riff?
Yes it's finnish, and you're obviously german, and I'm norwegian. Weird that I understand you then. Well, atleast this is a great song, and a great recording!
The whole clip is humorous, but valuably so. How much of this kind of footage would survive today? Finnish subtitles over the vocals! And a bunch of Finnish-speaking kids surrounding Steve for his autograph - whoever left the camera running on that deserves a medal.
Yes indeed. I just heard that, when this was taped, they did like 3 hours soundcheck, and run almost out of studiotime. I´m thinking that it was worth it. Great sound for a tv live show. In Finland. At that time.
he was 17 singing this

I don't know where a white teen got a voice like this. But it's just ridiculously awesome.

What's that sticking out of the back of Stevie's head?! About 42 seconds into the video. His evil twin trying to make an escape?
harvey1954 1 year ago
These guys never got the credit they deserved. Steve Winwood's voice is a phenom.

OK, After yet more research.... I'm almost sure the keyboard Winwood is playing in this video is a Hammond M-102.
every2dogs 1 year ago
After more research... my best guess is the organ is a L-100 series Hammond.

This is without a doubt the best version they ever did of this song. Thanks for uploading and giving me memories of when I was a teenager.

I think Leslie West has stated it is a Hammond C3

Anyone know what kind of keyboard Steve Winwood is using. It's not a Hammond B3.

His live vocals are so raw and primal. Such a powerhouse genius at this age. Knocks me out every time.

..and he is playing the same Harmony bass guitar as I used to play in 1968... nice to see..

A better band name would have been 'Stevie Winwood Group, but wenn Stevie met Spencer he only was 15 or 16 y/o.

Underrated blues belter from 1966. Winwood very like Ray Charles in his delivery.
The Winwood version of the Spencer Davis Group bowed with this song and I`m A Man. Magnificent exit!!!
