And the novel takes place in the 1800s... The musical's movie gives an exact date, but it's not exactly canon.

But this game gives 1881 as the date for Don Juan Trimphant anyway, so there is no excuse for your being WRONG.

@joethulhuz actually, it was a penny Dreadful. The cheapo novel of it's time. I mean, I'm not trying to be rude, but it's true. By the time Leroux was finishing Phantom he was probably thinking about his next book. I mean Everyone says that Leroux would be "Rolling in his grave" at some of these adaptations, but the only thing he'd be rolling about was that he's not makeing any money off his book like everyone else is. Sorry, people, but it's probably true

@TPOTCD What you're saying is true, but it's still not a Penny Dreadful. The novel was a serial, yes, but Charle Dickens wrote serials, and they aren't Penny Dreadfuls. What makes it not a Penny Dreadful is that it didn't emphasize the horror aspect of the Phantom's story. It instead emphasize the mystery - who is the mysterious ghost, and why is he infatuated with Christine? - and the romantic elements - Raoul/Christine, Raoul saving her from the beast - therefore making it merely a serial.
