I'm kind of scared now reading these posts.... I take depakote and I do agree that it makes you gain weight. I went from 150 lbs to 185...I think I was up to around 195lbs at one time. I have to say I do drink alcohol on the weekends. (Large quanity). I would talk to my doctor about changing medications. But, I dont wan't to risk a nervous breakdown. I guess if it kills my liver. It will. I can't see myself in my early 20's shunning alcohol. Maybe, I need to.

This is one drug to stay away from for Bipolar disorder. I drank alcohol frequently on this med way back, and my liver profile became compromised. It rebounded after discontinuing Depakote, but my triglycerides have never worked out right even with exercise and weight loss.

Keep in mind your doctor uses a scale to determine the dose. The more you weigh the more Depakote you WILL take. Stay away from this stuff.

Depakote was the worst medication I've ever taken. It is a great big oval horsepill with a disgusting taste that makes pepto bismol taste like candy. The pill made me overweight, bloated, shortness of breath, and I was as white as a sheet, my face was puffy and lips were big. The pill also made me both ravenously hungry and very sleepy and I was nearly involved in a car accident cause of it. I also know others that are on this medication with similar symptoms and are always falling asleep on it.

I found out for myself with a little research that Depakote is actually an anti-psychotic and that the amount she'd prescribed to me was 3x the average necessary daily dosage. Yes, there are doctors who prescribe drugs before making a proper diagnosis, but I would like to think those are few and far between. Doctors like my father and my neurologist are people looking out for my well being, as yours are for you.

They talk to me for a few minutes and give a prescription, it is not even a diagnosis, they do not even try to know more about me and try to make an educated diagnosis, they just make a best guess on what they hear from me. How would I really know what to say, because I am not a specialist.

I was taking Depakote for my BPD but I really didn't feel any difference while taking it. I was taking 250mg twice daily... then they wanted me to take an extra because it wasn't working. Don't take it if you don't think you need it. Dr.s are quick to write out scripts for stuff that people don't even need. .... If it makes you feel better, take it. Make sure you get your blood tested regularly.

Anti depressants(Prozac, Celexa ,Effexor), mood stabilizers(Lithium, Depakote) and Anti-psychotics( Geodon, Haldol) effect your majorly. If you just have anxiety just take benzodiazepines for short period of time. Those highly marketed drugs are just as bad as controlled substances. I actually got withdrawals from Depakote and Geodon.

Maybe your doctor prescribed a larger dose than you should be taking, ask your doctor to move you down to a lower dose, I personally take 250 MG.

I wonder if why they push drugs like this. Depakote is expensive med. My doc is always pushing that on me. I gained weight, makes me feel like shit, i hate it.

Don't take it. I gained 50 lbs in 6 months. Doctors have lobbyist kind of like the governments lobbyist. They get kickbacks for pushing medications . You most likely don't even need it. The Doctor gets paid to sell it.

I was put on depakote 500 three times a day for mild bipolar.I break out like a teenager I've gained 10lbs on two months I have the shakes really bad my memory is getting worse every day but the most disturbing thing is my dreams.I keep dreaming I'm in a storm or running away from a tornado.Every night its the same thing.And there so real they stay with you for a while.Last night I dreamt I was running from a storm and I drove threw a power station,got struck by lightning and it wouldnt let go.

i took 1000 mg of depakote er twice a day and it just had devastating side effects however im glad it worked for you. what really saved my life was lamital its such a powerful drug with little side effects.

this drug is a life saver. the trick is to keep the dose as low as possible. I take 500 mg ER with no side effects, not even weight gain.

1000mg made be break out into acne, lower doses cause no problems. good drug.

i was so tired all the time while on depakote neverhad energy to do nothing or go anywhere all i did was sleep and have seizures when i stop taking it i lost maybe 30 pounds in 2 months and not so tired but lost some of my memory but i take 1000 mg keppra twice a day and 500mg keppra twice a day and 100mg of lamital twice a day i havent had a seizure in almost two years thanks to a wonderful doctor in newyork and i stay in chicago

Im 35 now and if the world was to end and there was no more local drug store and health insurance , without my depakote Im flopping around on the floor. I hate being dependent on this drug. did the siezures get worse with age? My son had a few fevral siesures between the ages of 1 and 2, he had one questionable episode, that was not witnessed by me, but by my family. We had an eeg done, now the doctors have diagnoses him with epilepse, and prescribed this medication. I don't think he needs it, he is a strong healthy young boy by appearance, he doesn't have seisurez. I'm scheduling a second opinion. do you have any advise?

Well, I'm 39 and under Depakote too (with an other drug). No, not always seizures get worse with age. My experience is that my seizures are the same or maybe a little less than when I was younger, and taking less drugs

I had a severe brain infection some time ago. After the illness, i was having some problems, i dont want to detail. However, I didnt want to be put on medication, so i tried alternative therapies. They were a disaaster. Finally i gave up trying to treat myself with the herbal type stuff, and went on depakote. It has been a miracle in my eyes. So many people complain about it on the internet. Bur for me, it has been great.

Hmmm, I take two 250mg twice a day for absence seizures. I never noticed any side-effects, I may have been fatigued but then again I'm always tired so it's hard to tell.
