O Scale - Realistic looking model trains in 1/48 scale proportions. Made of die-cast metal & plastic since the Postwar Era. Most trains from the Postwar Era aren't considered scale models because they're too small to be accurate. The berkshire from my Lionel Polar Express set aren't scale.
O Gauge tinplate - Non-Scale trains that are cartoon-like toys & they're made of tinplate. Tinplate trains were around the Prewar Era that spans from the early 1900's to when America enters World War II.
