best line in the entire movie - 4:27 "Popeye - toot! toot!", then the fantastic orchestral suite of all the songs including the famous "sailors hornpipe"..... classic
ill never forget i had to be abt 7 or 8 and my aunt rented this and bruce lee's fist of fury for me at blockbuster. that was a great afternoon. i discovered two great movies.
I like the look and feel of this film, I only saw a part of it when I was younger but that part - 2:43 as they say 'more cheese than a sandwich shop' haha =P
robin williams does fit the role of popeye perfectly and the voice too. but could you see popeye being portrayed in this movie by Dave from full house?
@Eagleboyhoove he only did that once in this movie, during the boxing match with Oxblood Oxheart - he gets knocked into the ropes and tweets the pipe with a look anger
I miss this movie, I saw it when I was a kid, this movie is older than I am, but I always loved Popeye. I won't eat spinach of any kind other than canned and I won't eat it any other way than right out of the can, that's the only kind of spinach I like. I work at Walmart and went as Popeye one Halloween, cans of Spinach, pipe and all. I developed my tastes for that one kind of spinach and one way of eating it because of Popeye.
@WystenDraco i was at dollar tree today and they had a popeye brand of canned spinach-what a trip! ever seen it or tried it? i was curuios but not enogh to buy a can! lol
oh yeah, and it's like any other spinach. But when I was a kid, I hated spinach, and Popeye Spinach in a can was the only spinach my parents could get me to eat. I would not eat it cooked, or what not, I would only eat it right out of the can, just like Popeye.
yea, even now still "I hates it!" I watch alot of Popeye still, Popeye inspired me to face my hate head on and still does to this day. Today my spinach is not limited to Popeye brand, but it's still limited to me eating it out of the the can.
This was one of the best cartoon-to-live action movie made, yes it was silly and yes it was campy, but it was a cartoon from the 50s and 60s, and it tried to stay true to form, and it was funny as hell, I know were are not talking like John Houston or Coppala, but it was what it was (no pun) a fun silly family movie from the early 80s, pure entertainment.
Gotta still love Popeye after all these years and Robin Williams' portrayal of the one eyed sailor was perfect. I always had to eat my spinach as a young boy whenever Popeye was on.
One punch? I thought Popeye was gonna put a mad beating on Bluto but one victory punch? Come to think of it in the cartoons Popeye normally socked him once in the kisser. Great film tho!!
Most of u people were not even here yet, I was 10 yrs old then and we all loved this movie.....Robin just starting out and 30 yrs later still going strong! Gotta love Robin!
Robin Williams really is the only one to really nail this role, because Williams is cartoon like himself without playing a character! Indeed, Williams perfectly portrayed Segar's version of the anvil-armed sailor man to a tee.
Wow I remember loving this movie as a kid. Now looking back at it with modern sensibilites; am I wrong for finding the octocpuss wrestling Olvie Oyle erotic?
lupinvash3, agree completely. it's on my 10 favorites list (along with films like "A Boy and His Dog"). Fgrandinetti is right about the audience not being familiar with the old strip, but I disagree with him about the songs, at least a bit.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This film did not do well because it was based on Segar's "Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye' strip of the 1930's--which audiences didn't know in 1980. A live-action film based on the Fleischer animated cartoons may have done better. Plus, most of the songs are awful and Popeye NEVER hated spinach.
I think the song at the end was the best song out of the whole movie. This is by far one of Robin's best performances ever. Siskel and Ebert were right about giving two thumbs up. I feel that this movie has been underrated and unappreciated. Damn critics.
Popeye has a pair of SLEDGE HAMMER arms and fists when he eats his spinach. When he eats his spinach he HATES bullies and he gets pissed off !! I like that in him !!
A lot of people like this movie for many good reasons. It's charming and fun to watch. It was also surprisingly accurate to the comic. It was unfortunately the musical version and not the straight comic version. It was released at the same time whereabouts of some giant megablockbuster which also helped to kill its audience turnout.
This film has to be one of my very favorites. I remember seeing it as a child and being ENTIRELY entertained. Man...now I want to watch the whole thing again...
He has said it was his least favorite movie. There are many people though who love it alot. I like to think that if you made a movie based on a cartoon, you make it look like one, sound like on and get actors who look like their characters, but never draw attention to the fact that it is supposed to be a cartoon. This movie did that very well.
This movie bombed when it came out because people are morons and didn't realize it was being 100% faithful to the old Max Fleischer cartoons. Siskel and Ebert realized this and rightfully praised the film but were almost alone in doing so.
Fortunately, tons of kids saw it on television years later removed of any bias from idiotic critics who panned the movie for monumentally retarded reasons and loved it. I was one of those kids.
