Parts 1 and 2 are really helpful, just enough information to be complete. One of the things i like is that you keep talking through the steps. Often in YT vids the instructor veers off the topic or stops talking during critical steps and you cant even clearly see what he is doing. Very small point, I was waiting to see if you wouldnt comment on the placement of the mag clamp and sure enough you did. Lighting, presentation, clarity of speech, whole thing is excellent.
@cvcoco I see quite a few comment but this really means a lot to me man! Thanks so much for the encouragement. It's an older video with an older camera but I'm glad it was helpful.
Just cleaned my grandfathers 870, and when i took the trigger assembly out, it looked like an elephant had taked a shit in there!!, so i put it in diesel oil among other parts of the gun, seems to work brilliantly!!
If your fielding the gun and putting it on the ground and what not. Its best to clean it every 2nd time. Depending on conditions. oil and grease like to hold on to dirt and dirt is an abrasive which can cause moving parts to wear and become loose.
Nice video, one of these days Ill clean my 870 but 15 rounds just isnt enough hahaha
This was sooo helpful!! Everything was spot on and couldn't be more accurate! Bought my first shotgun just yesterday and I cleaned it (heard you need to clean new firearms) while following along to this! I just didn't take the trigger mechanism out since I didn't have anything to punch it out with. Going to next time though now that I know how it all comes apart/together! Thanks a million!!
What about inbetween? Do u clean your shotgun every time you shoot it? If u put 100 shells through it do u just Sean the barrel out and do a light cleaning?
Awesome video. I got my 870 used and want to give it a good cleaning before hunting next Saturday. This may have been asked below, but What are the specific products you're using, and which is best for what parts? Thanks for posting!
@kyleag02 Thanks! I was using M-Pro7 and Remoil mostly, but the products used aren't critical. Any gun solvent will work. Solvents for the most things, oil for the trigger mechanism and slide. Thanks for watching.
I wish you would take time at 5:42 and show this part SLOWLY as that is the key to getting this gun to operate properly again,,,, Mine is going to the gunsmith because of this part...
@mayito714 Your request is the first I've had in 13K views, so I probably won't be making another video in order to show this....Sorry man. Between my videos and other 870 videos you've probably got a reasonable amount of relevant information available to you. If you're still at a loss, tip you're gunsmith with pizza or his favorite beer and just kindly ask him to run through it with you once. They usually enjoy sharing their knowledge. Good luck! :)
good stuff man! i have a h&r pardner 12 gauge. almost exactly the same as the 870 remington and this video was a great go-to for me. thanks for your time and effort in this video.
Great Video, I've had my rem. 870 for a couple years, and all I ever did was oil the barrel. After looking at how dirty your gun was under the bolt I decided to clean it.
Great Videos. I have been cleaning my 870 for years and picked up some new tips here. I have also always been afraid to pull the trigger assembly apart but this shows how easy it is. Thanks for posting.
Great set of videos! I went out and put about 50 rounds through my new 870 this weekend and wanted a quality video to supplement the crappy user manual that comes with the Shotgun. Thanks for a great how-to!
@slowride55 A day of shooting could be 25 rounds or 500 rounds, so it really depends. Shotguns barrels foul very quickly so I'd suggest running a couple of patches through first unless you don't mind washing your boresnake every time you use it. I say, get the worst out with a patch first and finish with the snake, as demonstrated here. Thanks for watching!
Hello, thank you for such a thorough and thoughtful video! This is exactly what I had been looking for. I specifically like that you included product names, etc. How often (approximate shot count?) do you do a cleaning like this? If I went out and shot 50 shells, is there an abbreviated version, or would you do this full-scale cleaning?
@monduconstruct Very welcome! I do this every 500-1000 rounds. For 50 rounds nothing is needed if you live in a dry climate...unless you just want to clean your gun out of preference. In wet or humid regions just clean the barrel and get the rest on the "big" cleaning.
Great video. I just bought a used 870. It needed a cleaning, but having never owned or cleaned a shotgun before, I was in need of some instruction. Your vid was easy to follow. Now I've got an awesome sg. Thanks.
Great video. I just bought a used 870. It needed a cleaning, but having never owned or cleaned a shotgun before, I was in need of some instruction. You're vid was easy to follow. Now I've got an awesome sg. Thanks.
Thanks so much for putting this together. Really helpful and useful video. I am a new shotgun owner and the manual is not useful at all. So a big THANKS again.
@davekrech > Thank YOU Patriot. I have the 870 Marine Magnum. Was having difficulty pulling the slide assembly out. Not sure why. The shell stop spring is very stiff. Anyway, job done & clean as a whistle, thanks to you. Am still having problems with chambering. Occassional shells are jamming in the receiver. Not good when you need a reliable weapon offshore (pirates & sharks :-). Bass Pro asked me to return. They will send to Remington for repair. My backup ... a Glock 22
My Son gave me some aresol Break Free for guns. I want to know if I take it apart like you did can I use Break Free on Everything as a Lubricant after Ive cleaned it. Instead of using Rem oil . Will the BF work ok inside everything & in the trigger assemble ok? Im not sure where to get or WHAT type of grease that is you used on the sear??? Thanks for the video,Herb
I have a NEF Pardner 12 GA Pump (its a Clone of the REM 870)......works great!
@HerbWalker BF will work fine for everything if you like. With the exception of Arctic type whether, I really don't get too wrapped up in which lube works best. All the modern brands seems to work well in my experience.
I purchased a Knoxx Tactical 870 at SGC. Awesome gun. Thanks for this useful video. I was wondering what you would suggest (if anything) for cleaning and maintenance between full cleanings. Also, I noticed sometimes you use both Break-Free and Remoil to lube certain parts. Just wondering why that is. Thanks again.
@markwrobinson Thanks! Same cleaners no matter full or quick clean. What you use isn't critical. Try a couple and see what you like best. I use breakfree for heavier oil and remoil for light oil. Again, not critical.
The grease you put on the hammer... can you use normal rem oil on that? or does that grease do something special? also, do you need some higher quality lube than rem oil (like break free) or will rem oil work?
@drizzt94720 Very welcome! Yeah, I juice those shotguns up good when I clean them...haha. AR-15's as well that are non-piston guns. Grease is a heavier lube and stays in place longer and that's why I use it there. Breakfree is heavier than Remoil so if I coated the entire trigger group in that stuff it would be a bit of overkill, not to mention it would be dripping out for hours afterwards. The Remoil is lighter and perfect for just getting a light protection on all the small parts.
Just learned about the 870 today and I had to do some research and your video really made it worth the purchase that I intend on making. I've seen reviews on the 870 here but none addressed the most important on the maintenance after using the shotgun. Thanks for the video. I'm sure it will help me when I need to clean my gun.
You're very welcome wchabotte! I'm happy that it was of some use to you and you'll never regret the purchase of the 870. It's a solidly fine work horse that will provide at least a lifetime of enjoyment.
