Part 2: But the way I've always learned it, the low tone starts and ends low, and the high tone starts and ends high. In my mind (and ears), you seem to do the low tone like a falling tone, and do the falling tone like a more exaggerated low tone, and the high tone like a rising tone, and the rising tone like a more exaggerated high tone. Is there a reason you teach it differently?
By the way, I looove your accent, and you look suay maak maak maak. :-)
The arrows are helpful -- approximations -- to be used by those beginning to learn the tones. After this initial assist, the student then listens to native speakers.
Your arrows and explanation of the falling (3rd tone) and high tones is rather misleading.
The third, ie, falling tone, does not rise and fall to the same degree as indicated by your arrows. It only rises a little bit before significantly falling.
Then you say "the fourth tone is a higher tone". Actually, the falling tone starts at a higher pitch than the high tone. And the high tone rises slowly and falls quickly - to the same pitch that it started at, but your arrows don't show that.
@OzDelphi. With what I have already learnt, I found the arrows to be helpful. People interpret and explain things in their own way...it's not an exact science. Because she is a natural thai speaker, I think the audio aspect of her lesson far outweighed any slightly mis-aligned arrows!
@oiram57 - you obviously haven't learnt much. Because if you had, you would have realised that studythai's demonstration of the high tone (at roughly 1:09) was heavily influenced by her "slightly mis-aligned arrows" to the extent that her pronunciation of the high tone was wrong. I can guarantee that when she speaks Thai, her high tone is nothing like it was in this demonstration. BTW, my wife is Thai, and she, like the majority of Thais' I meet, cannot explain the tones accurately.
@OzDelphi i agree with you until you say the high tone rises slowly and falls quickly.....it does fall, it stays where at the top, there is just a breathe taking place there that makes it sound like the sound falls
Subscribing :) This was very helpfull, even though my mom is thai i've found the thai tones very hard to learn :P Maybe it's because she never explained it with arrows. lol :)
