@hulkmeister23 You're missing the point, he's the leader of the Nazgul and amazingly powerful, even Gandalf couldn't kill him. He had magic/a prophecy protecting him but the wording of it was his downfall. It's not the sword in the face that does it, it's the fact that she is no man. He's already been weakened by Merry and is so stunned by her revelation(and a little afraid that he might actually be defeated) that he has no time to react. The book makes it clearer. Read it. It's very good

@yilesse That raises another point, if he was so powerful then how could a mere half ling inflict so much damage by knifing him in the back, you'd think he shrug it off like when Frank Castle stabbed the Russian in the chest, yet had no effect. And Eowyn's success largely based on the wording of the spell just sounds like a giant loop-hole if you ask me. By that logic, a kid could kill him and it wouldn't have to be on the battlefield either; not a very good protection spell if you ask me.

@hulkmeister23 It IS a giant loophole that the witch-king was too arrogant to think of. Merry managed to sneak up on him and got in a lucky hit on his leg. I explained the rest of it in the previous post. As for a child killing him, he'd just squash them with his giant mace of doom, he's usually the ultimate badass. Eowyn wins down to a combination of luck, circumstance and arrogance on his part. The reason it might seem old hat is the anount of times it's been copied elsewhere. ;)

You're being too literal, this is a poetic work after all:

Glorfindel's prophesy simply stated in, suitably vague terms, how and when the Witch King would die. A prophecy of the conditions that would be met when the WK's time had come. It wasn't a "spell"...part of the irony being that perhaps others took it as such... perhaps even the WK.

Also, the sword used to injure WK was not ordinary.

@hulkmeister23 Basicly, no matter how powerful you are, you are by no means invincible. Even Sauron got his fingers cutoff by Isildur soo I think Witch-King can be harmed.

He was arrogant that he won't be beaten and kinda took his time until Merry sneak behind and stab him. But he is not a mere creature to just rolldown as you see Merry's hand literally got burned. As for the prophecy, he knew that his arrongance will be his downfall after seeing Eowyn take of her disguise.

From what I've heard and read, the Witch King didn't even ride on a winged beast but on a horse and Gandalf's staff was not broken by the Witch King nor was he forced down from Shadowfax's back by magic, among other things. Other than that... well, I guess that leaves it to speculations ^^.
