  • Luckily it was a relatively harmless con. Next time, you should flesh out the story before you do anything for someone, or just plain not help them.

  • Another scary thought is that now they know where you live. I'm always torn about helping people for this reason. If I don't help, will they come back later to try and get some kind of revenge?

  • People who are doing the scamming should never question a good samaritans' "moral compass." You're a good person--- and while this may sound like a broken record, just be careful.

  • They had a nerve, huh? I don't think they were on the level. In cases like that they could ring the cops and/or get some other kind of help... not go knocking on random's doors at midnight. The nerve of them!!

  • There's a balance between skepticism and empathy that's hard to find. A good start is to be careful of ever believing you've found the comfortable and correct place to be.

  • It is best to trust, but be careful....

  • I can kind of relate to the feeling of not believing someone asking for help, and even fear them, but do it anyway. I was at a gas station at 3am, alone, and some guy comes up with a story asking if I'll buy him $5 in gas, i say ok. stupid. It gets to $5, but he didn't stop since it was on my card. I shut the pump off and he get agitated saying they really need more then $5, and his buddies do too (yikes). Another time a homeless I gave change to tried to pickpocket my wallet.

  • @j0lin101 Well it was a very nice thing you did none the less. Sad people take advantage of people like us.

  • Wow, Man you are way too nice, please be careful, please.

  • It's tough. There is a line you have to walk between compassion and caution - no matter how much we want to believe.

Let's go back to you getting beaten up and trying to get a little help. The reason those people were complete assholes, IMO, is not that they didn't unlock their doors and come running out to help you. It's that they didn't take reasonable action. They could have said, "OK, sit down right there, I'm calling the police and a couple of neighbors. You'll be alright".

  • @AncientAtheist Thank you for the comment and words of wisdom my friend.

  • they will come back with another story looking for a hand out. and a ride. I let a couple band mates crash at my house for" a couple days" turned into weeks. had to kick them out. tow his car. losers finish last. unless they get a reality tv show.
