Interesting symbolism on this video clip. IMHO, Ofra is a saint. Most of her songs ooze saintliness and love of God, like Im Nin Alu. For those who missed it (and perhaps for Middle East history savvy people), the person who pursues Ofra on this vid uses the printed symbol of the fly, that is to say, the symbol of Baal, lord of flies. In 1:55, Ofra stands above a fountain with a dead insect inside. The symbolism is clear: Ofra rejoices on the death of the insect-god, Baal.
Absolutely in the same way...the voice of Ofra was so intense and incomparable...i have the same feeling with I'm Nin Alu...ok, close your eyes and listen...we miss you all...rest in peace...
Personally, I don't need to understand the lyrics, the words are creating a melody of their own and this adds up to the overall musical portrait. Just like any other intrument, really. She introduced me to "arab" singers and I am glad about that!
One last thing, I am glad to know all you guys feel the same!
One of the most beautiful voices ever...I didn't understand the lyrics because I don't speak Hebrew or Arabic but her singing transcended all language and cultures (unless one just wants to hate). Such a tragic death. May her memory be eternal.
I wished that most Israelis were like Ofra Haza, a so precious woman. Unfortunatelly most of the Israelis today are Nazis. It's a great pity, that would be a great disappointment to this LADY that sang the "MIDDLE EAST". She would be so sad about what Israel has become! SHAME!
I heard she did have AIDS and she got it from her husband who was a drug addict and a cheater. She fell in love with the wrong person. May God rest her precious soul may her memory be a blessing in Israel.
@kiwikate2 I read that as well, but that doesn't mean it's true. However, I also read that a year or so after she died her husband committed suicide...that makes it even more tragic for me.
When she met that creep her fortune was around 35 milions (bank account). And when she went to hospital several days before she died (weighing almost 75lbs), there was only several thousand dollars left.
I remember this song at most when I think on the big israeli Popstar Ofra Haza -- RIP ! A great GREAT SUPERSTAR who died too early at AIDS- Painful vor her family and her friends ..... But such a emotion-loaded voice !!!!!!!
@NThemightyI went to wikipedia after I made this comment. I feel so out of touch for not knowing. I think it was a very busy time in my life and I just wasnt paying attention. Thank you for letting me know. God rest her gentle soul. We, her fans were so lucky to have her this short time
i'm macedonian-christian,but i listen the music from ofra since,1987,i'm her fun all this year, quality of the music have no limits.i'have been in izrael in 1989,very beautifil country,i don,t uderstand the language,i have meat jews and arab people there,
Loooove this woman - when were looking at directors we were shown this video but it was the music I loved - sadly Ofra Haza is no longer with us. I bought the album but there were some naff euro pop offerings on it by far the best stuff was in her own language and style....
Mujer virtuosa, llena de virtudes, poseedora de una belleza especial y una voz serafica. Jamas habra otra como ella. Esa voz es como estar escuchando el mismo paraiso.
A virtuous woman, full of virtues, possessor of a special beauty and a seraphic voice. There will never be another like her. That voice is like listening to paradise itself.
@fuckdapuss yemenit jews may look to you similar to arabs but thats not true, they have different customs and appreance, and the yemenite jews language is not arab and not hebrew! they may look look like arabs because they lived in arab country. morrocan/iraqi/syrian/libyan/algerian jews may also apear to you as arabs.
far away from being Egyptian , Muslim and she is Israeilain and jew, but I am keeping to her all the respect for the perfect performance and the easy music touches any heart, either the Arabic words or the English words , both are nice and been used perfectly serving a great performance, but felt sorry for the old clip
Im a lover of music. All music! whether I understand the language or not and this cd was one of my favorites. My friends often wonder how the hell I came to know songs like this and all I can say is that I feel sorry for people who limit themselves to the familiar! needless to say, I was never in charge of the music when we went cruising, Haha memories...but i guess being half mexican half italian that doesn't speak anything but english listening to Ofra Haza does seem a bit off. Cool!
@yvie7777 You're awesome, if the music speaks to your soul who the hell cares if it's in some unintelligible, unwritten language even! Stay true to your musical taste, there's so much music out there just waiting to be discovered by ears that are willing to listen to the beauty, regardless of language and culture. After all, beauty itself lies within that wonderful mosaic I like to call variety.
I"m the same way. I love music from many different cultures. I think people miss out when they only listen to one type of music. There are many great singers around the world, Ofra being one of them. Thanks for posting this song.
