  • haha peep Evan Dando over J's right shoulder!

  • Yeah, disastrous sound, but in the context thrilling nonetheless. I was watching this when it was broadcast ('92, I think, certainly no later) and it was superb to see J. and the gang on live TV.

  • nice guitar: les paul gold top with p-90s

  • I love this song, but this performance is below standard.

  • Who's that on drums?

  • I think it's about time J. Mascis fired his vocal coach.

  • @minedarea Only if you fire your commenting coach first

  • @AgentCarter good call. this sounds like shit. but interesting all the same.

  • i think one of J's patch cables got loose at some point... sounded pretty rad anyway :]

  • this sounds horrible. what the fuck

  • @AgentCarter i know right

  • Thanks for posting this. I was in the audience that night (to the right of Evan Dando) and I remember being stuck in the dump of a studio for the show just so we could See Dinosaur Jr. My VHS copy died long ago so it's great to see this again.

  • Evan Dando is a great dancer.

  • Thanks for shytting on one of my favorite songs J.

  • after listening to this i can really see how nirvana was influenced by them nirvana sound resembles thew a lot

  • look forward to the guy with a Laudrup T-shirt of Barcelona in minute 3:30

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    such a 90´s

    love it!

    great regards...

  • Single coil on a Les= tearing assholes, in a good way. I like these guys

    Nice pop sense as well

  • (spazzy) (lazy) (high) crowd. awesome song. why'd he choose a les paul? he could do so much more on a jazzmaster

  • he used a les paul (and an sg) on the whole Where You Been album, then junked it for recording claiming it sounded 'too clean'. NB: he does use a les paul jr for rythym guitar tracks when he records even now (beyond, farm ,etc)

  • j has said he likes the gibson les paul for rhythym guitar, it does havea thickerless twangy sound than the fenders he normally uses, so i can see why. it does look odd to see him without his jazzmaster/telecaster though....

  • This could be Dino Jr best song listen to the record version. Does anyone who where I can get "Misunderstood" by Dino Jr and written by Richard Thompson. i WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU COULD POST IT .. DON'T CARE ABOUT THE VIDEO.

  • "his guitar is just making noise"

that pretty much sums up dinosaur jr

    epic

  • It's Mike Johnson on bass, who took the position after Barlow left. He's on some of the live stuff on the Whatevers Cool With Me EP. The drummer is some cat that played in another band called Gobblehoof. The "plastic" setting is indeed a surreal one for D.J.. A bit like the nerd at the prom...

  • I kinda like the Les Paul here just for variety's sake. With the loud bass, they made me think of the Who a little. Also, I love J's vocal on this. He doesn't scream much usually, but here he lets it fly. They sound very raw in a good way here, the fact that it is in such a plastic setting makes it better.

  • also i hate to say but thats not lou barlow on bass kiddies they only reformed original line up in 06 and lou is a beefy brunettte with mop locks.

last point to some is that joe was quoted as saying kurt cobain "was light years ahead and an inspiration for fossils like me"sorta sounds like he didnt have much hate there so stop beating up stories and get back to your playstations kiddies

  • maybe a lip sync would be great for some demographics(utube offspring maybe)is truly a raw and live set is risky but is pure music.

  • I totally take back what I said about "Where You Been". I didn't get enough time to soak it all in, and I fucking love it.

  • Mike Johnson!

  • the point is: Dinosaur jr ROCKS!

and "Where You Been " is a great album!

  • really hilarious.

  • All the grunge kids are hilarious :P

  • i agree

  • Mike Johnson is badass bassplayer. He made some very cool melodic basslines in dinosaur jr. listen to Out there for instance. He adds more to the song than Lou Barlow does. My opinion.

  • no fucking way man!! sorry but nothing compares to lou hitting the hell out of those bass chords

  • Unfortunately hitting the hell out of things isn't quite the same as playing well

  • it is in Dinosaur Jr mate

  • No, it's not. You're thinking of metal bands perhaps, but Dinosaur Jr don't go for that mall rat demographic

  • What so only metal 'mall rat' bands use bass chords? do you know ANYTHING about bass? or music for that matter?

there i was thinking one of dinosaurs main genre influences was punk rock. nope completely wrong i was. yep ofcourse. wrong wrong wrong

    retard

  • Nice reasoned argument Adamski, or should I call it a rant with added schoolboy sarcasm and insults? Punk rock obviously influenced just about everything that came after it, either overtly or covertly, but it's as well to remember that of the original punks Glen Matlock was quite a melodic bass player and didn't 'hit the hell' out of anything except maybe his band mates. I wasn't referring to the use of chords. Maybe the red mist blocked your vision there for a bit? Think before you type. Mate

  • think you misunderstoond me, 'mate'. when i said hitting the hell out of the chords i meant Lou's agressive playing style, he doesn't just randomly hit his bass (maybe you should go watch a video of them playing live). the whole point of dinosaur is the aggresive playing style, which wouldn't be the same without Lou. you clearly don't know a lot about playing music if you think playing with agression isn't 'playing well'.

  • No he's totally right. He should have just done what Glen Matlock did. Cos there's nothing less punk rock than doing something a little bit different. /sarc.

  • My point was that not all punk rock was aggressive. To say Punk = Aggression is to make the sort of error that the tabloid newspapers made at the time. In 1977 I was a 17 year old punk living in a squat in North London. I do therefore have a better perspective than people just discovering punk via YouTube

  • ohhh okay we'll all bow down to your insightful punk knowledge. gimmie a break. i'm not gonna sit here arguing with someone so please just enjoy the music

  • I do enjoy the music, I also enjoy debate. I don't enjoy people who haven't the faintest idea of what they are talking about coming on strong with half arsed opinions all because they once took a few guitar lessons. You could rein the sarcasm a bit too because you know what the say about sarcasm don't you.

  • a few guitar lessons? i've been playing music for a good 6 years now and have been studying it for a long time aswell. simple put: you're a wanker. i don't care for your opinion neither does anyone else here, so just take your 'debate' and fuck off please. i usually don't reply to flamers on here, but you're so far up yourself you can't let anyone else have an opinion. that's very punk isn't it. heh

  • Ah yes, the 'I've been playing xx years' statement. It's always the amateur musicians that try to show off on these things. As to what everyone else here thinks, aren't you being a bit presumptuous speaking for them? A bit 'up yourself" perhaps?

Flame? My posts have contained no swearing or crass insults, unlike yours. How do you define flame? Of course you're entitled to your opinions, but you're not entitled to start getting ugly and rude when someone challenges them in a reasonable manner..

  • Yes my musician statement, somewhat compares to the "I was a xx year old punk living in a squat in xx". Do you always talk down to people or is it just when you don't want to accept their opinion? As much as i'd love to sit here and verbally own you, i have better things to do. Carry on replying to these if you wish, i won't read them. i have better things to do than argue with old bitter 'punks'. heh

  • I didn't ever think Lou randomly hit the bass. That would be classed as 'not playing the bass' by most people.

I didn't know that the 'whole point' of Dino was the 'aggresive playing style', (sic). Your simple-minded initial statement called out for a balancing comment from someone with a bit more taste. So I made it,

  • J Mascis.... with a Jazzmaster!?!? Ridiculous.

  • without*.... Doh. Anyways, "Where You Been" was one of their worst albums.

I lay the blame entirely on that Les Paul.

  • thats insane Where You Been was one of their best 90s albums

  • To each his own, I guess. I mean, I love "Hand It Over", and a lot of people hate that album.

  • yes good point..all Dino is great to me, lets just hope J plays his jazzys on the new record : )

  • love dinosaur JR with a passion

  • god damn J knows how to tame a guitar

  • The presenter you see right at the very end is an absolute cunt.

  • If you're refering to Terry Christian I could not agree with you more!

  • He's such a tosspot, they had him on this Cobain documentary talking about how lame he was. What the fuck!?

  • Which documentary would that be? I've read a few interviews where J said "Nirvana were great".

  • No, not J! The presenter, he's an absolute arsehole.

  • Is J using a les paul?

  • i don't like it. stick to the jazzmaster j

  • I remember watching this

such a long time ago now

    Who is the female drummer?

  • I am almost certain that is Lynn Perko from the hardcore punk band The Dicks and more recently of Imperial Teen. I am not sure why she was playing with dinosaur jr. check out the imperial teen "you're one" video. I am pretty sure they are the same person.

  • cheers Dude!

    Got to be her

    thanks

  • Doesn't look like Lynn Perko to me

  • that's for sure Lynn Perko. Check out the intensity. She's the premier girl drummer of the alt-rock era. Who else could that be? Check out youtube video of "sister double happiness, dicks hat police" from the same era. It's for sure the same chick.

  • WHat a cool live version. J sounds awesome, and that drummer kicks butt and sounds even better. When did Dino have a hot chick drummer? She puts murph to shame in terms of hottness.

  • Yes she is a hottie. J should have rocked with her instead of murph. Murph is overweight and bald. While this chick is the kind of girl you really want to give it to. Plus she might be a better drummer.

  • @pussyflavoredtwinkee

    Nice handle

  • This is great. Mmm, too bad about that Gibson though.

  • its just a Fender Jazz, probably the '62 re-issue

  • can anyone tell me what kind of bass he uses in the video?

  • Classic. I actually remember watching this on The Word !!

  • i remeber buying a casette record of this band in 93, and this song suddenly became my favorite song on where you been, love this band 2nd to nirvana.

  • NO J DONT GO TO GIBSON! DONT GO TO THE DARKSIDE! in my opinion fender is wayyyy better

  • won't someone post the actual music vid for this song?

  • THIS IS THE ONLY VIDEO OF THIS SONG!

Too bad this was just a bad day bass came in a bit early & J had tech problems with his guitar `

  • this show was obviously brilliant... 90s were strange

  • 'The Word' was a lot of things; brilliant wasn't one of them.

  • Never seen a man simultaneously make love/fuck/rape/slap down his guitar in one song like

    J.

  • Why is he playing an LP here???

  • J used LP's with P-90's for a lot of rythym tracks on Where You Been and othe '90's albums. He hates them for leads though

  • I'm not a fan of LP's either, although I have two. They have humbuckers mind.

  • i stick with my trusty Mustang from the late '70's never failed me once

  • Yo, I just noticed something- that's Evan Dando to J's right! The tall, long haired guy, groovin' is Evan. I know he was friends with J and I remember seeing him live with Murph on drums.

  • Oh yeah! Yeah I seen him with Murph on drums too. Great band

  • It was indeed Evan Dando to the right. I was standing alongside him in the audience. This show also had some of the Baywatch cast in it. Dinosaur Jr and Baywatch all in the same room, what class.

I still have a video somewhere with the show recorded on it.

  • dig that crazy solo cool cats

  • It's like being on acid

  • That clip has been cut/edited. As I remmeber it wasn't the break they played through - it was a video clip of Terry Ducworth from Coronation Street. When the VT had run they were still playing. I was in the audience for this - down the front with long brown hair and the purple cow t-shirt. Great days.

  • This brings back the memories! Mascis is a god!

  • Damn right they were playing when they came back after the break. The Word was shit (except when Mark Lamarre blanked Shabba Ranks for being a homophobe) but we were young, bored and very stoned. There was something good on after it, I think? Got any crisps? Oh look, a squirrel....

  • Shabba Ranks excuse for singing songs about putting de bullet in de batty man head was "The Bible say MULTIPLY and I live by the Bible" to which Mark replied "Thats bollocks". Shabba was supposed to perform with Mark Wahlberg but MW refused. Off my head at the time but I still remember it. Was the Adam and Joe Show on afterwards? And where's Hufty?

  • Wow, props to Mark Wahlberg for refusing to go on with the homophobe.

  • Mark Wahlberg was standing on stage next to Ranks. The presenter Mark Lamarr knew something was wrong on got on the stage to ask why they were both just standing there. MW said something like "this ain't gonna happen" so ML said "That's the end of the show" and that was it!

    Fair play to MW.

  • Thanks for the info. Was never a big "Marky Mark" fan, doubt too many Dinosaur Jr are (LOL!), but respect where respect is due.

  • You made me laugh.

    -Out loud!

  • I think this has been cut. If I remember correctly they carried on playing thru a commercial break and were still playing when the programme went back on air. The look on Terry Christians face was relief that they stopped. I don't think the guitar screwed up, I imagine Mascis was pissed at the pathetic English audience. Mascis IS God.

  • Brill - I had this on VHS and lost it. I love YouTube

  • Mascis is GOD.

  • jesus the 90's were shit...

    dinosaur jr fucking rock... ftw

  • he looks kinda bored....

  • and the look on that twat terry christians face is a bit good too at the end

  • Ha! I remember this first time round, Gawp in amazement at Da yoof doing MC Hammer dancing to Dinosaur Jr.

  • J's guitar/rig goes funky in just about any live stuff they ever do!

  • Did J's guitar screw up half way through?

  • Sounds like he kicks a lead out of a pedal right at the start of the solo and only fixes it during the outro.. Still, I prefer the roughness of this performance to the record which is a bit slick and clean for my taste.

  • its from a long defunct uk friday latenight show called "the word"

  • weird uk performance. ?Thanks?
