Yeah, disastrous sound, but in the context thrilling nonetheless. I was watching this when it was broadcast ('92, I think, certainly no later) and it was superb to see J. and the gang on live TV.
Thanks for posting this. I was in the audience that night (to the right of Evan Dando) and I remember being stuck in the dump of a studio for the show just so we could See Dinosaur Jr. My VHS copy died long ago so it's great to see this again.
he used a les paul (and an sg) on the whole Where You Been album, then junked it for recording claiming it sounded 'too clean'. NB: he does use a les paul jr for rythym guitar tracks when he records even now (beyond, farm ,etc)
j has said he likes the gibson les paul for rhythym guitar, it does havea thickerless twangy sound than the fenders he normally uses, so i can see why. it does look odd to see him without his jazzmaster/telecaster though....
This could be Dino Jr best song listen to the record version. Does anyone who where I can get "Misunderstood" by Dino Jr and written by Richard Thompson. i WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU COULD POST IT .. DON'T CARE ABOUT THE VIDEO.
It's Mike Johnson on bass, who took the position after Barlow left. He's on some of the live stuff on the Whatevers Cool With Me EP. The drummer is some cat that played in another band called Gobblehoof. The "plastic" setting is indeed a surreal one for D.J.. A bit like the nerd at the prom...
I kinda like the Les Paul here just for variety's sake. With the loud bass, they made me think of the Who a little. Also, I love J's vocal on this. He doesn't scream much usually, but here he lets it fly. They sound very raw in a good way here, the fact that it is in such a plastic setting makes it better.
also i hate to say but thats not lou barlow on bass kiddies they only reformed original line up in 06 and lou is a beefy brunettte with mop locks.
last point to some is that joe was quoted as saying kurt cobain "was light years ahead and an inspiration for fossils like me"sorta sounds like he didnt have much hate there so stop beating up stories and get back to your playstations kiddies
Mike Johnson is badass bassplayer. He made some very cool melodic basslines in dinosaur jr. listen to Out there for instance. He adds more to the song than Lou Barlow does. My opinion.
Nice reasoned argument Adamski, or should I call it a rant with added schoolboy sarcasm and insults? Punk rock obviously influenced just about everything that came after it, either overtly or covertly, but it's as well to remember that of the original punks Glen Matlock was quite a melodic bass player and didn't 'hit the hell' out of anything except maybe his band mates. I wasn't referring to the use of chords. Maybe the red mist blocked your vision there for a bit? Think before you type. Mate
think you misunderstoond me, 'mate'. when i said hitting the hell out of the chords i meant Lou's agressive playing style, he doesn't just randomly hit his bass (maybe you should go watch a video of them playing live). the whole point of dinosaur is the aggresive playing style, which wouldn't be the same without Lou. you clearly don't know a lot about playing music if you think playing with agression isn't 'playing well'.
No he's totally right. He should have just done what Glen Matlock did. Cos there's nothing less punk rock than doing something a little bit different. /sarc.
My point was that not all punk rock was aggressive. To say Punk = Aggression is to make the sort of error that the tabloid newspapers made at the time. In 1977 I was a 17 year old punk living in a squat in North London. I do therefore have a better perspective than people just discovering punk via YouTube
ohhh okay we'll all bow down to your insightful punk knowledge. gimmie a break. i'm not gonna sit here arguing with someone so please just enjoy the music
I do enjoy the music, I also enjoy debate. I don't enjoy people who haven't the faintest idea of what they are talking about coming on strong with half arsed opinions all because they once took a few guitar lessons. You could rein the sarcasm a bit too because you know what the say about sarcasm don't you.
a few guitar lessons? i've been playing music for a good 6 years now and have been studying it for a long time aswell. simple put: you're a wanker. i don't care for your opinion neither does anyone else here, so just take your 'debate' and fuck off please. i usually don't reply to flamers on here, but you're so far up yourself you can't let anyone else have an opinion. that's very punk isn't it. heh
Ah yes, the 'I've been playing xx years' statement. It's always the amateur musicians that try to show off on these things. As to what everyone else here thinks, aren't you being a bit presumptuous speaking for them? A bit 'up yourself" perhaps?
Flame? My posts have contained no swearing or crass insults, unlike yours. How do you define flame? Of course you're entitled to your opinions, but you're not entitled to start getting ugly and rude when someone challenges them in a reasonable manner..
Yes my musician statement, somewhat compares to the "I was a xx year old punk living in a squat in xx". Do you always talk down to people or is it just when you don't want to accept their opinion? As much as i'd love to sit here and verbally own you, i have better things to do. Carry on replying to these if you wish, i won't read them. i have better things to do than argue with old bitter 'punks'. heh
I didn't ever think Lou randomly hit the bass. That would be classed as 'not playing the bass' by most people.
I didn't know that the 'whole point' of Dino was the 'aggresive playing style', (sic). Your simple-minded initial statement called out for a balancing comment from someone with a bit more taste. So I made it,
I am almost certain that is Lynn Perko from the hardcore punk band The Dicks and more recently of Imperial Teen. I am not sure why she was playing with dinosaur jr. check out the imperial teen "you're one" video. I am pretty sure they are the same person.
that's for sure Lynn Perko. Check out the intensity. She's the premier girl drummer of the alt-rock era. Who else could that be? Check out youtube video of "sister double happiness, dicks hat police" from the same era. It's for sure the same chick.
WHat a cool live version. J sounds awesome, and that drummer kicks butt and sounds even better. When did Dino have a hot chick drummer? She puts murph to shame in terms of hottness.
Yes she is a hottie. J should have rocked with her instead of murph. Murph is overweight and bald. While this chick is the kind of girl you really want to give it to. Plus she might be a better drummer.
i remeber buying a casette record of this band in 93, and this song suddenly became my favorite song on where you been, love this band 2nd to nirvana.
Yo, I just noticed something- that's Evan Dando to J's right! The tall, long haired guy, groovin' is Evan. I know he was friends with J and I remember seeing him live with Murph on drums.
It was indeed Evan Dando to the right. I was standing alongside him in the audience. This show also had some of the Baywatch cast in it. Dinosaur Jr and Baywatch all in the same room, what class.
I still have a video somewhere with the show recorded on it.
That clip has been cut/edited. As I remmeber it wasn't the break they played through - it was a video clip of Terry Ducworth from Coronation Street. When the VT had run they were still playing. I was in the audience for this - down the front with long brown hair and the purple cow t-shirt. Great days.

Shabba Ranks excuse for singing songs about putting de bullet in de batty man head was "The Bible say MULTIPLY and I live by the Bible" to which Mark replied "Thats bollocks". Shabba was supposed to perform with Mark Wahlberg but MW refused. Off my head at the time but I still remember it. Was the Adam and Joe Show on afterwards? And where's Hufty?
Mark Wahlberg was standing on stage next to Ranks. The presenter Mark Lamarr knew something was wrong on got on the stage to ask why they were both just standing there. MW said something like "this ain't gonna happen" so ML said "That's the end of the show" and that was it!
I think this has been cut. If I remember correctly they carried on playing thru a commercial break and were still playing when the programme went back on air. The look on Terry Christians face was relief that they stopped. I don't think the guitar screwed up, I imagine Mascis was pissed at the pathetic English audience. Mascis IS God.
Sounds like he kicks a lead out of a pedal right at the start of the solo and only fixes it during the outro.. Still, I prefer the roughness of this performance to the record which is a bit slick and clean for my taste.
