I never met a person who truly thought they were stupid... People generally come to their big picture conclusions early in life... Therefore in order to avoid the "stupid" label, they go through life accepting those facts/theories that support their conclusions and refuting those contrary to their conclusions... Their 'logic' generally is rationalization of their conclusions... We wouldn't want anyone to think that we are stupid now would we?

Then there's conspiracy where others look to take away and offer nothing of value. That happens all the time small or large scale.
