Where did you get this video? Is this "new" Twilight Zone available on DVD? I thought there were some excellent episodes on that short lived series. This was one of them.
The great message here is that those who believe in the Gods and those who do not both have something to contribute to our species, and we need not be enemies. Great stuff from Clarkie.
However in the short story the poor priest is left with his doubts and faith shaken and not given help from his friend the captain. I often wondered what Clarkie thought of this re-telling of his story. but then they changed so many of his writings to fit the screen.
Great story. As for mexman48... Go outside and feel the the sun, wind,or rain on your face. Touch the grass or a tree. Go out at night look up and see the limb of the Milky Way . And remember what a wisenob said, after someone said "There was no law or God west of the Pacos. Where people come. The Law isn't far behind, and if you around very carefully. You'll find that God already been there."
WOW, THEY ARE SO SCIENTIFIC!!!!. This mimicry for science makes me laugh. There is no science whatsoever in this load of crap. Besides, the CONCEPT OF GOD is ethereal not physical. Bunch of LIBERAL MORONS - those who produced this. They cannot grasp the meaning of the ethereal and the spiritual
[O]h God, there were so many stars you could have used. What was the need to give these people to the fire, that the symbol of their passing might shine above Bethlehem?
Fascinating story within a story within a story. Who were the two people talking? What was the planet they discovered? How did the star that appeared on Christ birth come from all this? Arthur C. Clarke can get deep as we well know from 2001 a space oddysey. He lived out his years on an island living a simple island life and lacking for nothing because of it. The peace and love he writes about are based on his own experiences no doubt. He loved sipping a drink and watching the sunset.
@MultiRan1 A supernova that killed a whole race of peaceful people at 3120 B.C. shone it's light towards earth ...which was 3120 light years away. The "star" in the sky for the wise men was the exploding star that killed all the peaceful aliens. It's like a sick joke.
It IS a sick joke. Atheist Clarke mercilessly criticized the haughtiness that is so typical of many fundamentalist christians (and muslims). By inventing an almighty Creator and talking themselves into believing they are his favourites, his chosen, they actually worship themselves. I admire Clarke a lot for having written this story.
What's also sick, is the syrupy morale the Twilight producers added at the end...I like the art direction, but otherwise it's a godawful episode.
I respectfully disagree. Well, to a point. I mean I understand what you are saying that there are many people of many religions that do act "haughty" regarding their religion. Without getting into a lengthy discussion on the merits of various religions (which I'm not really qualified to do) I'd say that there isn't any room for haughtiness for Christians (and yes I'm a Christian). "Where is boasting then?" Nowhere for the Christian. God did all the work, and all glory is his.
Thank you to the person who posted this. One of the best TZ episodes and Xmas stories
