Why does it take an American (albeit a really cool one) to point out our failings, or that of our leaders, on national TV? This issue should never have happened, let alone got onto the media!!!
I suppose that is because we are human being before being citizens of a given country. I mean, being a French patriot rather helps me understanding British or US patriotism.
As for the Queen not being invited to D.Day celebrations, I maintain what I wrote down here, yet note that 2009 was not a major celebration, as 1994 was (50th anniv.).
Not the point! Every other nation invited had their heads of state invited! Why did the French government ignore our Queen? It has been viewed as a direct insult by your leaders to our Queen, a very clear message by your president on his stance towards the UK! I'm sure not all French people feel this way, but it is too late, the damage is done!
Agree. Let's hope that in 2012 we will elect a president with better manners and brain than our present Hungarian dwarf. Not everybody is able to sit on De Gaulle's chair.
Because I have had close French friends in the past, I am able to view the French outside their politics too! But I still find French politics overall, especially recently, very troubling, and French leaders have caused the UK some amount of problems! Again this does not reflect on the people, rather the bad attitude of the politicians of your nation! For the record, I am not in favour of the EU, and believe we should separate from the EU in all but trade! This is a common feeling in the UK!
Sometimes it's bad enough being British, without taking account all the things we have to tolerate here because the EU says so! France for the French, Britain for the British!
Right. I'd really love us to break with the EU, and see these dull Eurocrats alone with their East-European "enthusiasts". Or at least take EU principles literally, and open the EU civil servants job market to Rumanian officials at Rumanian salaries. It would kill much of Brussels costs and perhaps the EU itself.
I also agree 100%. Gorden Brown is a Party Politicion who can only represent the part of the Country that voted him into office (Except that he wasn't voted it) The Queen represents the ENTIRE country. She more than anyone should have been invited over. Who the Hell does Brown think he is. Good on Jerry for speaking out.
I can understand that he represents "part" of your country but how do you know your queen ACTUALLY represents the entire country? I mean there must be some English citizen out there who doesn't like the queen or doesn't like Prince Harry.
Because it Is The Only System That Represents The Entire Political Spectrum From Left To Right. No Party Could Do That. Yet she is also politically neutral, and is someone that the entire country can look to as a figurehead that is above party-politics. She is also there to represent the minorities of Britain through her role as head of the Commonwealth, and because she is not elected figure, she can do so.
Take a look at the Queens golden Jubilee and at the pictures of the people there. Youll see minorities waving Union Jacks, North Irish Flags aside English Flags, Welsh Flags aside Scots Flags. Youll see Black and Asian people with union jacks painted on there faces. You dont see that behaviour in front of 10 Downing Street.
Its because she represents them all of us. In Britain you can feel Proud to be British and yet ashamed of the Political Party That Happens To Be in power You dont get that in other Countries.
Put this way, Politicians serve majorities because majorities put them in power. But for the Queen, who is looking far beyond the next 4 to 10 years the picture is different. It is in her interest to make sure that all the people in her country are represented.
Agree 100% with that. Whatever our officials say, We, the people of France, do invite Her Majesty the Queen to the D.Day celebrations ! That's the least we can do to thank her personally, and Great Britain in general.
Thanks for this comment - it's good to know that the French people have common sense and a respect for history. These celebrations should be organized by PEOPLE not politicians! Merci!
GOD BLESS OUR QUEEN... don't worry, ma'am, we all love you!
