I love this song. I read that he originally wrote it for his son, Jean Marc. To me it became a special kind of love song when I had a young son. I love to hear him sing it.
I have Contacted Hal Leonard Publishing about releasing a book of the complete Lyrics Of Rod Mckuen maybe if more of Rod's fans could please contact them we could get this book published?
A lovely video paying tribute to Maggie Smith and Rod McKuen. She's a grand dame among actors, and he, though he's not a great singer, wrote a wonderfully poignant tune.Thank you both for being among us. We need more people like this.
What a wonderful song. Listening to it brought back memories of long ago when life was more simple and young men and women took time to stop to smell the roses and just enjoy being alive. Rod McKuen had it right. Read his poems. My grandchildren have and like them-amazing in this day!
Rod McKuen. To those of you over 40, do yourselves a favor; get one of his albums (DVD, ok?) and play it while with your significant other. I promise that you will be glad you did. We sixties kids dreamed big dreams and fell in love to his music. The problem: We stopped playing it.
I remember this from a more innocent time. I wished my name was Jean b/c of this song. Yes, seems silly, but here I sit all these years later with a few tears and a lot of wonderful memories of those days.
@pleasecho2 I remember that song. I think that the refrain went something like "Steel men, workin' on a bridge to cross that water, steel men, workin' on a bridge of steel". You can find it on amazon.com and can download the mp3 for .99 cents. Hope this was of help to you.
Almost finished reading this classic for the very first time - "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" - I was drawn to the Penguin classic by this beautiful song alone. What student wouldn't want to be part of "the Brodie set" with Miss Jean as their mentor- although she was harsh with the poor unfortunate Mary McGregor. Hope to view the movie very soon!
when my wife and I were dateing in the late 1960'S Rod McKuen was a favorite especially the album "The Sea" with Anita Kerr singers and Rod. Still listen to this album today.
Terrific tune, but it not really in synch with the movie, which shows Jean as unbalanced and dangerous, as against Miss MacKay, who is sane and responsible.
@goback3spaces I agree, it dosen't fit with the story. Miss Mckay was certainly sane, in a very stoic way - but there are touches of the ruthless wolf about her.
@GayGeisha True. Let's say that if I were on a blind date, I'd rather it be with Jean than with Miss MacKay. But if I had a daughter, I'd keep Jean far away from her.
I really think that Rod sings his song the best of all who sang it. His whispery voice and precise delivery is second to none in my opinion. This song among many others of his makes me long for the old days.
Rod McKuen,,,,,,,A wonderful poet, soft spoken, gentle , with a charm that is all but vanished, along with the most basic civility of todays world,as we are burried in the swill of moral bankruptcy of the soul mind and pocket book.....
Wow... I was thinking I loved Oliver's version of this song, and of course, I do... but after seeing this, I can say I love this version, too...and I like this video... I've never seen Maggie Smith this young... I don't know what movie this is, but I can say that she was probably wonderful in it... she had such beautiful, expressive eyes... one would know her anywhere, at any age.
In fact, I did find out where it came from shortly after this post, and rented it from Blockbuster... I'd heard this movie referenced many times before, but had never seen it (obviously)... it was very good, and Maggie Smith was awesome in it!
Rod McKuen is a talented American poet, singer, and composer singing his best -known 1969 song in the movie The Prime of Ms. Jean Brodie. Thanks for uploading this gem.
Who knows "Where Are We Now?" by Rod McKuen? Please send me the download because I really want that song but I can't find it ANYWHERE and I mean ANYWHERE. But it's a beautiful song.
Just like yesterday, I remember going to see this movie, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, based on the novel by Muriel Sparls. Both are important contributions to cinematic and literary history.
@imaliberal I stumbled across this video, (yeah, the song is part of my upbringing) and I decided to get the movie from the library. One week later, and I have my own copy! Less than $10, new, on eBay! Thanks for posting this, Charlie, and thanks for your comments, imaliberal - I never would have watched it, otherwise!
@imaliberal Too true, they are showing it on Sky Movies again. What a great performance's from Maggie, Robert Stephens(he was married to Maggie Smith in the 60s) and Pamela Franklin.
I hear this song on KTUC, KGVY, and KCEE in Tucson, Arizona. also KOY in Phoenix. Oliver, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Ray Coniff, and Percy Faith have done this song to.
