  • this song always reminds me of my late mom....Jean....makes a tear come to my eye

  • Such a beautiful song! And such a memorable film!

  • I love this song. I read that he originally wrote it for his son, Jean Marc. To me it became a special kind of love song when I had a young son. I love to hear him sing it.

  • Both Dame Maggie Smith as Miss Jean Brodie and Rod McKuen's vocal are superb!

  • Beautiful...just like the movie.

  • This is lovely thanks for sharing.

  • if you think bob dylan was a poet this man was a God

  • @mybosco30 This may be the best description of Rod McKuen I have ever had the privilege to read. Very well put.

  • a true poem of love

  • A lovely video paying tribute to Maggie Smith and Rod McKuen. She's a grand dame among actors, and he, though he's not a great singer, wrote a wonderfully poignant tune.Thank you both for being among us. We need more people like this.

  • What a wonderful song. Listening to it brought back memories of long ago when life was more simple and young men and women took time to stop to smell the roses and just enjoy being alive. Rod McKuen had it right. Read his poems. My grandchildren have and like them-amazing in this day!

  • Real beauty a pleasure to hear cant get fed up with it lovely

  • Professor McGonnagal!!!

  • 2:59 video: 1969 song Jean; written and sung by Rod McKuen (born April 29, 1933).

  • Stunning song, wonderful singer!

  • Rod McKuen. To those of you over 40, do yourselves a favor; get one of his albums (DVD, ok?) and play it while with your significant other. I promise that you will be glad you did. We sixties kids dreamed big dreams and fell in love to his music. The problem: We stopped playing it.

    Poignant, sweet. Wonderful.

  • @keatsgal1

What a wonderful comment. So true in every way.

  • The previous comment is NOT by metsrulein2k, but by his mom. He would never listen to this and certainly wouldn't remember it.

    Oops.

  • I remember this from a more innocent time. I wished my name was Jean b/c of this song. Yes, seems silly, but here I sit all these years later with a few tears and a lot of wonderful memories of those days.

  • Maravilhosa interpretação ...amei ...

  • Beautiful Song

  • It was a great movie and a beautiful song.

  • Anyone remember "Steel Men"? I've been looking for that everywhere. All I can find os a version by Jimmy Dean

  • @pleasecho2 I remember that song. I think that the refrain went something like "Steel men, workin' on a bridge to cross that water, steel men, workin' on a bridge of steel". You can find it on amazon.com and can download the mp3 for .99 cents. Hope this was of help to you.

  • Love this song . makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand it. Its timelessly beautiful

  • Oh my...that so far beyond excellent.

Thank you so very much for posting it.

  • Almost finished reading this classic for the very first time - "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" - I was drawn to the Penguin classic by this beautiful song alone. What student wouldn't want to be part of "the Brodie set" with Miss Jean as their mentor- although she was harsh with the poor unfortunate Mary McGregor. Hope to view the movie very soon!

  • Great film, superb song...

  • Was seeking Don't Smoke in Bed by Rod McKuen - yep, I used to have the album. Anybody got it?

  • when my wife and I were dateing in the late 1960'S Rod McKuen was a favorite especially the album "The Sea" with Anita Kerr singers and Rod. Still listen to this album today.

  • This is the very best version of this song. Truly sung from the heart

  • grew up listening to this song and others by Rod McKuen.

  • Terrific tune, but it not really in synch with the movie, which shows Jean as unbalanced and dangerous, as against Miss MacKay, who is sane and responsible.

  • @goback3spaces I agree, it dosen't fit with the story. Miss Mckay was certainly sane, in a very stoic way - but there are touches of the ruthless wolf about her.

  • @GayGeisha True. Let's say that if I were on a blind date, I'd rather it be with Jean than with Miss MacKay. But if I had a daughter, I'd keep Jean far away from her.

  • Fabulous song performed and composed by Rod McKeun. The whole score should be on CD

  • Fabulous song composed and performed by Rod McKeun. When is the full score being rekleaserd on CD ?

  • I really think that Rod sings his song the best of all who sang it. His whispery voice and precise delivery is second to none in my opinion. This song among many others of his makes me long for the old days.

  • Have you noticed that women used to have waists? It was definitively wearing good foundation garments...lol. Lovely neat dresses she was wearing.

  • Rod McKuen,,,,,,,A wonderful poet, soft spoken, gentle , with a charm that is all but vanished, along with the most basic civility of todays world,as we are burried in the swill of moral bankruptcy of the soul mind and pocket book.....

  • Wow... I was thinking I loved Oliver's version of this song, and of course, I do... but after seeing this, I can say I love this version, too...and I like this video... I've never seen Maggie Smith this young... I don't know what movie this is, but I can say that she was probably wonderful in it... she had such beautiful, expressive eyes... one would know her anywhere, at any age.

  • @ShadowsGathered

The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie...it's worth finding....Maggie Smith is stupendous!

  • @Poopaloo55

In fact, I did find out where it came from shortly after this post, and rented it from Blockbuster... I'd heard this movie referenced many times before, but had never seen it (obviously)... it was very good, and Maggie Smith was awesome in it!

  • Maggie Smith is absolutely brilliant in this film. The best performance by an actress -- in any year.

  • After hearing this several times now, I do believe I like this version better than Oliver's...

It's got more warmth and poinancy somehow

  • this song for the win!

  • Rod McKuen is a talented American poet, singer, and composer singing his best -known 1969 song in the movie The Prime of Ms. Jean Brodie. Thanks for uploading this gem.

  • very nice...thanks...

  • This is really creepy to me for some reason.

  • because it's good

  • Such a beautiful song and Maggie Smith is beautiful too.

  • simply beautiful. thanks for posting.

  • The best version of this beautiful song I t t

The best version of this beautiful song in my opinion is by Al Martino.

  • @Jetsam1934 Wait until you hear Aaron Freemans version which will come out in April

  • This song sure is lovely.

  • I have "Where Are We now?" sung by Glenn Yarborough, from his EACH OF US ALONE album Glenn Yarborough sings the words and music of Rod McKuen.

  • Who knows "Where Are We Now?" by Rod McKuen? Please send me the download because I really want that song but I can't find it ANYWHERE and I mean ANYWHERE. But it's a beautiful song.

  • wonderful song ....great performance..

  • jim nabors and bobby goldboro covered this song too but IMO olivers version is the best

  • Also Ray Conniff, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale, & Andy Williams did this song as well. Oliver's version is great.

  • Just like yesterday, I remember going to see this movie, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, based on the novel by Muriel Sparls. Both are important contributions to cinematic and literary history.

  • What movie is this!

  • The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie. Dame Maggie Smith won an Oscar for Best Actress.

  • I love Maggie Smith. Are they making any more of her?

  • Dame Maggie Smith is a great actress who also has two Oscars to her credits.

She won the Best-Actress award for the film "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie" and a supporting actress award for "California Suite"

  • just watched this movie , what a wonderful movie, in the day when acting was key. not explosions and CG.

  • @imaliberal I stumbled across this video, (yeah, the song is part of my upbringing) and I decided to get the movie from the library. One week later, and I have my own copy! Less than $10, new, on eBay! Thanks for posting this, Charlie, and thanks for your comments, imaliberal - I never would have watched it, otherwise!

Mary McGregor was my favorite! So cute!

  • @tomfarr56

Thanks for reminding me :-) Now I want to watch it again!

  • @imaliberal Too true, they are showing it on Sky Movies again. What a great performance's from Maggie, Robert Stephens(he was married to Maggie Smith in the 60s) and Pamela Franklin.

  • wasn't "Mona Lisa Smile" just a remak?

  • He's the greatest. And my niece is Bonnie Jean. She's only 30ish but I'm going to send this to her so she can appreciate her name and THE MAN!

  • Al Martino also sang that song.

It was another beautiful rendition and I would love it if someone out there could post it.

  • Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, & Johnny Mathis.

  • A beautiful song long forgotten .. thank you for posting and reminding me of past times!

  • I hear this song on KTUC, KGVY, and KCEE in Tucson, Arizona. also KOY in Phoenix. Oliver, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Ray Coniff, and Percy Faith have done this song to.

  • The Letterman did a great job on this tune also, I forget which album though.

  • Thank you.. a fantastic film and a fantastic song!
