just one thing. It was Brazilian Santos Dumont who invented the airplane. So I guess Brazil won this one. The Wrights piece of crap couldn't fly properly at the time. Sorry.
@TheArthkm Obviously you've never heard of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which would debunk your erroneous claim. Do your research before commenting and you'll look less stupid. You're a perfect example of the hubris Bill Maher talks about.
@TheArthkm Santos Dumont didn't invent the airplane, the french invented the airplane. The first fixed wing aircraft ever was invented in 1856 by Jean Marie Le Bris. As for Santos Dumont, he was not an inventor but a pilot. He just flew the plane, he didnt invent anything. And that airplane that he first flew on was made in France by french technicians. Even though Santos Dumont was brazilian himself, he had to go to France because in Brazil at the time nobody knew anything about aircraft.
@TheArthkm Not to take anything against Santos Dumont who was a genius, but to call him the inventor of airplane is an exageration. And Brazil had nothing to do with it, Santos Dumont did all his work and research in France because in Brazil he would have got nowhere. To say that the brazilians invented the airplane is equivalent to saying that the germans invented the blue jean because Levi Strauss was originally born in Germany or the italians invented nuclear energy because Fermi was italian.

Funny how this insignificant little shit on his cable-show is now making rules like he's king of the world.... he's a has-been who's projecting by being as obnoxious as he can in his remaining 15 minutes in the spotlight.
@SovereignStatesman Funny how you denigrate Maher and dismiss him so you can avoid looking at the unpleasant truths he points out. It is hubris and, theocracy and greed that will ultimately lead to the end of the American era. You have so much potential. So many brilliant thinkers that half your population ignores. As Isaac Asimov wrote, "In America, there is the false notion that democracy means "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." You epitomize that attitude.
Womens US beat france 3-1, and were finally going into the world cup. Its only bullshit when we lost [which is often unless its the womans soccer team]
the only thing they are #1 in is having the largest economy and they think thats all the matters. there are so many other things that go into making a prosperous country.
and personally i'm afraid the next generation is not going to help since they are more into mtv and their i phones than doing homework. its almost like a wasted generation
@tableturns77 Sorry :) Lewis Black once made a joke we should elect a dead person for President & you just reminded me of it & I wasnt sure if you heard it or not :P
What a crass remark. Furthermore, if the U.S. intervened earlier, and if you lived during that time period, you'd be screaming about how much it was investing in foreign affairs, would you not?
@l3lip Being a historian, dear, I think I have a firmer grasp of world happenings than you do. Sorry if the truth offends you, but then, most Americans seem to get their history educations from Walt Disney diorama displays and Hollywood films.
You've no idea who I am, where I've traveled, to what degree of education I possess and with whom I'm associated with, yet you assert that you are "a historian". Who says I'm not?
"most Americans seem to get their history educations from Walt Disney diorama displays and Hollywood films."
- And 70% of people who commit crimes are blacks. Thus, all blacks are criminals. See how fatuous that "logic" is? Yeah, you just implemented it.
Well nobody seems to ponder the possibility that maybe this isnt happening by some accident, maybe there are actually people who WANT to bring America down, who WANT to destroy Americas freedom and power in the world. Why doesnt anybody ever question that? Maher says that think tanks like PNAC and Heritage are simply dumb morons who are always wrong. Could it be, Bill, that they are very intelligent and KNOWINGLY lying! But noone can say that without being called a conspiracy nut, Im sick of it!
@Albyiscool How about compared to America 50-60 years ago? Or any other Western country?
I think that Scandinavia is a place where people can say they're honestly proud of their political system. Well, the Nordic contries. Germany. Perhaps Japan and Korea, although I don't know anything about those political systems. Not that I'm an expert on, well, any of the matters we've looked at together. In a broad sense, the US political system has sadly degenerated into a carnival. A big freak show.
@luv4knowledge Yeah, um. What is your point? Having all of those resources and still not coming by is not a reason to be proud of your political system - on the contrary. When the US was founded, it had, and still has, untold amounts of natural resources. Yet, people suffer from the all-consuming vines of capitalism. Katarina, e.g., could easily be sorted out with all of the resources and manpower the US can potentially muster up. The social advance of Norway, my country, is, I'll admit, a
@Pomme843 my point is b/c they have less resources there's more of a drive to cooperate rather than capitalize as is done in the US b/c there is so much in terms of resources and the few who have power want to control it; this goes even way way back to how homo sapiens evolved, power is highly desired always, hence our species is screwed.
@luv4knowledge So resource scarcity brings about cooperation? That's an interesting statement, but I think it's quite unaccurate. Norway has a much higher standard of living than the US - are you saying that if Americans cooperated more, they/you would pass by Norway in that parameter?
Also, do you think that the more resources/wealth, the more greed/power games, and the more poverty? Also an interesting claim, and I pose these questions sincerely
@Pomme843 by the way I visited Norway back in 2003, beautiful place....what I saw in Scandinavia was intellectual people not out to make a profit for themselves just for the sake of profits, but rather people who have a joyful vibe about life, they want to have a cooperative society. What I'm saying about the US is that b/c it's so vast and there are so many resources and capitalism is encouraged, it fosters greed and therefore poverty. I don't know if that makes sense but it's what I observe.
@luv4knowledge I makes sense, and thanks for your perspective on Norway!
I study political science at the moment (2nd semester), and finding caused corelations is an important part of any social science, so I find your view on why America is shit, interesting. But I think the "greed"-part is the most important aspect. India, e.g., is very poor, but the community is very strong and peaceful (many rural places, at least).
But really, I think Americans are much more lovable and outgoing than
@luv4knowledge Norwegians. Americans are much more eager to get to know strangers, have a good time, and just relax. Norwegians are much more introvert.
I served in His Majesty the Kings Garde's marching band, and went to the Virginia International Tattoo along with my company to perform. I tell you, American teens make the best audience, they really know how to greet someone apllauding. Never heard such a ruckus all of my life. Would never happen in Norway, well maybe in Trøndelag. Maybe.
@luv4knowledge result from the wealth that has been traded for our large oil reservoirs. A terrible thought in our time, since our understanding of the harm of fossil fuel consumption is growing. And Norwegian policies are way too generous and naïve; such a political system coulc never stand on its own without that oil income. Sucks as well, just in the opposite way of how the American eco-political system does
Ok, what about America 50-60 years ago was so much better? I think you are overestimating other countries. Politics is always a dirty business and politicians are almost always hated in their own countries. In almost all of Europe we see that they are just now trying to cut back on the excesses of big government with austerity- and the whole continent is nearly striking because of it. How is that better?
@Albyiscool we have mixed member of parliament (mmp) in New Zealand. Its not perfect but it sure as hell beats most of the world, so I guess you could say we're proud of our political system.
american football has fatasses blocking the quarterback & that's all they do. fast guys running to catch the ball while taking a break every 15 seconds to deciede what play they wanna do next. and that's just the offensive side. then u have a defensive side so the offense can rest. GAY! soccer; everyone has to be fast, strong, & u gotta make plays on the spot. no breaks besides half time. no formal planning in plays. p.s. american football is a weak version of rugby. watch rugby & u'll see
Don't forget that in Soccer they all walk around until the ball gets close to them, they flop around and fake injuries, and last but not least it's really boring.
very true about the injurie thing. that's the sad shit about soccer. but other then that, it takes a lot of stamina and skills to play it. american football is a good sport, but u have one person trained in one field. that person can only play that position. in soccer, u can have goolies make goals.
that was 16 years ago... the game has changed ALOT! watch the games in Champions league, or in the Premiership... the average player today runs in those competitions runs a minimum of 10K per match (matches held every 3-4 days)...
its boring as fuck, yea they are in shape, but im not gonna sit their for 3 hours and end up with a score of 1-0 ... rugby is ok, but football players are by far stronger, bigger, faster and smarter
what you just said is basically your opinion.and soccer is much tougher because everyone has to do and be ready for everything. in football, one guy does one thing. and they constantly take breaks. if football didn't have the 6-7pts system, then they would have a low scores aswell. it would be 3-4 instead of 21-28. p.s it's only 1hr30min -2hr per game. i never seen a game go past 3hrs.
but i have to admit that football players are smart to memorise all those plays.
soccer is filled with pussies. have you ever played real football? there is no rest. stopping for plays is about as refreshing as jogging and half-assing it in soccer. and lineman are probably more athletic than you. anyone who is 300 lbs and can run 40 yards in 5.2 seconds is not a fatass.
i've played football and it's a tough sport. but it just shouldn't be compared to soccer. you don't rest in soccer. football has several breaks. and play rugby- much tougher than football; and rugby doesn't wear pads or helmets.
Oh, Jesus...more of this BS? Yeah, and Japanese in Japan is called "Nihongo". It's all a matter of culture, place, etc. There are many different words for the same objects, ideas, and even PLACES (Spain = Espana). Why do people constantly insist on fighting over a damn TERM for a game? You call it football, other people call it soccer...please just shut up about it already.
Oh, this old argument again? Yeah, and the original term "football" meant a game played on foot (as opposed to horseback). Do you want to continue calling all foot-based games football? Languages are different, and languages evolve. As for the whole "egg" thing, a "ball" is defined as a round or roundish spheroid OR OVOID.
....Yeees, and "cricket" does not actually involve playing with insects, and "taking a shit" does not typically mean going out, finding a lump of someones feces and bringing it home with you....
I love BM but he doesn't understand real football--the world's game. See, the fact that we don't understand the world's game is correlates to our general stupidity and obesity. Holland? hash bars AND a great team. Brazil? Bikini waxes AND the world's best national team. England? best league in the world PLUS health care. The U.S.? morons driving stock cars in circles and 9.5 minutes of steroidal "action" is American "football"? Cheerleaders? Coors Lite? KFC? That's real bullshit.
@talyobirdsey Yeah, but we kicked your ass at Georgetown didn't we? We saved your ass against Germany. Now the NFL is getting HUGE ratings in England. Show some respect.
@darkwarriorkane Yes I know. The "Georgetown" thing was a line from "West Wing". Seriously, one of my greatest faults with the right wing of this country is their false patriotism. One cannot solve a problem unless one is willing to admit it exists. These yahoos that say "AMERICA IS # 1!" do not see to realize that statistically, America is not #1 in anything positive. Arms sales and arrogance, that's what we excell at. But we can't fix anything until we get control from the money men.
@darkwarriorkane Greed used to be a sin. Thanks to Reagan, Greed is now a virtue, and the sin part is just another of those things right wing "christians" don't mention from the bible.
@Xerock Really? What about it being one of the 7 deadly sins? What about "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven"? Want me to list a dozen other places in the bible where it says greed is bad? You must be talking about a different "Church". Either that or you are Mormon, because I KNOW they worship the almighty dollar more than anything else. Where did you get the idea that the "church" never believed greed is bad?
I didn't say the bible didn't say it was bad. I said the organizations that promoted it never thought it was bad, and I can prove that in one word: Indulgences.
Two more words: Vatican City
Three more words: Obnoxiously large cathedrals.
The only reason religion exists is to take money away from stupid people in exchange for the empty promise of posthumous immortality.
@Xerock Well, we agree on that point. Religion is crowd control. But according to the people who followed those religions, greed was bad for a very long time. Thanks to Republicans, it's now a virtue. However, we see that greed really IS bad. It's ruining this country, and so, the world.
@Mozart1220 And what about the places in scripture where wealth is a gift from God for being chosen? How many times have I seen the 700 club preach this nonsense crap that by giving to them, the blessing is "returned" by miraculously increasing the wealth of the original giver? The Bible contradicts itself on greed just like it does on nearly EVERY other freaking topic it mentions..
@Mozart1220 I am from the US. So you didn't kick MY ass at Georgetown. And YOU didn't kick anyone's ass at Georgetown. High ratings for American "foot"ball in England just goes to show that the US does not have a monopoly on stupid, gullible sports consumers.
OO One small itty bittty thing.. Edison did not invent the lightbulb. He bought the patent off of 2 Torontonian university students. Instead he invented the filament thread INSIDE the lightbulb.
@vitaminB100 - Edison invented almost nothing! He stole practically every thing he's given credit for!
And I'm not being some bitter "limey", because - while he is given credit for a few things that were invented by Brits - he stole many ideas from fellow Americans!
In most cases the closest he came to inventing things was coming-up with the basic idea, but getting his employees to figure-out how to actually make it work, and then taking all the credit!
ehmz, sorry I don't get you.. you mean muslims will be angry for saying I love how other countries talk about the netherlands?
or do you mean I should not love the way other countries talk about the netherlands because some angry loud group of muslims are bumrushing the netherlands? (both would make no sense to me) or what do you mean? =s
America has to be given credit in that they helped supply a vast amount of the materials and manpower required to fight both the European and Pacific theatres of war. However the fact it took Germany too declare war on America before they decided to help out in Europe (Even after Pearl Harbour) is disgusting.
Yeah God forbid we should stay out of other nation's wars and not escalate them into full-blown global armageddon.
And FYI , Roosevelt ATTACKED both Japan AND Germany long before either one retalliated... the thing about Maher is he can't decide which lies he likes and doesn't like.
You're right... America's education-system ISN'T the greatest. Clearly you can't read-- I just said that FDR attacked Japan BEFORE that.
Try doing some reading that ISN'T from your public school education... oh, but that would be thinking and finding out things for YOURSELF, and that clearly isn't encouraged in a government-lockstep gulag.

Seriously now, I'm brazilian and there is a line that I must discuss and is about airplanes.
The one who developed, built and take a witnessed flight in an motorized airplane that took off, flew and landed by itself was a guy named Santos Dumont, brazilian, in October 23, 1906 on Paris, France. All the project is reconigzed and officialized as the first suscessfull done by men, that is the recorded, official and correct knowledge, so this one must first of all knows what he's 'talkin about.
the US still has a lot of great people, but the average American of today can't hold a candle to the average American of even a generation ago, who made do and accomplished more with far less. our culture has also grown more crude, and crime skyrocketed. also there is still plenty of deadly racism, only it is directed in every direction but especially between blacks, browns and whites.
still, we are a magnet for people around the world seeking a better life. go figure.
@ellwyn America is a magnet for GREEDY PEOPLE who WORSHIP MONEY you idiot.
People who do not want to get RICH... FAST: do not come to America: which is 90% of the HUMAN POPULATION. America is the land of smug stupid fat spectators who LAUGH at the truth: and do NOTHING. Like you for instance... like all the assholes in Bill Maher's audience for instance: all youdummies want is a good laugh: and to hell with your country, to hell with everything: just sit on your ass and laugh at everything

Bill Maher is such an idiot, doesn't he realize that the immigrants coming into this country has lowered our literacy rate?? Also, the tunnel system under Boston is a total screw up, blame the city of Boston for hiring incompetents to do the work. Also, this is what happens when people get paid by the hour, they drag out the job.
Blame the immigrants? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? With or without immigrants our literacy rate would be the lowest. Our schools are a complete joke. Teachers are under paid, parents don't have the time or the resources, and TV replaces community involvement. I had no idea what I wanted to be until I was 26. I wasn't required to write research papers until college. When I have a question about the United States I call my Russian or German friends. I owe Uncle Sam 40k for basic education!
"this is what happens when people get paid by the hour, they drag out the job." YEP, I am a lawyer and I can attest to that. I'm serious. Ask yourself: Do you think there might be ANY relationship between the fact that litigation and cases take years to clear up on the one hand, and the fact that lawyers get paid by the hour? Hint: answer is yes.
We're not all fat. I agree with you about football, it's too violent. The players end up with serious injuries, numerous operations, etc. They do get paid alot though. Also, you Europeans can think you're superior but what would you do without America watching your back? China and Russia are breathing down your necks. China is a very opportunistic country, they are going after natural resources like oil big time.

@Albyiscool And why is that? There really hasn't been much to be proud of in US politics lately.
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843
Because he is an unfunny hack. Ok, compared to...what? Which country can honestly say its proud of its political system?
Albyiscool 1 year ago
@Albyiscool How about compared to America 50-60 years ago? Or any other Western country?
I think that Scandinavia is a place where people can say they're honestly proud of their political system. Well, the Nordic contries. Germany. Perhaps Japan and Korea, although I don't know anything about those political systems. Not that I'm an expert on, well, any of the matters we've looked at together. In a broad sense, the US political system has sadly degenerated into a carnival. A big freak show.
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843 Yes Scandinavia is socially advanced, but put all of them together and they don't have the natural resources of California.
luv4knowledge 1 year ago
@luv4knowledge Yeah, um. What is your point? Having all of those resources and still not coming by is not a reason to be proud of your political system - on the contrary. When the US was founded, it had, and still has, untold amounts of natural resources. Yet, people suffer from the all-consuming vines of capitalism. Katarina, e.g., could easily be sorted out with all of the resources and manpower the US can potentially muster up. The social advance of Norway, my country, is, I'll admit, a
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843 my point is b/c they have less resources there's more of a drive to cooperate rather than capitalize as is done in the US b/c there is so much in terms of resources and the few who have power want to control it; this goes even way way back to how homo sapiens evolved, power is highly desired always, hence our species is screwed.
luv4knowledge 1 year ago
@luv4knowledge So resource scarcity brings about cooperation? That's an interesting statement, but I think it's quite unaccurate. Norway has a much higher standard of living than the US - are you saying that if Americans cooperated more, they/you would pass by Norway in that parameter?
Also, do you think that the more resources/wealth, the more greed/power games, and the more poverty? Also an interesting claim, and I pose these questions sincerely
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843 by the way I visited Norway back in 2003, beautiful place....what I saw in Scandinavia was intellectual people not out to make a profit for themselves just for the sake of profits, but rather people who have a joyful vibe about life, they want to have a cooperative society. What I'm saying about the US is that b/c it's so vast and there are so many resources and capitalism is encouraged, it fosters greed and therefore poverty. I don't know if that makes sense but it's what I observe.
luv4knowledge 1 year ago
@luv4knowledge I makes sense, and thanks for your perspective on Norway!
I study political science at the moment (2nd semester), and finding caused corelations is an important part of any social science, so I find your view on why America is shit, interesting. But I think the "greed"-part is the most important aspect. India, e.g., is very poor, but the community is very strong and peaceful (many rural places, at least).
But really, I think Americans are much more lovable and outgoing than
Pomme843 1 year ago
@luv4knowledge Norwegians. Americans are much more eager to get to know strangers, have a good time, and just relax. Norwegians are much more introvert.
I served in His Majesty the Kings Garde's marching band, and went to the Virginia International Tattoo along with my company to perform. I tell you, American teens make the best audience, they really know how to greet someone apllauding. Never heard such a ruckus all of my life. Would never happen in Norway, well maybe in Trøndelag. Maybe.
Pomme843 1 year ago
@luv4knowledge result from the wealth that has been traded for our large oil reservoirs. A terrible thought in our time, since our understanding of the harm of fossil fuel consumption is growing. And Norwegian policies are way too generous and naïve; such a political system coulc never stand on its own without that oil income. Sucks as well, just in the opposite way of how the American eco-political system does
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843
Albyiscool 1 year ago
@Albyiscool we have mixed member of parliament (mmp) in New Zealand. Its not perfect but it sure as hell beats most of the world, so I guess you could say we're proud of our political system.

american football has fatasses blocking the quarterback & that's all they do. fast guys running to catch the ball while taking a break every 15 seconds to deciede what play they wanna do next. and that's just the offensive side. then u have a defensive side so the offense can rest. GAY! soccer; everyone has to be fast, strong, & u gotta make plays on the spot. no breaks besides half time. no formal planning in plays. p.s. american football is a weak version of rugby. watch rugby & u'll see
Arsenalsoccer014 2 years ago
Don't forget that in Soccer they all walk around until the ball gets close to them, they flop around and fake injuries, and last but not least it's really boring.

very true about the injurie thing. that's the sad shit about soccer. but other then that, it takes a lot of stamina and skills to play it. american football is a good sport, but u have one person trained in one field. that person can only play that position. in soccer, u can have goolies make goals.

andretheking86 2 years ago
what you just said is basically your opinion.and soccer is much tougher because everyone has to do and be ready for everything. in football, one guy does one thing. and they constantly take breaks. if football didn't have the 6-7pts system, then they would have a low scores aswell. it would be 3-4 instead of 21-28. p.s it's only 1hr30min -2hr per game. i never seen a game go past 3hrs.
but i have to admit that football players are smart to memorise all those plays.

Either that or you are Mormon, because I KNOW they worship the almighty dollar more than anything else. Where did you get the idea that the "church" never believed greed is bad?
Mozart1220 2 months ago
@Mozart1220
Xerock 2 months ago
@Xerock Well, we agree on that point. Religion is crowd control. But according to the people who followed those religions, greed was bad for a very long time. Thanks to Republicans, it's now a virtue. However, we see that greed really IS bad. It's ruining this country, and so, the world.

In most cases the closest he came to inventing things was coming-up with the basic idea, but getting his employees to figure-out how to actually make it work, and then taking all the credit!
