However, this has never been substantiated by games. In fact, all games that even approach the subject have them growing up in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Well, that tends to be the explanation given by fansites, but, like I said, their living in the real world has nearly no basis in-game whatsoever. The closest evidence is a very rare reference to their being from Brooklyn, but even then there is no indication of universe-hopping and it is not impossible that there is a place in the Mushroom World named Brooklyn.
