  • I can remember seeing Jeff St. John and the Copperwine in the 70's and seeing the Stones in concert around the same time. The Stones were the best concert I ever saw, but Jeff St. John was right up there with them and he could roll that wheelchair around the stage and do wheel stands and be every bit as entertaining as Jagger could move ! Awesome guy !

  • @ljfoto55 Well said :)

  • What a classic song that didnt achieve world wide recognition as it should have. The song title is made more poignant because the singer cannot walk. Wow he looks like Freddy mercury...

  • ......what a great voice!! love this track up LOUD!! - looking like Johnny Depp at times!!

    JSJ.

  • this guy blew us away at broadford

  • jeff lives in perth now keep a eye out

  • this blokes all class

  • psst, the guitar is not plugged in...how do they do that?

  • I meet this guy in the mid 70's after he was the main attraction and midnight oil were the support group at a night club not far from Central station in Sydney, believe it or not me and some mates played the pin ball machines with him a few roadie for about an hour after the gig, drinkin and laughin, he was suck a down to earth dude

  • Saw his performance at the White Sands Hotel in Scarborough in 1973. The White Sands used to get top groups in those days.

  • @freoboy Yeah, do you remember the 'Sandgroper' in Leederville, used to have some big names in the 70's, besides Fatty Lumpkin and Dave hole..lol

  • Didn't he once live in Fairfield, NSW?.......Brilliant song!

  • hes not off his head or anything

  • Nice memories.

  • Too young to get into most of the regular venues to see decent bands during 1969 - 1970, my mates and I use to travel up to Hornsby Police Boys Club. There we could see the likes of Jeff St John. I remember when they did Teach Me How To Fly it was always the highlight of the night. Other bands and singers I recall seeing at Hornsby...Blackfeather (with John Robinson), Wendy Saddington, Doug Parkinson, Taman Shud, Russel Morris, & John Farnham. The cost to see the shows? Just $1 !!!!

  • This song is great man, i can really dig this, and it makes me wonder, perhaps there is a whole world of Australian classic rock that I've never heard. Its making me trip bro just to think.... like wow... there are billions of humans and countless members on this spinning ball of love have made some really groovy stuff - fuck radio - free your minddddddddddddddd

  • @libertyandjustice

Australia has a great history of Rock/Pop/Blues performers who were only known in their own country and in New Zealand.

Look up Johnny O'Keefe "Shout Live" from 1959. The Loved Ones, Easybeats, Twilights, Daddy Cool, Chain, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs his early stuff and "Mama live on GTK". plus stacks of others.

  • @libertyandjustice yes there certainly was some really fabulous aussie bands back then, move a few years forward and check out a melbourne band MADDER LAKE,i'm sure you will dig it too.

  • americki skender :P

  • Great singer and great band. I used to be obsessed with this song! My sister and I had a chance to see Jeff and Copperwine at a club in Sydney and they were great live.

  • retard alert

  • An amazing talent, this is a real pop voice with superb instrumental backing as well.

I'm not sure if this band travelled to the USA ..they certainly should have they would have knocked 'em dead!! Thanks for the posting..great memories!!

  • Remember Jeff and Wendy harmonising at so many live cocerts... They were so talented and so professional... A great band and an inspirational man...They were so good when they supported the Hollies in Sydney....THIS IS A MEGA SONG!!!

  • Surely that's not Harry Brus on this clip. If it is he has lost some weight these days. Bass not low slung enough and just does not look like him, although you dont get a closeup. Anyone confirm who it is?

  • excelente cancion, que barbaro como canta!!! buenisimo

  • Anyone know what each of them are up to today?

  • Saw him in Darwin, i think it was pre-tracey so should be 74, absolutely fantastic, never forget this song, one of the great aussie rock singers.

  • Wow, what memories this brings back. I remember seeing him perform live in Surfer's Paradise when I as young. A great Australian Icon.

  • Fabulous. Thanks for posting - just love it. I saw Jeff St John open for Chuck Berry at Sydney Sportsground about 1974 from memory. Saw "Dr" Harry Brus a few months back in the Cotton Keays Morris backing band. Another piece of living treasure.

  • First live band I ever saw. The venue was called Wonderland and it was once a bowling alley then converted into a Rock venue (circa 1969-70) then back to a bowling alley. I was 14, had sneaked out of home and was scared shitless because most of the crowd was older. Still clearly remember the place and also saw Wendy Saddington and a band called Turkish Green Electric band there. Love Jeff's voice.

  • The general lineup for his bands can be found at the website: milesago.com/Artists/jeffstjohn.htm

  • omg i was so in love with jeff st. John, i think i still am, what an amazing voice, and what an amazing man! Love u jeff 4ever.

  • is phil wooding doing the guitar solo on this, i think the guitarist miming here with the band, pete green, from memory(sorry??). whats important is if phil wooding is playing guitar?

  • Still absolutely brilliant. Love ya Jeff St John and love this song. Happy Days.

  • Fuck yeah!

  • Great Talent!! Fantastic soulful vocals this guy would have been a sensation in the USA well anywhere for that matter but I'm suprised he didn't venture to the USA.

Great to know however Jeff St John is still performing in Australia delighting new fans as well as old!! God Bless you Jeff!!

  • Jeff St John, John Lee/ Drums, Rob Davie/ Base, Ian Finnie/ Ham'd, ?????/ Guitar

  • He had a voice!!!

  • Fantastic song and performer. Just shows how far ahead Oz music was/is? The US had Blind performers, we had an energetic inspirational guy in a wheelchair........Amazingly, now the kids have an inspirational guy in a wheelchair again too...in the Phenom that is "Glee" . I wonder if Artie and Glee crew, will ever sing "teach me how to fly" , now that would be fantastic (yes the actor can walk).

  • Used to see JSJ 1969-71 and remember him doing wheel stands on stage & at a gig @ Sydney Uni actually going off the stage.. world's first wheelchair stage-dive ? Great band wonderful memories of a teenage youth witness to music that only now I appreciate fully. My psyche was embedded with the likes of JSJ-Wendy Saddington-Chain-Billy Thorpe-Max Merritt-Tully-Blackfeather-Coloured Balls-La De Das-Heart @ Soul-Easy Beats-Loved Ones..and that was while I was still @ high school ! Heaven-been there!

  • @MalThorgan Saw him along with Copperwine supporting Led Zep, Sydney Showground 1972, still doing his wheel stands on stage. A great time to grow up, great music, great bands!

  • @Shortlegs53 ...thanx for info ....I saw that show, but we got there late so never saw support band..good 2 know now that it was JSJ !

Come to think of it I also missed a lot of the 2nd half of Led Zep....well I was there but briefly transported to another galaxy due to peaking on some "clear light" ! The show finished ,the entire crowd had left the Showground, and we still were struggling to find our way out of the stand ! hahaahaa Last trip I ever had-quit while you're still behind I reckon LOL

  • @MalThorgan Geez Mal...you're talking the talk ! What great bands U have listed ! I'd include Pirana...and others....good memories and like U I only know appreciate how great it was to have such good access to such good music.

  • @martindemo -yep, only saw Pirana once...BUT it was as the support band for Deep Purple-Free & Manfred Mann @ Randwick Racecourse...where I got PAID to put the chairs out & be a gopher ! Life's good or what !

Other bands saw included -Flying Circus-Zoot-Russel Morris-Freshwater- Leo de Castro-Doug Parkinson in Focus -Nutwood Rug Band- & obscure local Sydney bands like The Plastic Tears & one's I can't remember the gig but can't forget the name like "Turkish Green Electric Band"!! hahaa

  • @MalThorgan You've got some great memories there Mal. Feel free to share any more you have with us.

  • Rod R. Great underrated Aussie talent. "Teach Me How to Fly" and "Big Time Operator"more than a match for any international hit. Met Jeff St John recently--now Living in Perth's southern suburbs.

  • Great Song..!!! Great Singing!

  • Great voice!

  • God could Jeff make his wheelchair dance, what a great voice used to see him play at the Thumpin Tum.Sharyn.

  • It's also coming up to ten years since Jeffrey appeared at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics, singing the National Anthem and "The Challenge". What a magnificent performance it was.

  • @caz4777 i remember him singing that day , i'm thinking what a voice , he was introduced as Jeffrey St John , took me a while to work out who it was

  • wondering if anyone knows what happen to guitar player Johnny Green?

  • Comment removed

  • @caz4777 , thank your very much for your reply as I am seeking as much information as possible about John Green from Jeff St. John & Copperwine.

Are you sure about Johnny Green from the blues cowboys as think he is just in his early 50's . St. John - Johnny Green should be at least 10 years older. But I can be wrong as well. Any info would be much appreciated.

    cheers

    Manuel

  • @maloneyroo. Yes, the CD is available from his website. Just email him and he should write back to you with information on how to buy one. It is all previously unreleased material mostly from the 1980s. If you are a fan of his work, these CDs feature some of his best.

  • Superb rendition of a great over-looked classic. Loved this song since Rotary first recorded it. Magnificent performance here! Perfect! Thank you, made my night!

  • Awesome!! Great to hear this again! Thanks for posting.

  • OMG, so many good comments below. Yes, his version of "Can't Find My Way" and "Simple Song" were top notch.

I remember paying my 60c at the Hornsby Dance in Sydney to see him . I recall a wonderful free concert under the Harbour Bridge ( 2SM ??) about the time this single came out. and YES, I recall the free JJ concert a few years later.

I even recall being in PRIMARY school and standing outside "here" Disco in North Sydney and hearing him play.

  • Jeff and his his band should have been international stars..what a voice!!..and what a song!

  • What a wonderful voice Jeff St John had. I saw him play in about 73 at a big outdoor event out at Long Pocket

  • I will always remember seeing him at a 2JJ concert at Dawes Point in 1976 with his band Red Cloud, and Bob Hudson presenting him with his four day old daughter Jessica.

He does a very impressive version of "Sing a Simple Song". At the end he sings a verse from "When I grow too old to dream" by Oscar Hammerstein, I believe for his wife Pamela.

  • Amazing voice. Yes, used to see these guys play heaps in Melbourne. He does an amazing version of 'Can't find my Way Home' - A Stevie Winwood Classic. Love the keyboards in this. Oh how I miss these bands.

  • god this takes me back , thank you for a great post

  • I saw him many moons ago at the Sundowner Pub at Punchbowl. Good artist.

  • He has a three CD set available from his website of original never before released stuff. I bought it and its great music as always from Jeffrey

  • @Mrscunningfox I tried to track down the cd but cant find a trace. Is it new material or older, unreleased work.

    I'd love to hear it

    ~p

  • @maloneyroo Go to his website: Jeffrey St John & The Embers. You will find the CD is available there.

  • Still amazing. I used to hear this all the time, saw him lots of times in clubs in Northern beaches, Sydney. Jusy 10 feet away.

Live he was even better, powerful and soulful. The band is different. Use to have drummer with a short arm. Great disability band!. Also had great guitarist. Jeff you were an inspiration.

  • Thanks for that. It must be coming up to fifty years since this man embarked on his musical career - and he still sings well. I wonder if he has any celebrations in the pipeline?

  • What a gas!!! this guy was incredible.. Thankyou
