all of this is not beautiful, its all disgusting. the present is not different from the past... so making art suck and changing what it is makes us feel like time is advancing... whats so bad about developing a talent? can we really pretend that lazy bullshit is art forever? when will we move past this horrible phase? make something that impresses how about? dont just make something that you know will be criticized just so you can defend it and pretend its good stuff because its criticized
This is Contemporary British Art, a parochial take on the modern.
Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, and Gerhard Richter are all more interesting than any current artist Collings has discussed. But Channel Four's audience--the great English public--are understandably more interested in their own domestic art scene. His show hyperbolically claims Lucas is the contemporary Picasso and Hirst is Bacon; he's selling modern art as a lifestyle for young trendies, radical conformists looking for meaning.
