  • The Law and the Gospel are distinct from one another. The Law can not get people to convert or change the Gospel can. Most people merge the two. This would take a longer discusion than space will allow but Michael Horton and Westminster Seminary California have the best materials on this matter. I would contact them or the White Horse Inn guys.

  • I'm not saying that they are the same I am just saying that the Good News of the Gospel is what frees us from the guilt of the law.

We are no longer under the law but under grace-I know, understand, and completely agree, I just think that they must be confronted with the law and see sin as God does.

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.

This is looking to be an endless discussion through computer texts but maybe you can see the biblical point I am coming from.

  • Thats fine you can point out their sin with the law but pointing out thier sin wont get them to change. Only the gospel can change hearts. You can give them all the law in the world they'll just get worse and sin more. Alot of christians want to get people to behave but the power to comes from a sourse that is unfamilure to them. We all know the law but what is forign and strange to us is the gospel. The Law makes sense but it can't convert at best in it's 3rd use is its a powerless guide!

  • But without the law, people can not see the need for change...It makes no sense to tell people to come to Christ, if they do not know why...Someone who does not see himself as a sinner, has no need for a Savior..Although a Christian is not under the law, It is very much a part of sharing the gospel with those who ARE under it...

  • Just encouraging us to be on the same page...

  • True repentance can only happen by only preaching the gospel (i.e. Justification) and not the law. If you want peaple to have changed hearts you have to declare the good news of Christ for them and and let them know of their legal standing of favor from God because of Christ and that their repentance does not save them but is a resalt of Holy Spirit in them at work in them after being Justifies and declaired Righteous on the basis of Christ's active obediance imputed to them.

  • Amen. very true.

& I am glad Driscoll preaches that truth indeed.

  • Question:

How can you preach the Gospel and not preach the law?

If you leave out the law and don't let an unjustified person know their sin by confronting them with God's law what are you going to replace with the law that Christ died for?

Someone won't be sorrowful without knowing what they've done wrong. I'm by no means advocating turn or burn but I see no way to preach the Gospel of God's grace without preaching the law and our sin with it.

  • And yes, I know that remorse, or being sorrowful, does not mean repentance so there's no need to point that out.

I just ain't getting where you're coming from about leaving out the law from the Gospel.

    Explain?

  • @itube2208 read romans 6 and 7, that will help.

  • Amen.

  • One of the best chats on the subject I've ever seen.
