It was not written about his drug addiction at all. It was written about getting over a broken heart and laughing in the face of the girl who jilted him. It's a completely fictional tale that took on a different meaning later on in Elton's life. It was never meant to be the anthem of resilience it's now seen as.

You could definitely make a solid case for Freddie Mercury in the popular music world. He was incredible.

But there's no way you can compare even the best rock singer to Pavarotti. He was on an entirely different playing field. The man once received a world record 165 curtain calls after a single performance. You might say that Freddie Mercury was the best minor league pitcher ever, but Pavarotti was Cy Young, Roger Clemens, Tom Seaver and Greg Maddux all rolled into one.
