Isn't it a bit hypocritical to label all Conservatives in this manner? Most people I know who voted Conservative in the last election came from a variety of backgrounds and actually voted Liberal in the past. Most were simply upset with internal division within the Liberal party. They were not blind to the faults of the Conservatves; they just weighed their options. 3/ Dion's stint as leader/ sacrificial goat for the Liberal Party allowed the next person in line

( Ignatieff or Rae at that point in time ) a bit of distance from Chretien and Martin's final years in office. In other words, people hadn't had time to forget just how awful the Liberal Party was. The Liberals ran Dion as their leader knowing full well that he didn't stand a chance as leader. They were saving Iggy for a time when the party would be on more solid ground

with Canadians.

Iggy is basically saying that one third

- that's 33% - of his party's members are mindless lemmings. It's not a matter of the best person winning under those circumstances it's a matter of their leader winning regardless of what he/she may or may not have to offer.

33% of the Liberals voted for Dion and 66% saw him for the joke that he was.

The 30% of the vote that the Liberals have gotten in elections does not reflect 30% of Canadian voters voting for the Liberals. You have to take into account the members of other political parties who vote strategically against their own party. They vote Liberal to prevent the Conservatives from winning.

Agreed, my apologies. 30% of people who vote is what I should have said. Remember only a quarter or so of Canadians actually vote. Secondly, people vote for different reasons. Some people vote for a PM, some people vote for a Part, some people vote for their local MP.

Maybe I misunderstood your comment, but the 2nd option seems to contradict the 1st. If 1/3 Canadians want to vote for the Libs given a decent reason, then why did so many Canadians abandon the party with Dion as the leader? Undeniably there are a group of people who will vote Lib no matter what. But every party has that group, its the base. 2/ Dion would have been a joke on the World Stage as Canada's leader. English speaking Canadians across the country couldn't understand his english. English speaking Canadians would have ended up needing english subtitles whenever he spoke english on televised press conferences.

Dion was to the Liberals what Kim Campbell was to the Conservatives: a person who took the job as leader of their party because nobody else wanted it at the time.

1) The coalition occurred AFTER the election. Mass abandonment of the Libs occurred before this.2) Dion was and is well respected internationally in academic circles. He was a scholar at the Brookings Institute, chaired the UN Climate Change summit in Mtl. As for his english, Chretien wasn't a whole lot better and he did fine. 3) Dion became leader by mistake at the 06 convention. Rae and Iggy both ran against him, so their votes were split. That being said, Dion was a terrible leader, no doubt.

Get your facts straight! Harper tried to form the EXACT coalition in Sept of '04 when Martin was PM. Iggy didn't actually want the coaltion and stopped it from happening.
