It's pretty difficult to match the null (and the direction/bearing it indicates) that is produced when a loop like this is 'flat' to the signal source; that being said, an Adcock loop used in a more sophisticated DF receiver would offer benefits like being quicker to use and nearly automatic in operation unlike the loop used here.
An Adcock-based system would still show some difficulties (poor bearing) with a signal showing a high incident/incoming angle like shown here ...
