He revolutionised the sport to become safer than ever. To me he is the greatest when he did win old nurburgring round of f1 and won it by 4 minutes with a broken Wrist!
Jackie Stewart is such an excellent ambassador for the sport, to think that his teachers at school called him stupid. He is, in my opinion, super intelligent and a fantastically gifted driver.
What makes those 27 wins more impressive is that he did all that in a relatively short time, how can you call anyone who won 3 world drivers championships "Shit?"
Very good of him to talk about the accident in such detail and feeling bad for causing TWR a loss and the opportunity he had wasted. He stayed seroius throughout and didn't try joking about it. I liked that.
Definately a Mclaren, and has to be a 1988 as the roll hoop is exposed. Not Senna as his helmet would have stood out like a sore thumb and most likely Prost but I'm not sure if Mclaren had a test driver then or if so who it was.
oh man...I have heard that Jackie has quite an ego but he was very humbled by the accident he caused. Rightly so but nice to see that he owned up to it. Very embarrassing.
Way back in 89 I helped repair this car. It was very badly damaged in the shunt which doesn't look all that bad in the film but after a stripdown we found the front wheel had folded back into the carbon chassis which in the end required almost half of the tub replacing. The car had quite some history by then and with that quite some value, without which I feel it would have been scrapped.
I have photos of this car that Allastair Macqueen sent me and it is pretty comprehensively damaged. You can see exactly what you describe, where the front left tire was bent and pushed into the front left corner of the tub and subsequently that entire area was shattered! Davy Jones commented that the V12 was always trying to fall over on top of him, or so it seemed. Not a particularly easy car to drive and not ideal for an endurance racer. But gorgeous nonetheless!
Yes and I would be proud to have JS spin my car anyday. I'd think him for his time and continue in true fanboy fashion as it is JACKIE STEWART! Clearly, there is something wrong with the car. Stewart was the very best at keeping firebreathing, barely controlable racing thoroughbreds on the track. And in front..
Hmmnn.. Well at least he did try to push it to find out it's strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps he could have done with feedback from drivers who had spent much time driving it and who had driven it competively before attempting to extract as much as he felt he could in such a limited test period. Fortunately it didn't happen on a public highway.
He also stopped racing at 99 Grand Prixs! How many more races and championships could he have won had he continued?

he probably wasnt used to ground effects either. get the rear too far off the ground going over the rumble strips and you lose downforce.

I guess Emanuele Pirro was a McLaren test driver in '88.

You could well be right, t's definately something to look up though :D

@campbell53 By the sound of it, it wasn't entirely his fault though---it seems he didn't expect the car to be so back-heavy.
