"a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small!"
it's hard to really place why, I despise first person shooters, but this.. this is something special. this is my 2nd favorite game of all time (1st has no game, I don't want to define myself that much)..... so this might be my favorite game of all time, at least in the pantheon next to ocarina of time, shadow of the colossus, and the Metal Gear Solid series
This game is better than the second cause of the fact that it just looks nicer, and personally I like playing as a human character rather than a robot. I think the true sequel to Bioshock is Bioshock Infinite. But it's not really a sequel since the whole storyline is going to be different eh...
@CorporalActivist You don't play as a "robot" on BioShock 2. You play as an Alpha Series which is a type of Big Daddy. Bid Daddies are humans underneath the suit. Plus, Bioshock Infinte is nothing to do with the original BioShock
"They told me; Son, your a retard. You wouldnt know if you hijacked and crashed a major airliner over the atlantic ocean because some con artist asked you kindly."
Question: In Bioshock 2 you see how little sisters see Rapture, and in their eyes Angels are just asleep. How come this little sister knows you have to be dead to become an angel?
Andrew Ryans problem is that he created a society in which he thought he would be the most successful. Then he betrayed those ideals rather than accept that Frank Fontaine was better at it than he was.
@filrut and finally, Ryan built a city where people could achieve super human capacity. The splicers weren't a problem. The plyer and Vic Fontaine are the problem. Daddies protect the sisters, sisters recycle Adam. Eventually the splicers will reform or die and a strong society is left,. But the player comes and ruins that.
@LoklarYsera NO the splicers are the problem when you use Adam for too long and too extensively you become a splicer you go crazy for Adam and go for the little girls. and anyways what civilization would there be everyone's dead and the city would still be falling apart and it would just stay there not touch by man flooded completely and utterly .
@filrut bioshock isn't a critic of anarchism or libertarianism. I'm both and loved the games. Notice the little sister leaves you alone and scares off the splicers. And if you've finished the game, Ryan never raises an arm against you, and it was Atlas' manipulation that caused death in rapture.
@LoklarYsera The little sister doesn't scare off the splicers, the big daddy does. And how is it not a criticism? It shows what would happen in a truly free market society, a collapse. Sure you have the people who think like Ryan, but at the end of the day there are more people like Atlas then like Ryan and that is why a truly Randian society would never work.
Actually the first game is more about Communism - anarchy and atheism are strongly linked with the Communist ideology.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Also remember that Fontaine manipulated the masses by offering them a better life than the system of free competition offered by Ryan, but it was merely a ruse to create a full state monopoly & aggrandize his own power. Is that not what the Bolsheviks did? They offered a better way of life, yet created the worst & longest tyranny in history.
No one ever wondered how he mangaged to build a Megacity in a lifetime? Really, it's... the biggest plothole in history. Most cities take various generations to reach that level of development xD
@Kronosfall91 in Bioshock 2 they explained how the city was build... and now i will: it was rainy and bad at see. Ryan woku and and walkud upfront to he's boat. He said: STOP! here is where we are going to build. and so they let down an big dome with the city in it down under water. meanwhile they discover a VERRY big cliff under the city and the drug addam. Then they filled the dome with water and removed the dome.
@TehMinecrafter1337 so in one of what your saying... a lifeshock. Crashing from a place and therefor finding an underwater city isn't something you do every day...
"are you gay". Sorry. I didn't realize you were a teenager, I really shouldn't have wasted my breath. By the way, how can a society with endless competition between individuals and corporations with unlimited power possibly avoid insurrection and civil war? Frankly Ann Rand's ideology in practice would be utter anarchy.
Ultimately, good moral foundations are the key. Healthy competition is fine and should be strongly encouraged, unfettered by interfering and parasitic state bureaucrats who often corrupt and skew such natural enterprises, akin to what happens under Communist/Socialist states.
But, as Andrew Ryan and Rapture soon discovered, rampant capitalism and exploitational competition without moral foundations and notions of fair play lead to anarchy.
she hated anarchy, and believed that government should exist to maintain an objective order, in order to avoid what happened in rapture (in one of the conference said that anarchy would fall into the hands of the first rascal who use force), the rapture concept is based on objectivism and libertarianism but most of all was a total of anarcho-capitalism practiced, unlike the minimarquismo usually support both libertarianism and objectivism.
@htcfagg Precisely. The problem with both Rand and Andrew Ryan (And don't tell me that name is coincidental!) is that they both assume too much about human nature. They think that greed and competition can be controlled if you simply let loose people and their imaginations to do what they want. Chaos, mass murder, and anarchy will always be the result.
Rapture is kind of a mix between communism and capitalism. It's not the worst society ever made, Andrew Ryan just had some really bad luck, just like Lodewijck XVI. I think that Rapture is certainly better than communism and also better than capitalism. And if he was a teenager, why would you call him gay. That's really immature, and before you ask I'm a 29 year old black, straight male.
By the way: Have you ever noticed that even when Rapture had the highest of technologies and medical science available, they still coudln't find out the dangers of smoking?
@htcfagg "My god man, please be a troll", are you gay? And no, that wasn't the point. In an attempt to form a plot they had to create a conflict. In this case a criminal named Fontaine seeking to overthrow the establishment. So "Ayn" (check your spelling) Rand does in fact have the right outlook on how a society and government should run. You never even read any of her works. How would you know?
@DJFG85 You obviously haven't read any of Ayn Rand's work. You should, then you would realize libertarianism is completely lunatic and that a video game character would not make a better president than Obama.
@turokcalde You should search Milton Friendman (nobel prize winner in economics) and watch some of his videos. Than come back and say libertarianism doens't work.

@mebbwebb no it is actually a revolver. In a split second while confronting Andrew ryan, you have a flashback of the opened present. **MAJOR SPOILERS**
The note says would you kindly not open until... And then it says coordinates on the earth. The coordinates are where rapture is. We learn in the game that jack can be controlled by the words would you kindly. The gun is to hijack the plane with, the plane was supposed to go down at rapture. Andrew Ryan wanted jack to go back to rapture.
i want to be a big daddy i mean ur a guy in a heavy duty suit with a spiral saw type thing and some pretty awesome weapons in the other hand wuts not to love
I am Billy Mays, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to good products? 'No!' says the man seling Shamwow, 'You'll say wow every time!.' 'No!' says the man selling SlapChop, 'You're going to love my nuts!' 'No!' says the man selling Head-On, 'Apply directly to the forehead.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Oxi-Clean!
"Look Mr. Bubbles, it's and angel! I can see light coming from his belly. Wait a minute...he's still breathing. It's alright, I know he'll be an angel soon..."
Those little sisters are freakin' creepy sometimes...I really can't wait until I get the chance to play this!

@YourSuperman360 There's a flashback to the package during Andrew Ryan's monologue at the end. I'm sure you can find a stillshot online.

Fantastic opening for a bloody brilliant game. Best single-player game of this generation.

They told me, "Son, you're special. You were born to do great things."
Wish my parents told me that every once in a while.
