@epistrophy68 snowstorm5590 pointed out Hiram Bullock on guitar; I believe it is Tom Barney on bass and Philippe Saisse on keys- they were the regular "Night Music" band in 1989 when this was taped.
I've always loved Pharoah Sanders. I went 3 nights in a row to hear him when he played in San Francisco a couple of years. I couldn't get enough. Every night different. Every night intense. His music is so spiritual it's insane! What a blessing he is to us troubled mortals.
I used to listen to the Pharoah while I was working on papers in College. I love this man, truly and without pretension. He speaks to the piece of our beings that isn't polluted by . . . ." Amen.
I grew up on listening to Jazz saxophonist, I am a saxoponist myself. The young cats today are not able to play traditionally as well as David Sanborn who is for the most part known in the Smooth Jazz world. I have caught him a few times on set and he is a player. Pharoh Sanders is one of the last links to the real shit as well as Sonny Rollins.go do your home work young boys I hope I see you on the bad stand on a song with changes......until then
Great Duo on this track. I had the privilege of seeing David Sandborn in Northern Italy back in the mid-1980s and he was fantastic. The combination of both Pharoah Sanders and he are a welcome to the ears. It's too bad you don't get to hear the entire final set to this tune. Great music!
I also want to say that I LOVE Pharoah Sanders. This tune is one of my favorites but my all time favorite is "The Creator Has A Master Plan" with Leon Thomas' vocals. That is Absolutely Sublime!!
@grantyells, google "The Dozens: Hip-Hope Meets Jazz". From that article-"For well over forty years, jazz music and hip-hop music have flirted with each other on numerous occasions. When jazz artists began to experiment with sounds beyond free jazz and the avant-garde, they unknowingly helped plant one of the important seeds for hip-hop music. Hip-hop artists returned the favor in the 1980s, sampling some of the most respected music in the jazz catalogue."...There's more with a list of examples.

Schwweeettt! This is such a phenomenal album, THEMBI(1971. mca/impulse) and song. It appears we have Don Alias on percussion, which means we are in good hands. Stellar. I always held Pharoah in high-esteem with the other greats, and he played amazingly with Coltrane, as well. "The creator has a master plan. Peace and happiness for every man. The creator has but one demand, peace and happiness, through all the land".
typical david, kenny g and others will play with these brothers, go home work on the tune, go into study redo and make a millions, while the brothers are starving to get theire own show. welcome to america
There's something so sympathetic between this groove and the human brain, that I cannot imagine anyone not digging the groove and the melody of this song. One Of The Best EVER!
My only complaint about this video is the abrupt ending. This is special stuff. The sound quality is great and the groove is out of this world. Pharoah is, well...there are no words. And here Pharoah brings out the absolute best in Sanborn...and Sanborn is damn good. I want more...I would absolutely love about 5 more minutes of this groove. Anyone out there got it?
BTW, can anyone tell me if there is any way to download this onto an ipod? I have to say this is my #1 favorite youtube video. I want to take this one with me on my runs. Only way to do that is to download it onto my ipod. I'm not much of a techy, so any help in this regard would be most appreciated.
Give Sanborn a break, folks. He's never been a favorite of mine, and yes, he over-played, took off all his clothes, illustrated all the technique he could muster (probably learned in some jazz school), but look who he was on the front line with! How many instrumentalists can stand next to and play with the great Pharoah and compliment his music? I can't think of very many.
He's not very artistic is he? He's got good technical ability and Rhythm but he's not much of a mood setter, which is what I think the best quality of music is, setting a state of mind which Pharoah is absolutely great at.
yeah, love this man, its all about that night music. he can blow ovdr anything... i always wished they had someone a little hipper than sanborn, hes a little mean... still bitchin tho!
You don't even need to listen to this. David Sanborn and his horrible band kill this song. Pharoah Sanders' Thembi is wonderful piece that should be listened to off the album Thembi, not here. The guitar player is especially awful on this rendition.
While I agree that David Sanborn is fucking tripe, I think he did okay on this. I also think that the guitarist wasn't at all obtrusive. It's okay. It's not the best rendition of the piece. But it's not ruined.

smooth jazz ? you mofos do not no a damm thing about music i apologize for that . forgive me but please learn about the music, coltrane, miles, sonny, cannonball, zawinal, shorter, Mr. Parker,etc..............
im not crazy about the guitarist but pharoah sanders has a quality that is hard to describe and that is totally unique to him. He might me the most expressive player ive ever heard and he sounds great here. I dont know who the altoist is but hes good too. Sometimes when pharoah does stuff like this its on the verge of smooth jazz but the rawness of his tone sort of neutralizes it.
I don't know.. it's just if they both are not doing it it's really annoying to me. If there was an alto player who was just playing the melody while understanding his position of playing under Sander's powerful sound. Especially on the out head... it's just in poor taste.

Wow, that was sweet to say the least. Thanks man. Ooh, my first post on youtube ever and it happens to be about Pharoah Cool. This is one of his tamer ones. Thanks again for posting this up, got it downloaded.
Very spiritual. Pharoah is a master musician! David Sanborn is also a great player! Thanks for posting. This song has been in my head at times of distress and it never fails to bring calm.
anyone who enjoys this and wants longer solos.... I reccommend Summun Bukmun Umunyun, a 1971 masterpeice predicated on the holy Quaran, 2, 25;00 pieces.. and Cecil McBee on bass. truly inspirational
Why do people find it so hard to accept not everyone can enjoy the video / music they are watching?

IMO Sanborn showed of a little bit too much compared to pharoah's playing even though it was the end of the show
