  • Why do people find it so hard to accept not everyone can enjoy the video / music they are watching?

There is no law against it.

  • NO JAZZ LOVERS ON THEIR SOBER MIDS CAN DISLIKE THIS

  • This is New York Music!

  • Great to see this again.Passion, virtuosity, these cats tell the truth!

  • "MASTERFUL"

  • I don't understand 7 dislikes. Did people come here by mistake? This is such a beautiful composition.

I've seen Pharoah several times at Yoshis in Oakland. If you like this and have not seen him, try to as he is one of the true greats.

  • @MrHoolits Yep, dislikes are usually because people searched for something else and got somewhere where they don't belong.

  • life is beautiful when you can indulge in such melodies ......:)

  • Hiram Bulloch on guitar.

  • Absolutely amazing!!!

  • I recognize Don Alias on percussion and Omar Hakim on drums. Not sure who the guitar, bass and keyboard players are. Wonderful performance.

  • @epistrophy68 snowstorm5590 pointed out Hiram Bullock on guitar; I believe it is Tom Barney on bass and Philippe Saisse on keys- they were the regular "Night Music" band in 1989 when this was taped.

  • "Mmmmm, welcome to jazz club, great"

  • Well..accually he's one of my high favorites..one of the truest, because of his capabilities...just GET IT RIGHT..

  • Still highly acceptable thOUGH

  • Was and IS afraid of his own beutey..

  • GOD..your blocking my subconscious...free be mei L like writting your autograph as a poem and biggerz

  • Wow looks like I have a twin! Conga player.

  • keep an eye on your head

  • Miles's left Eye..and the other stuck together with yellow slimey gunky stuff

  • I've always loved Pharoah Sanders. I went 3 nights in a row to hear him when he played in San Francisco a couple of years. I couldn't get enough. Every night different. Every night intense. His music is so spiritual it's insane! What a blessing he is to us troubled mortals.

  • flash back flash!

  • Now thats fucking great elevator music

  • CHRIFA MY LOVE !!!

  • man Hiram was so damn cool. I miss him.

  • I used to listen to the Pharoah while I was working on papers in College. I love this man, truly and without pretension. He speaks to the piece of our beings that isn't polluted by . . . ." Amen.

  • i have malmute called Thembi

  • I LOVE PHAROAH SANDERS !!!!

  • Jazz...

  • pharaoh sanders, beautiful music.

  • The best saxophone players are the old school ones today players are not as good

    From the ones from yesteryear

  • I MISS NIGHT MUSIC, 1 GOOD TV SHOW

  • Pharoah has an awesome sound

  • I grew up on listening to Jazz saxophonist, I am a saxoponist myself. The young cats today are not able to play traditionally as well as David Sanborn who is for the most part known in the Smooth Jazz world. I have caught him a few times on set and he is a player. Pharoh Sanders is one of the last links to the real shit as well as Sonny Rollins.go do your home work young boys I hope I see you on the bad stand on a song with changes......until then

  • thanks sc !!! ye, i like it !

  • david sandborn is one of the corniest dudes but holy crap can he play!

  • Great Duo on this track. I had the privilege of seeing David Sandborn in Northern Italy back in the mid-1980s and he was fantastic. The combination of both Pharoah Sanders and he are a welcome to the ears. It's too bad you don't get to hear the entire final set to this tune. Great music!

  • I loved that show.

  • KMD! R.I.P SUBROC!

  • pharoah is a brilliant blessed soul

  • satan ra

  • can anyone answer my question?

  • MAN, Don Alias really OWNED every percussive instrument he ever touched. That guy is often over looked, he is so talented.

  • I also want to say that I LOVE Pharoah Sanders. This tune is one of my favorites but my all time favorite is "The Creator Has A Master Plan" with Leon Thomas' vocals. That is Absolutely Sublime!!

  • Thought I recognized Hiram Bullock in there...

  • it lacks energy

  • @aaronvespro It has plenty of energy, and just what is befitting for the tender sweet groove here.

  • @ejguyton This is jazz, kid. Jazz and hip-hop have nothing to do with each other. Why are you even discussing hip-hop in the context of REAL art?

  • @grantyells, google "The Dozens: Hip-Hope Meets Jazz". From that article-"For well over forty years, jazz music and hip-hop music have flirted with each other on numerous occasions. When jazz artists began to experiment with sounds beyond free jazz and the avant-garde, they unknowingly helped plant one of the important seeds for hip-hop music. Hip-hop artists returned the favor in the 1980s, sampling some of the most respected music in the jazz catalogue."...There's more with a list of examples.

  • @grantyells for real! thats like discussing graffiti in a picasso showroom...........GET THAT CRAP OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!

  • Where has all the good black music gone? so sick of seing those uneducated rappers and the utter nonsense they rap

  • @umkid I don't think you are looking at the right rappers

  • Comment removed

  • @ejguyton Enlighten me than, apart from imortal technique im stuck, the only ones that get to the top nowadays are the uneducated fools, FACT

  • @umkid I don't know. You'll have to listen to explore and find what you like.

Some of the artists that got me into hip-hop: Pharoahe Monch, J Dilla, Outkast, Madlib, GZA (and the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan).

  • Comment removed

  • @ejguyton Your obviously a little stupid because you certainly wouldn't say that wu tang clan was educated, ill give you Andre3000 one half of outcast, so please don;t patronise me your a kid that hasn't learnt to shave yet and dont know shit about hip hop, (ps) dont forget your apple for your teacher next time your in high school

  • @umkid Why you so upset???

Sorry if I get my kicks from listening to music and NOT picking fights with people on youtube.

ps. You're trying to call me a kid and you can't even write a grammatically correct sentence???

  • i thought that was nelson rangell on alto. why would sanborn change his suit to play?

  • David Sanborn has the weirdest embouchure I have ever seen...

  • WOW !!!!!!!!! that´s best

  • What Jazz style/genre would you call this?

  • Why don't more people demand shows like this?

  • Please , im begging for a dvd with all the episodes from the show. Damn , i was born to late man... Its like , they dont realize how much it would mean to me and many other musicians. Its freakin eldorado man , let it out for the public once again! I demand justice!

  • Too much Dave, and NOT enough Pharaoh !!!

  • My Complaint too much Dave, and NOT enough of .....PHARAOH !!!!!

  • Pharoah , Sanborn , Hiram Bullock on guitar..Omar Hakim on drums......who can help me out. beautiful song. Goo Pharoah

  • .... got me started & now i can't stop reflecting back & savoring the sounds of my younger years as my beard is as white as Pharoah's ...whose sounds still raise my spirits high into the blue skies of day and darker blues of night ..

  • Can anybody explain me why he had a white beard in 1969 while he was 29?

  • Thembi のライブやばい

  • Schwweeettt! This is such a phenomenal album, THEMBI(1971. mca/impulse) and song. It appears we have Don Alias on percussion, which means we are in good hands. Stellar. I always held Pharoah in high-esteem with the other greats, and he played amazingly with Coltrane, as well. "The creator has a master plan. Peace and happiness for every man. The creator has but one demand, peace and happiness, through all the land".

  • PRICELESS SOUND BY 2 GREAT SAX MASTERS!

  • love

  • @scmm you are so right Pharaoh was about to turn it up a notch or two!!!!!

  • smooooth

  • great peformance!

  • Some ear candy.......!

  • awesome play of sanborn!!!!!!; what a technique!!!

  • I think ...Sanborn played perfect on Thembi . Mr. Sanders no words he`s the MASTER thank you scmm42

  • typical david, kenny g and others will play with these brothers, go home work on the tune, go into study redo and make a millions, while the brothers are starving to get theire own show. welcome to america

  • hella sick beard

  • wow-Pharoah is on another plane, just gentle flowing inspiration in every note. Sanborn sounds strident next to him-but who wouldn't?

  • yo it's David Sanborn not Savid.

  • OK, I'm getting ready to grow a beard like that.

  • There's something so sympathetic between this groove and the human brain, that I cannot imagine anyone not digging the groove and the melody of this song. One Of The Best EVER!

  • Best not to estimate Sanborn

  • I did not know David Sanborn had it in him!

  • haha, i feel u... ive actually just watched a couple david sanborn vids... hes not that bad (shocking! right? haha)

  • Just like that hair....hahahahaha!

  • @fineyoungspecimen hahaha

  • I remember this show it on very late , it was very hip, to bad we Americans just did not get it

  • pretty good

  • the giants in motion

  • I have great memories of watching David Sanborn's program with my mom-my fellow night owl.

    RIP Mom

  • peace to you and your mum

  • Thanks & peace to you too.

  • @mikado415 I remember night owl too.

  • My only complaint about this video is the abrupt ending. This is special stuff. The sound quality is great and the groove is out of this world. Pharoah is, well...there are no words. And here Pharoah brings out the absolute best in Sanborn...and Sanborn is damn good. I want more...I would absolutely love about 5 more minutes of this groove. Anyone out there got it?

  • BTW, can anyone tell me if there is any way to download this onto an ipod? I have to say this is my #1 favorite youtube video. I want to take this one with me on my runs. Only way to do that is to download it onto my ipod. I'm not much of a techy, so any help in this regard would be most appreciated.

  • go search google for youtube mp3 converter. convert video and put mp3 into itunes

  • @pefesta Unfortunately, there is no more to this video. This was the end of the show and they didn't broadcast any more.

  • I saw this brother live in DC. One of the last Titans of the Advant Garde

  • @scmm42

A 6:03 version of the show without credits ending ;)

  • @pefesta

I cant believe the rest ended up on the cutting room floor and thereafter in the refuse. What a sad story.

  • @pefesta its greatness is measured by its ephermeral nature

  • Give Sanborn a break, folks. He's never been a favorite of mine, and yes, he over-played, took off all his clothes, illustrated all the technique he could muster (probably learned in some jazz school), but look who he was on the front line with! How many instrumentalists can stand next to and play with the great Pharoah and compliment his music? I can't think of very many.

  • He's not very artistic is he? He's got good technical ability and Rhythm but he's not much of a mood setter, which is what I think the best quality of music is, setting a state of mind which Pharoah is absolutely great at.

  • @ChadizzleFoshizzle no not artistic at all you gotta be fukin kiddin me

  • @lasmach Oh Sanborn rocks, don't get me wrong there, It was just more technique brilliance then it was artistic gold, that's all I'm saying.

  • I"m named after this song :)

  • its amazing how much more pharoah can say with so many less notes than sanborn-he's a true genius

  • they both play different saxes. i think the're beautiful together

  • david needed validation. that is why he get involved.

pharoah graced him with his presence.

  • great - love Pharaoh S.

  • wow.

  • planant

  • yeah, love this man, its all about that night music. he can blow ovdr anything... i always wished they had someone a little hipper than sanborn, hes a little mean... still bitchin tho!

  • Love Pharoah, one my main inspirations, love this tune, and yes, love this collaboration.....

  • You don't even need to listen to this. David Sanborn and his horrible band kill this song. Pharoah Sanders' Thembi is wonderful piece that should be listened to off the album Thembi, not here. The guitar player is especially awful on this rendition.

  • While I agree that David Sanborn is fucking tripe, I think he did okay on this. I also think that the guitarist wasn't at all obtrusive. It's okay. It's not the best rendition of the piece. But it's not ruined.

  • why does david sanborn have to get involved? I like him, especially with paul butterfield dont get me wrong but.

  • Well, he was the host and did play with most of his guests. It's great seeing Pharoah at anytime, anywhere.

  • beautiful rendition. Long time since I heard this song.

  • As always, Pharaoh Sanders is quite unbelievable along with his group. I too have enjoyed the albumn "The Creator Has A Master Plan!

  • Ultima Cool.

  • I REMAIN excited to see THE GREAT ONE'S concert in person last night at Yoshi's-San Francisco(6/25/09),"AND" have him to autograph my 1969 Karma Album of his, remember,"THE CREATOR HAS A MASTER PLAN....?.......and allow me to take a photo with him. I am favored definately by ELEDUMARE,AYANGALU,and the ORISHA!!!!!!

  • We are so excited to have Pharoah Saunders perform live on the Open Air Stage at the Big Chill festival :)

  • Damn, some parts sound like Resolution from A Love Supreme, the Pharoah is so goood.

  • smooth jazz ? you mofos do not no a damm thing about music i apologize for that . forgive me but please learn about the music, coltrane, miles, sonny, cannonball, zawinal, shorter, Mr. Parker,etc..............

  • i do know a damn thing. ive taken a whole semester on this.

  • Why? Sanborn killed it

  • i love pharoah . he has a lot of spirit in his music . i feel the presence of the all Mighty when i hear his music.

  • im not crazy about the guitarist but pharoah sanders has a quality that is hard to describe and that is totally unique to him. He might me the most expressive player ive ever heard and he sounds great here. I dont know who the altoist is but hes good too. Sometimes when pharoah does stuff like this its on the verge of smooth jazz but the rawness of his tone sort of neutralizes it.

  • You can find young David Sanborn besides Dizzy G, But he is great in himself and a great composer

  • I wish there were more Pharoah Sanders videos on youtube....he is an exceptional human being

  • I saw Pharoah Sanders last night live. Even after all this time he is AMAZING a jazz great for sure!

  • I saw Pharoah At the Beacon in NY one of best.

  • Thank you for posting this. I remember seeing this when it originally aired.

  • it's so progresive pharoah.... like Miles in his times

  • Noma Themba!

  • Sandborn's Smooth jazz vibrato and articulation really clashes here... Sanders should have played alone

  • Agreed!

  • I don't know, I think it makes a neat effect.

  • I don't know.. it's just if they both are not doing it it's really annoying to me. If there was an alto player who was just playing the melody while understanding his position of playing under Sander's powerful sound. Especially on the out head... it's just in poor taste.

  • Pharoah Is God in Music

A real high spirtual powerful and BEAUTY

    MUSIC like Coltrane

He`s the Best I mean THE BEST ever and ever and forever Amen

  • i love this album too. i like the last track with all the yelling and african rythms

  • Great song. One of my favorite jazz albums of all time is thembi. I love it.

  • Mamma mia, da brividi, Pharoah, che tu possa vivere ancora a lungo e farci emozionare cosi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very good.

    Hafeez

  • this was the first song i ever heard as ive been told by my pops.

    :D

  • Cooooooooooooooooooooooooool!

  • for sure great musicians, but i hate in generally how sanborn looks when he plays. it looks stupid man

  • its because one of his arms is shorter than the other one so he has to change the neckstrap height to really high so his hand can reach and fit around the horn

  • ok thanks, i didnt know that

  • close your eyes and just listen!!

  • ive never really listened to this kind of music but hes really good

  • Thembi good players. Nice Sanborn solo. Pretty sure the git player is Hiram Bullock.

  • Nice performance! Pharoah Sanders and David Sandborn both take elegant solos.

I caught Pharoah live at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach in 1980. He played three long sets. What a rich fat sound he gets out of his tenor.

(Guitar player here is indeed the late great Hiram Bullock.)

  • I didn't know that Hiram had died until I read this. I am deeply saddened to hear this. He was a genius. May he rest in peace.

  • what year did hiram bullock pass away he played on a lot of david's albums

  • July, 2008.

  • Pharoah is king!

  • Gorgeous... Pharaoh's always been the dude supreme.

BTW it's pronounced "Tembi"... no big deal but nice to get it right, especially if you're hosting god's tenor player :)

  • did u see the dude's guitar??? looks like it has been through a living hell

  • Smooth and sinuous and passionate.

  • Wow, that was sweet to say the least. Thanks man. Ooh, my first post on youtube ever and it happens to be about Pharoah Cool. This is one of his tamer ones. Thanks again for posting this up, got it downloaded.

  • That was awesome, Pharoah Sanders is great and so is Sanbord. The end is out this world, really!

  • Night Music - the best music tv show EVER!

  • AMEN!!

  • Ooooohhh, so sweet like that first icee in the endless summertime running down your chin as an innocent child.

  • You're god !

  • Super

  • Suoer

  • IMO Sanborn showed of a little bit too much compared to pharoah's playing even though it was the end of the show

  • I totally agree.

  • Very spiritual. Pharoah is a master musician! David Sanborn is also a great player! Thanks for posting. This song has been in my head at times of distress and it never fails to bring calm.

  • anyone who enjoys this and wants longer solos.... I reccommend Summun Bukmun Umunyun, a 1971 masterpeice predicated on the holy Quaran, 2, 25;00 pieces.. and Cecil McBee on bass. truly inspirational
