I used to work the National Captioning Institute. This is a transmission error - when tv reception is bad, the captions will sometimes come across garbled. Letters are always dropped in pairs - either two letters, side-by-side, or a letter and a space, side-by-side. What's left is sometimes a combination of two words, or in this case, a new word made by deleting two characters from the orginal word. ANIMALS - take away two letters IM, leaves ANALS
I work in closed captioning (not for Vitac). This is a simple encoding error. Once the caption file leaves the captioning company, it gets encoded by the network for broadcast. If anything goes wrong during that step, this is exactly what you get -- many words with letters transposed, partial words, etc. Another thing captioning companies always get blamed for is audio changed in post-production AFTER the show has been captioned. Bad captioning isn't always the fault of the caption editor. :)
I honestly think they were just trying to play up the diction and dialect of the characters... Since they're deep Southerners... Still makes it stupid, but I would assume that would be it.
Nah...just look at how the rest of the dialogue was captioned. Whomever was doing the job that night, well, let's just say English was definitely NOT their native tongue.
@desktorp just type 'the feuding pyles' in the search box to see the entire episode. I'll just add that no one was murdered and the "don't ask, don't tell" policy may have been pioneered via this episode : )
I've seen lots of captions where words and parts of words get left out. I've seen others where the caption stutters, so while the character's saying "Let's get out of here" the caption reads "Let''s gouttttt f rerererererere".
Funniest one ever was on Xena when they discovered a beauty contestant was actually a man. Caption had the contestant pleading "I'm not ready to go pubic with this".
Hey this isn't nothing i had a tv that would mess up the captions all the time and read them weird maybe it was just the tv i had one that would do this with any show, you couldn't read it right.
loved anals LOLOLOL That was wierd!!!!! i remember they did a public service announcement on The Office, and it was during a crying scene, so it looked CREEPY xD
This happens often on analog sources when the signal isn't perfect- letters get dropped, resulting in stuff like that. Don't know how it works with digital TV- annoying MeTV logo there BTW- they should just put the captions directly on the picture while they're at it.
Gomer Pyle was the first movie about The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Jesus loves him though.

You'd think being able to spell would be a prerequisite to do the closed captioning.

Often times fouled up captions on Cable TV is due to signal corruption. You will see a lot of incomplete words, missing lines, and garbled text.

Even those who do the closed caption do not know the difference between lose and loose, you're and your, and it's and its.

Captioning tv shows would be a dastardly boring job. Im not surprised that people would deliberately screw up the scripts just for a laugh.
