i think ireland were the team of that championship. they beat england , the russians got out of jail with a draw against them cause they had one atack and scored. the dutch got very fortunate with there goal against them.. i would say appart from the dutch the irish lit up that championship.

@joelovesclaire2008 : They WEREN'T the Russians. They were the USSR. PLayers made up of different republics. In fact they were mainly Ukrainians when Lobanovsky took over in 1986, but also Belarus, Russia and 1 or 2 others.

It was, they played at Euro 88, it was 1-1.

I know they played. My earliest memories are from Italia 90 when I was 8. Who deserved to win the clash in 88 between West Geramny and Italy in your opinion? Was a draw a fair result?

Difficult to say. The German national team have never beaten Italy in a competitive game. I would say the Italians edged it. It was close, but I think the German goal was fortunate, as Brehme scored from a free kick that never was. It really should have been 1-0to Italy. Overall the Netherlands deserved to win it. They were the best in 88.

The Italian had, and still do, a bad record against Russian teams particularly in the Soviet era. But yes, they were favourites along with the Germans. But the USSR had beaten Holland and thrashed England, so it was not a "uber" shock.

I still think the Dutch would have won. Although I am basing that on the history between the two; the Dutch have the better record.
