It's ridiculous that myki still glitches up sometimes even after costing so much and being this late... the scanner takes about 2-3 seconds to read which is enough to hold up a line..and it does not help when there are defunct scanners at Melbourne Central during peak hours.

Perth has five and a half train lines, the rest of the system are buses. The trains are good, but the buses are hopeless.

As for services connecting? Well, obviously somebody must believe in the tooth fairy.

Highly visible security guards?Not on every train, however on most after 7:30 pm and even they stay away from the noisy drunk agro passengers.

Perth trains run well because there are only a few lines & hardly any passengers. The ticket system might be good but don't believe the hype about the rest of it. See for yourself the empty trains hurting down the middle of a busy freeway.

That's quite true, but there are thousands of larger cities which have had larger networks and CBDless style metro services operating way better than Melbourne ever will. And for them, Smartcards came in several years ago.

If other cities CAN do it, why can't we? We can't run a train system right, trams are always late, buses are unreliable and you can't even pay for your transport properly.

Also, I think it is a very pertinent point made about Perth doing their system for $35 Mil versus $1 Bil for Melbourne.

Melbourne should have just bought an off the shelf system like what they did in Perth, Brisbane and Hobart.

Myki is rubbish. The government has spent nearly 1 billion dollars on a system which is late and still doesn't work. They now reckon that people that use Myki in regional areas are getting ripped off. We should have just copied Perth's SmartRider system, or stick with our Metcard system. I don't see a problem with Metcard.
