I see a fundamental flaw in your logic. You, like the animal testers, are deciding that one form of life is more valuable than another and therefore makes the other expendable. It does not. All life is equally precious and when you deceive yourself into believing you have the clairvoyance to make that decision you display the same arrogance as the animal testers. PETA has been criticized but sometimes you have to be extreme in order to make change happen. I am a member of PETA and although i am against some of the violent things that some members do, i whole heartedly support PETA and i am a proud member. I love animals and i am happy that an organization like PETA is making a big difference for animals.

it's called the LD50 test. you feed a substance to 50 animals and increase the dose until 50% die. that's known as the lethal dose hence the name. we deserve to be wiped out like the dinosaurs before we destroy everything!
correction, sometimes the substance is fed to more than 50 animals, 200+. 50 signifies how many must die before the lethal dose is determined. they will do these tests on different species too.
Yeah, I did some research on the LD50 test before. As far as I know, it's not done anymore in certain parts of Europe, and USA is not supposed to do it, but Covance, the drug development company, has conducted LD50 tests on rabbits, injecting them with a herbicide that can kill people, and resulted in the rabbits bleeding from their orifices, dying slow painful deaths.

I guess the best answer I can give is that benefits outweigh the risk. What happens if the government executes a criminal and it turns out the guy is innocent? It happened before, but the benefits apparently outweigh the risk. We put a murderer to death, and everyone feels pretty good about it. That feeling of revenge apparently outweighs the risk of killing an innocent man, so we continue to do it.
There is no really easy way to deal with the situation. In the case of animal testing, all I know is that the animal being tortured and killed in the name of science is always innocent of any crime. As for someone who eats meat, again that would fall into my point about someone who condemns the Nazi Human Experimentations, but would accept treatment for hypothermia even though those techniques were developed by the Nazis.
