the year 2012 comes from the ancient civilization of the mayan people. maybe aztec, but anyways there are things marked on the calendar that predicted stuff like WW1 and the fall of the twin towers. it doesn't really say twin towers, but the date 9/11/01 was marked with a catastrophic event. so the predictions supposedly came true. the big deal is that the calendar only goes up until 2012.  since it just ends suddenly, people think its the end of the world in that year because it just stops.

Well, it's a version of "Winter: Lux Aeterna" from the film "Requiem for a Dream." It could be the one directly from the soundtrack or a remix (as they are legion). It's hard to tell for me because I've got a number of versions of this song and I'm not sure which, if any, are lifted from the soundtrack itself.
