A funny thing which many don't know is this: There are enough die hard linux gurus (they usually use the "Slackware" distro, and when they see these KDE / Gnome desktop effects really freak out. :)
@hrbear haha I use Slackware yes, however many Linux gurus also use Arch and LFS, idk, I used to HATE KDE and was kind of ok with Gnome, but now I've been lately getting used to KDE, I used to use Windowmaker and Fluxbox but with as much computer power is available now I figured I might as well have some nice styles and use my resources a little, even with all the special effects and all the software I run the system uses less than half the resources Windows 7 ultimate uses on mine.
@toodietoodieomg There is a theme you can get for the dock that looks a lot more akin to the OS X dock. I have it on mine but my computer is so shitty I had to take it off. It used too much RAM. That in combination with compiz did not go over well with my system. 512 RAM 1.6GHz Processor and ATI Mobile GPU
I think that GNU did a lot to improve that state of UNIX programs (removed arbitary limitations and offered more features and usability) in the 90:s. KDE 4 looks very promising and Gnome is moving forward in a steady pace.
I'm not an Apple fanboy, I just like good solutions combined design with nice technology and great user interfaces.
Exposé on the other hand let´s you easily select any window without having to cycle through them. That´s how Apple uses techology - to make the life easier for the user, not by offering something fancy that is equally useful to what was there in the first place or something all pointless like the fishes in the cube.
Very fancy, but the thing about OS X that everyone celebrating the effects of Compiz Fusion misses is that the effects in OSX are there because they bring useful assistance. The magnifaction of the icons in the dock makes it easier to click the button of choice, the lamp effect makes it easier to follow where windows appear/disappear and exposé make it easier to overview all windows.
It is useful for compartmentalizing tasks and programs. I run Windows. Aero Peek, Shake and 3D Flip do not compare when it comes to workspace management. Most people hop on Ubuntu because it might as well be the tech world equivalent of a counter-culture (sorry Mac kids, you are just too trendy to be rebels). I actually like Ubuntu (or any distro really) because I do find that it offers an improvement in work efficiency. At least until there is a Windows version of Compiz.
@TheNativeDialect True, I think compiz has a lot of cool features, don't get me wrong, just not a fan of window effects, all my window effects are off because I like things popping up instantly without any fuzz. The feature I most use is the grid, I love it. For the rest I'm really just using compiz because it delivers better graphics, better performance, and the ability to use VSync, refresh rates, etc.
The main reason why I use Ubuntu is that it delivers anything a tech geek wishes.
The razzle dazzle really is over rated. I mean, it is great to show off once, but it is really the "shiny" aspect more than anything too practical. Sort of like the water effect or writing in fire with the mouse. They look nice, but they serve no real purpose. It is a shame that most Ubuntu videos are fixated on using such effects as a high point for why Ubuntu (or any *nix distro) is more worth while than Windows.
@TheNativeDialect I agree, it's also the main reason with non tech people even tried Ubuntu and switched back to windows in a week, because they are not smart enough to install a graphics driver and enable all those effects O_o. I do think it's still going to take years till the actual everyday teenagers are going to use Ubuntu as their desktop os. But imagine if it was possible to run Windows Live Messenger natively but also all the adobe software. I am SURE we would have a lot more users now.
I prefer Pidgin to the native chat clients that it emulates. Computer culture has really shifted in the last decade. I remember a time when chat was primarily carried out through mIRC. People didn't bother with all of these piracy sites. You just found connections to FTP servers. The modern PC user is disconnected from the culture and the technology. As Ubuntu becomes more mainstream, I am sure there will be more adopters of Ubuntu and GNU/Linux in general.
@TheNativeDialect I do prefer pidgin or empathy as well, but some people don't like chance, they are used to something else. A lot of users are indeed disconnected from technology, most haven't even heard about Ubuntu, let alone linux. Ubuntu 10.04 is a BIG step forward, usually LTS releases just fix bugs and don't mind changes a lot, but canonical decided to give us some modern looking theme and give us the opportunity to connect to twitter, facebook, etc from the desktop, users will like this
It is a huge step forward. Ubuntu is the GNU/Linux communities best hope for mainstream acceptance as an alternative OS. Modernizing the aesthetic (which admittedly, looks like it is an OS Circa 1998) will help make GNU/Linux more competitive. People care about ease of use and appearance, more so than they care about functionality.
@aYummyPie Neither do mine, most of them don't for sure. I'm pretty sure they all think it's some kind of XP theme when I send print screens since they never ask :D
@TheNativeDialect : uhm ... each and every OS served their own purpose. Microsoft created an evolution with plug and play idea (first appear in XP) so that even a dinosaur can online and chat sex with his/her mate :) . It took a few years for other OS to catch up and at least Ubuntu answer the call which provided an OS which can create a friendly environment for the user not as easy as Window yet but acceptable and for $0. you take the bite you pay the price ... live is always a trade off
@legendaryfallen Microsoft created the plug and play idea??? lol nooo they created a system that can run on many different PCs so anyone could produce the computers and simply pay Microsoft a royalty, Apple created the plug and play idea and that's very apparent with the first Mac's that were an all in one kind of like the iMac and Apple has always had plug and play since, now all of the system's have become better over time and now plug and play is almost a default.
I know what you're trying to imply but either way a dock is a dock if it works with all its fancy gadgets then it has done its job. I'm not the type to be flashy but when I get bored I modify things hence why so many people that are true Linux users end up with this modified Desktop with unnecessary animations and stuff. Cause Linux is able to take something and integrate in to its own system many people are showing off saying "OMGZ Linux > the rest" which is just plain stupid.

Compare Flip 3D to Exposé, the first one is just a fancy TAB + ALT that let´s you cycle through wndows.

I think Ubuntu has still some time in order for us to see the same user friendly interface as Mac or Windows but I think we will get there.

I don't get what a paper plane effect or swimming fishes inside the compiz cube does to improve to improve and simplify your workflow.

Then again.. what does the cube do to improve that workflow? I prefer the normal desktop wall =/
