This is amazing and beautiful - and also helpful - got taught this a couple of weeks ago and still confused in some areas - thanks for making it less confusing
@CrazyGirlz555 Bad lucky! How did you do? I was practicing the first half at training and I was informed that it's in my grading which is this Saturday!! I had no idea and have only been doing Basai Dai, such a poor student...Oss!
In my school, (Shito-ryu), Kanku Dai is "Koso Kun Dai," and basically replaces the back stances (the leaning back stance) with the cat stance, and the side kicks with the front kicks.
But wait, to the person below, I thought Tekki Shodan/Naihanchin Shodan was older.
It's one of my favorite Kata ( beside Heian Godan and Chinte) ... I can't perform it (same with Chinte- I'm just yellow belt) but I love watching it and trying to learn... it's absolutely outstanding
Can I just ask something here? I greatly respect Kanazawa Shihan but doesn't he make a mistake with the keages. First keage half step, last keage no step is the way of most other instructors but Kanazawa does the opposite.
I am completing my Blackbelt in 2 weeks, but am handicapped from training until then, does anyone know of a good website/video that goes through Kanku Dai?
funakoshi changed a lot of the okinawan katas when he went to japan. that's why they're similar but different. so it's not a knock off, but an interpretation.
Damm finaly you reply.... i was just joking to see if any idiot would reply. However, if you are a Shotokon-ist with a 3rd dan or above you shihan or hanshi would recomend you to study the shorin-ryu system. Vice versa... well no offense ok.. but please if you have learn all the kata in shotokhan please leasrn the shorinryu kata.. that will help you judge alot of other kata's... Except for Tae Kwon Do..... TKD just suck
He didn't change the katas he only changed the name of the katas, the techniques are still the same, maybe slightly changed nowadays for more efficient moves and applications.
I wouldn't really say they're totally the same aside from interpretation... More like Shotokan kata are uncompressed counterparts to Shorin katas that are somewhat compressed.
ByakuyaTenshii posted an application I use (similar to the opening of Nidan for me as well)
Also one other application could be a start with a "flinch reaction" so maybe a attack to the eyes, throat or head in general is countered by a raising of the hands, then followed by moving the opponents hand out of the way and then finish with the haiwain uke as a strike to either side of the neck (we practise both in the kata) - The flinch reaction is something Sensei Abernethy first showed me,
everyone keeps saying that some fo his movements are wrong but in all actuality, they are very correct, not much has changed since it was first created. some of the moves may have been changed, depending on your style, to make it easier to use in kombat, but the original is always best when honing techniques.
I'm a 1st dan and I'm trying to really break down this kata could anyone give some advice on really making the last double front kicks at the end look nice? It would be much appreciated =)
just bring the first knee up(dont kick out) but concentrate on the second kick.when u can do this, turn the knee raise into a mae geri and add the second one as practised..voila,Im sure u will soon be looking good.
my dad is a 1st dan and he is learing this kata for his 2nd dan and the kata is a bit different to the one in the video, also my dad trained with Kanazawa in 2006 even though he teaches a differnt style or whatever
I got to train with him in shotokan week! He is incredibly dynamic in his moves and he teaches very well. Yay! i have finally got my first dan! I got to get judged by him. He is now 77!
you also have to remember when kanazawa was in his prime he used to train with all the head senseis that we could only dream about training with... but this video was taken probly like 50 years ago when they did not know alot about how powerfull the body could be when put in the right posistions... so he is doing many things that we would classify as wrong.... but back then they are completly right.. he would be our valdesi 50 years ago
no no no i found out since we performed well and we didnt bug her .. she said shell take us through it .. and she bet me i cudnt memoerize the frist 25 moves... haha i proved everybody wrong i learnt it all ... mayb i dont know bunkai or th eright echinique i know the moves.... thats ok its 2nd dan kata in our style
i think my sensei is ... i dunno mental ... shes teaching me second kata saifa bassai dai kururunfa and kanku dai IM STILL WHITE BELT.. and yellow tip.. 9TH KYU!!! i do Go Kan Ryu nicee karate
Go Kan Ryu is a modified derivative from one or more of the 5 principle, originating Okinawan styles of Japanese karate: Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu and Shorin Ryu. Your instructor is bypassing the disciplinarian tediousness of the basic Taikyoku and Heian katas and teaching the advanced BassaiDai and KankuDai katas, in order to avoid you getting impatient or bored and dropping out of his school.
i did go kan ryu years ago and the club changed over the years to kenshu kai - shenshu kai, some other one now its genshi ryoku lol im a 7th kyu ho (yellow belt orange tip) its good to know them katas now cuz when do need to learn them you will be good at them, i know 1st kata 2nd kata saifa bassa dai and seuinshin but i dont know empi yet lol
it's cool that you're so enthusiastic about your sensei's technique, but right now you're showing a lot of disrespect for someone who's dedicated his life to your art and has been an integral part of spreading it throughout the world..somehow i don't think your sensei would approve of that.
@jippzmcghee What on EARTH are you talking about? Where's the disrespect in a video on Youtube? There's absolutely nothing here that disrespects anyone.
@wolfbane135 Haha, yeh, the only reason I knew what jippzmcghee was talking about is because I watched this video for the first time a few months ago and there were a lot of hate comments.
5 stars but my kanku dai looks waaaaaaaaay better than this, at least till I wake up and do it in this world rather than that of my dreams. sigh... Oh well, as long as we're better than a day, week, month or year(s) ago that's all that counts. Comparing yourself of today with yourself when you began training is the best way of marking progress.
There is no such thing as a perfect performance because everyone has their own style! He obviously didn't put all his strength in every move but the rhythm and the posistions were as 'exact' as they could be. I've seen a lot of shotokan karateka going over board with speed and power while doing half-ass stances (or ridiculously low ones) and imprecise had movements!
If you look at all his videos he did all the katas in the same setting, hes bound to get tired. I bet kankudai was last and hes going "oh shit another one"...jk jk
I have tremendous respect for Kanazawa sensei, but he does look winded and weaker than usual (compare this to empi)
what have you ever saw him training ???? look kanazawa and my 7th dan sensei are friends to this day and , though i never had the chance to see him, but from what i heard . in the training he is totally a dfifferent man , it's like he is a 20 year old stuck in the body of an 80 year old ! he's a true legend and master
Mushashi warns against being so preoccupied with one's position and status that you cannot see both strengths and weaknesses. No master is perfect, neither am I, and the persuit of karate is a continuous evolution
BTW, I there is a post of Zempo Shimabukuru demonstrating another version of Kusanku (Kanku).
I have great respect for Kanazawa Sensei, but I am not impressed by this performance of Kanku Dai. I do know the difference between aesthetics and true karate, but this performance is far from flawless.
Certain principles seem to be missing. I do not see what the chinese refer to as fa jing or the okinawans refer to as gimbaku. Power is generated but not expressed, and often the power generated is transferred to the floor instead of the "opponent."
I rememeber first being taught this by Ochiai Sensei. I thought that I would never get through it, but I did, and afterwards this became my tournamnet kata.
I can not believe some of the ignorant comments here. Kancho Kanazawa foot movement and technique is excellent.Have you seen his body, It's all pure muscle. That comes with strength.Milkajerk obviously has a disliek for Kancho with his sick heart and soul.Don't forget my friends Kancho is the highest rated Shotokan Instructor in the world and has the respect from all JKA instructors.
I must agree i have been practising Kanku dai for the past year and a half but i am not nowhere close to kanazawa sensei, i must say that in shotokan karate it should look just like kanazawa is doing the kata, it is very impressive, i can see that he had trained many years, kanku dai is one of my favorite because of the moves and all, it is a long kata and needs much consentration and focus.
To all of you who think that you can do kanku dai better. You can't, trust me. You have to see kancho performing in person and then you would realize with what kind of power and precision he performs techniques. And when you stand in front of him you feel virtually powerless. He barely moves when you are attacking but you fall down like a tornado would strike you. And he knows for every move in kata what it is for. I had an opportunity to train with him. He is a true master.
I hestitate to say this, but I'm unimpressed with sensei kanazawa. I agree with several of the criticisms here. However, he deserves more respect then many have given. At times he lacks balance. Sometimes his hand technique look sloppy to me. He is a master and his understanding, through a lifetime of practise, is respectable even if his physical techniques are not perfect.
huceree I would say you are ignorant. More attention to detail and you'd notice how flawless the basic stances are as well as the timing of the actual movements. As far as grace/elegance goes... maybe you should go to a kung-fu school where many of the applications have no practical meaning or use.
Maybe I'm uneducated, but I've seen brown belts perform this kata with more grace/balance/energy. I would expect to be impressed with a 10th dan in shotokan. But I'm not at all. If my students looked like this, I would hesitatingly take them to be tested in front of a judging panel - knowing that I would take some flack for their lack of skill.
kanazawa sensei performs this kata as a dan grade.many movements completed in this kata are dan grade moves - ie the body movement reduces the need to complete the necessary 2 arm movements that novices / intermediate grades are required to perform for effective defence techniques.
kanazawa sensei performs this kata in the way of a dan grade many blocks are completed as one arm moves with limited movement.shifting of the body reduces the need to block.
I love Kanku Dai because it has so much of the other katas in it! Like, Heian Godan and Yondan. Only thin i don't like about it, is that it's complicated at first when you try and learn it. >_< lol, still stuck on the jump here.
i'm a 3rd kyu shotokan student, learning this kata. i'm just wondering, the two "punch, inside block" moves in the beginning, like in bassai dai, i have heard that it has been changed. like, in the video, he doesn't chamber the inside block under his arm, simply does it. i have been told to actually chamber it, unlike bassai dai. anyone know about this?
Actually he does chamber the block, but it comes from his shoulder, rather than his hip. You can hear it slapping his gi if you turn the volume up. Since every organisation has developed skotokan along slightly different lines since Funakoshi's day, I would check with your sensei exactly how you should be doing it.
Very nice. I'm trying to learn this myself right now and this is the best demonstration of it that I've seen so far. The slower second version will be especially helpful. Thanks for sharing.
very good!!! Kancho Kanazawa is great...

Anyone, who have a black belt can do kanku dai better. I can do better. He dont have a balance. And some moves are not controled.

huceree I would say you are ignorant.

I think you are right when you say you are uneducated, when it comes to this performance.
Flawless is a good description.

kanazawa sensei performs this kata as a dan grade.many movements completed in this kata are dan grade moves - ie the body movement reduces the need to complete the necessary 2 arm movements that novices / intermediate grades are required to perform for effective defence techniques.

kanazawa sensei performs this kata in the way of a dan grade many blocks are completed as one arm moves with limited movement.shifting of the body reduces the need to block.
