I absolutely agree with you! Thanks for this video :) Help me: I have light-medium skin tone with yellow undertone and my face is 2 shades darker than my body, I don't know really if it is just a suntan or my real face skin-tone so could you recommend me a skin whitening/lightening product which helps my face to get rid of acne scars and lighten it a little bit. My skin would look so much better when i have the same skin tone everywhere. Besides where can i buy those products (safely) ? B-)
I am caucasian and wish to be as pale as possible. I want it because that is what I find pretty; luminous milky skin. I think it just comes down to personal preference. Thanks for the video!
It's the opposite in America, being wealthy means being able to afford time and money for tanning or exercise(either true health or at least the illusion of health), it also makes your body look more sculpted. It's the same for african-americans and caucasians as well as the many different ethnic groups in America. With Twilight and the vampire theme being popular and the beautiful clear, luminous skin that is seen in Asian culture, it's becoming more popular to have a luminous glow, but i think
I think a lot of the skin whitening products in Asia are targeted to make skin more fair and therefore unnatural. This video explains the products very well and what they are meant for IN AN IDEAL WORLD! However, I believe in in Asia skin whitening products are meant to help those who are not born with fair skin, to be able to obtain the fair skin. The actual products themselves have chemicals to prevent melanin from going to the skin and therefore, helping obtain a more fair/pale complexion
I think your skin looks too white. You would look better with a tan. It would make your cheek bones stand out more and make your face look more contoured. I'm Chinese myself and I plan on using spray on tans.
I hate tans, im english and already pale but i would never want to be bronzed as being pale for me looks naturally beautiful! ^_^ There are soo many beautiful people with tanned skin but its natural and not fake!
Very well explained!!! Many westerner believes that the asian race's desire for fair skin is to be like them but really it's the standard of beauty in Asia. In Asia Fair= Gorgeous and in western country Tan=Gorgeous. Simple as that!
It's silly because when people tan, they aren't trying to become black >.< And vice versa (usually) I think the main problem here is wording and associations. It's tanning and whitening. Tanning does not = blackening, while whitening clearly has the word white in it and makes people feel as if the person using a whitening product is trying to become white if he/she is not already. But nevertheless, nice video! :3
I really like your video about whitening vs. tanning. I think it was brilliant speech explaining the concept of asian beauty standard vs. westerne one.
Not at all, the main point of this video is to approach this topic from a different point of view. Whereas it was often thought that everyone who uses skin whitening products wanted to be more "white" in ethnicity, I wanted to share other reasons and possibilities. I think the Western world needs to come to terms with itself and its' people about the terms "white" and "black". From an Asian perspective, I believe fair skin has little to do with race.
It is also a funny thing. My family all go on and on about how they love my Chinese husband's tan skin. But in China his family love my white skin. I have never had so many complements my skin before I went to China. I had never thought of my skin as beautiful because I only knew western beauty standards. I also self tanned so much before trying to look less white. I agree with what you are saying. Just try to have pretty clear skin no matter the color. Now I accepted and love my fair color!
I am Caucasian and I actually started using Asian whitening products after this summer because i worked outside a lot. I got a bad tan line on my chest and on my wrists. I felt so self conscious about it. I felt my skin looked so dirty and old. However, my skin began to become more even and look young and fair again after getting out of the sun and using the products.
I would be interested in skin whitening products to help even out with hyperpigmentation. On the other, as a darker/tanner Asian, I was stigmatized for having darker skin. Others asked me, "Why are you so dark?" or sometimes even worse...as if I had done something wrong. I agree that people should celebrate their natural skin tone. However, rather it be racial or social view, a person should not be seen as second class for being darker or lighter.
Agree. In india too fair and beautiful is considered perfect and again, for the same reasons. rich people who are considered higher in society or especially royalty are fair because they don't go out in the sun. people want to look wealthy and look like a higher social "class" so yeah. nothing to do with being Caucasian. I'm quite proud to be indian thank you... and if i wanted to be anything else it'd be egyptian... not white. :-P
@KofykatKashyap Actually middle easterners are considered "caucasian" and the Egyptians in my area look "white", they look SPanish or Italian, etc.
But when it comes to lightening or darkening, its personal preference...I dont tell anyone what to put on their skin because we all have different views of beauty. People do what THEY see as beautiful
I liked your video, very informative. I did a simiar video but i know way less about it. Anyway, I am starting here on yourtube...can you please subscribe to my channel?
Overall, each culture has their own perception of beauty based off of what they're used to and surrounded by. Naturally, with this being a modern age, customs as well as expectations change. Hence why tanning is becoming so popular is asian country(Gal style for example). What's important is that we drop the skin color deal- with still keeping it in perspective- and look at a female as a female and a person as a person. No matter what race you are, you can make yourself look good and beautiful.
And as for the Tyra episode, I've never actually seen it, but I have heard about it in a conversion a few other black girls and I( I'm black too) were having and they said that on the show these black girls were describing how light skinned black girls are on top( I'm light skinned too by the way). And I have to say I agree. Mind you, I DON'T agree with that statement deeming true, but I WILL say that that's how it actually is in the black "world" from experience.
... "A Girl We're fighting For" when Ling was singing, "I want her paler than the moon..." I asked myself and my dad, What is it with asian men( or asians) with wanting their women to look so pale and white? When he said "I don't know, but I know it means something, I just forgot" I decided to look it up and found out that it's just the asian perception of beauty. Nothing wrong with that, however when it gets to the point were it involves changing who you are, not good, not good at all.
Thank you so much for clearing this up. It seems as if in America, a lot of whites look at asians who I guess whiten their skin and think they're trying to look like them. Whether this is a misconception or just pride, it's WRONG. Every culture has it's own ideal of beauty and the "ideal woman." Now, if you naturally have pale, tan, or dark skin then whatever. It's just like you said Play up your natural look and look the best you can. I was just watching Mulan today and during the song....
I wish more people had your courage to speak on this topics. Everyone is so afraid they'll be labeled as self-hating. For those who want to lighten, they have to be prepared to explain to the world their own private reasons. Its definitely biased.
Wow! I appreciate you doing this video. My professional background is as a Massage and Spa Therapist in Resort and Destination Spas. I am working on an undergraduate degree in Management and Health Promotion. You've exposed me to a different POV. I tend to think of it as just a different variety of racism and your right about it being a difficult subject to talk about for Cacuasian women in the West IMO.
I definitely have hyperpigmentation problems...My skin is very fair but I hate seeing those darker spots! I wish I could magically remove them and make my skin tone even...
You have such gorgeous skin! I'm not going to say anything else as to not to creep you out. I don't like it when random Asian ladies tell me that I have "smooth milky skin"...
It's an old world asthetic in general prior mid-20 American concept fair skin is attractive also in theory because fair skinned is rarer by nature the medium tone ... Only n post really 20 century or industrial age would fair skin mean u are poor ( factory workers office) tan u have a job that affords u to tropical vacations to tan n prior that n curtain parts of world latter field workers the poor tanned cause of just that... But good topic n addressing it fairly I personally like fair skin wi
I haven't tried enough of them to really make a list of the best ones on the market. However, I do have a video called "Skin Whitening/Lightening products Summer2010 " if you are interested. You should be able to find it by searching through my videos on my channel :)
It wasn't that long ago in Europe paleness was considered a good thing- same as in Asia, you didn't have to go out in the fields and work because you had servants to do it for you, etc. Apparently this changed when Coco Chanel started tanning, but obviously socio-economic factors like increased leisure time and disposable income, and the advent of sun holidays all played a part
I disagree with changing your skin tone, but if we are going to do it, at least do it safely. Most tanning is worse than smoking and rated higher than rat poison on toxicity level, so thats the problem with that. Lots of whitening products are dangerouse as well. But there are safe alternatives. BTU MOST OF ALL LEARN TO LOVE YOUR SKIN THE WAY GOD MADE IT, YOU DONT HAVE TO BE PLEASED WITH IT, THE SOCIETY DOESNT HAVE TO BE PLEASED, BUT SOMEONE WILL BE! SOMEONE SPECIAL WILL LOVE YOU THE WAY U DONT!
I agree with what you said about whitening for East Asians and the African-American context is entirely different. But there's also the Indian context, where colonialism has led to the perception that being fair is associated with certain privileges in society and a hierarchy was made based on skin tone. I do think even though we don't support these unconscious ideas about hierarchy based on skin tone, we should still be mindful of these other contexts that DO contribute to this.
Absolutely! I can't speak for the Indian population but I can certainly see how colonization would have greatly affected social perceptions of beauty and hierarchy. I'd say this likely worked the same in other colonized areas of the world such as Mexico or S. America. This is certainly a multi-dimensional issue we have here.
I agree with you; it's perfectly okay whether a person want to tan themselves or whiten their skin. I don't find any harm in pursuing ones' ideal image of beauty if of course in the process he/she doesn't harm himself/herself, and it makes them happier to look at themselves in the mirror.
people don't realize that whitening is also a way for asians to even out the complexion because many of us get freckles when exposed to the sun. It's not about looking whiter, it's about a better complexion and getting that glow/luminosity/brightening. Fairness is not just an asian beauty concept. If you look at Snow White - "mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest..."
also forgot to mention that it seems like being pale is suddenly a bad thing! if you're not tan in the summer, you're considered "pasty" and gross. i just say... work with what you have. if you're pale, embrace your pale skin and make it the best it can be. if you're tan, do the same. i'd rather be pale than splotchy and orange from fake tan!
very interesting video. you are right, it seems like it's fine to talk about fake tan but lightening of the skin is a no no. i understand how people are afraid of the racial connotations of it, but i think it's fine to use if you're already pale and want to even out spots, scars, etc. i don't see anything wrong with that and i wish we could have more of those products in north america.

Honestly, I use Kojic soap. If you don't know what it is, it's basically a soap that exfoliates and therefore lightens the skin.
Don't get me wrong, I am naturally fair-skinned for a Southeast Asian.
My arms get more sun and tan more easily than the rest of my body, so they're rather dark compared to everything else.
To combat this issue, I use the soap.
I use it on my face as well, but not for whitening. I have acne and I occasionally have bad facial scarring.
YES, I WANT TO BE CAUCASIAN.
