@bkaye There would never be a Sinatra without Bing (His Idol) and Harry James and Tommy Dorsey who gave him a place in their bands. They all start somewhere.
Jolson, Darin; both incredibly great performers in their own styles. We rarely see anything of this caliber anymore. Not to mention the quality of the material, since there are few modern composers as great as Harry Warren.
Bobby at his incredible best. The dvd /cd combo "Bobby Darin, Aces back to back " , that this is on, is priceless. God bless and keep you close Bobby.
That's my point! I love Bobby Darin but Jolson's versions (from "Go Into Your Dance" and "The Jolson Story") of "About a Quarter to Nine" are the standards.
Well, yes we would be still talking about Darin, since his meteoric rise to the pinnacle of American music, did coalesce around his rock and roll early stardom, stage presence, and his astonishing swing tunes with Mack, Beyond The Sea, Some of Theses Days, Lazy River, Artificial Flowers, Clementine, to name only a few......he had some nice songs, and moderate hits in the late 60s until his death, but they remain footnotes in his still remarkable career. Darin is defined by his early work.
Part of any artists life includes evolving and changing. If Darin had done nothing but tuxedo swing tunes his entire career would we even be talking about him at this point? It is the extremes sometimes that make a life so much more interesting and challenging. Bobby was not afraid to show another side of himself and did not buckle to the critics. He had a genius intellect that implored him to explore different avenues. He remained a brilliant performer to the end.
Everytime I think of Bobby Darin it reminds Me of the time I was stationed in Frankfurt Germany 1958/1959 and walking up to the Kasern (barracks) entrance they had a large amplifier and it was playing Mack The Knife. Originally a German song from Three Penny Opera.
I guess I meant that he owned Sinatra doing Mack, and during his brief prime, between '59 and about '65. I don't pay much attention to Bobby after he poltiicized and thus contaminated his work, after about '67 until he died. Glad he came back to his real act before he got too sick...
I thoroughly agree about not enjoying Bobby's stuff later. On the other point too frankly. Frank did a version of Mack that I really liked, but Bobby did own that song absolutely. I thought you were saying he surpassed Frank in general. Frank's voice went away when he got older too. It just went. His timing was there, but that's it. I didn't read right either, he did prolly surpass him him in popularity during that time period. Along with Elvis.
As much as I love BD, he did not by any stretch own Sinatra. Sinatra was just from another era. Thank goodness for all the great entertainers that came along.
On this song ..#1 Jolson #2 Bobby #3 Dino Just saying for me on this song.

Bobby Darin was a good entertainer. In NO way was he ever in a class with SInatra. To suggest that is to be a musical idiot.

Probably one of the most talented and versatile performers to ever walk on to a stage and the guy i have always been inspired by !

You are absolutly right, mrswing. That key change is one of the strangest in music history. Bobby and Jolie both nailed it, to their credit.

The bridge section of this song is SO DAMN HARD with its weird key change... Respect to Bobby for nailing it!

This song, after all, was written specifically for Al Jolson.
