Saw him with Hot Tuna about 1970, they backed up Jefferson Airplane. Papa blew me away... I had no idea who he was, he came out by himself and proceeded to rock everyone's world in attendance. Tuna joined him a couple of tunes later and they were great. He later joined Grace and the Airplane and they were great.. then I heard they they were playing a club in the desert after the concert and they were there... I was there... unforgettable memories.
For anyone that ever got to see him, especially when he broke out his blue fiddle knows to lower your head in respect of this man. When he fired up that blue fiddle it literally would "smoke". A legend lost but never forgotten!
I had the pleasure of seeing Papa John play many times with Jefferson Starship & Hot Tuna. I always wondered how he ended up hanging out and sharing his talents with a bunch of hippies. One day while on his own tour for this album, I got my chance. Earlier during opening act, I had picked up the dinner tab for his wife and a couple of her friends and when Papa John finished his encore he headed backstage. I felt a tap on my shoulder and Mrs. Creach asked me if I would like to talk to him.
This guy was for the most part overlooked and underrated. He did get notice on Jefferson Starships "Red Octopus" album though. Awesome stuff Blair!!!! Thanks.
