  • This is obviously a cry for help.

  • Always loved the chorus on this

  • Great song, lame MTV video.

  • Thanks for posting this song. I couldn't find it anywhere, iTunes, etc. I remember this from the early MTV days. Love it, even the video.

  • pete recovered/recovering from severe alcoholism comes up with this interesting tidbit which I will always remember on mtv. the best video pick slide using a double neck gibson in a video and the cool bah bah bah interlude with puppets makes this the stuff of legend!!

  • INTERESTING SONG WRITING PETE!!!!!

  • this is almost as wierd as the singer's nose.

  • Yes this album was his personal record.....empty glass was primarily about his relationship with keith moon. This one was more about the who, wife and familly. You are so right about there will only be one Pete.....Today its all about quick money and no originality.

  • 0:13 GORGEOUS eyes! That would be something to sleep looking down from from the ceiling for, how can one man be so beautiful and talented? Pete if i ask nicely please marry me, i promise I'll share you with all the other ladies on here who love you!

  • PETE!!!!! REAL MUSIC REAL WRITING

A true original They dont make music like this any more......CAUSE THEY CANT!

There is only ONE PETE TOWNSHEND

  • Paul Simon's Hair.I Loved This Song back in the day..I Musta been Dumb.Thank God for tthe WHo.

  • I loved the videos on early MTV at this time. There was some thought put into the vids and they usually related to the lyrics. They weren't merely half-naked women gyrating around stripper poles, throwing money around, with gold chains thick as your wrist, and classic muscle cars bouncing the front ends, real original. I believe that's Simon Phillips on drums, nice beat. Townsend was always quite the tunesmith.

  • I love the part at 2:18 with the guitar. And why in the world does this video not have more views? Am I the only one that thinks this is an amazing, neglected song?

  • im sorry this song is ridiculous! I actually like pete townshend but this song is terrible. this song doesnt flow well and pete looks uncomfortable, This is my opinion, sorry if you dont like it, ill check out another Pete Townshend song and see what i think

  • Someone knows something about the accusations of pedophilia some time ago against the old Pete?

  • God he looks good in this

  • @est3inb3rg

    Damn good!!! :)

  • I always think of this song when I'm shaving in the morning.

  • For some reason this song just popped into my head. I haven't thought of it for years.

  • Pete is very efficient with his time. This video is a good example. He shot the video and got his morning ritual done at the same time including brushing his teeth, shaving, and after-shave! LOL!!

  • This video always tripped me out as a kid i love petes solo stuff!LONG LIVE ROCK

  • Always liked this song. Occurred to me a few years ago that Interpol could do a good cover of this.

  • Not to nitpick but I think this is 82

  • Adrien Brody, excellent choice!

  • Is there a better songwriter than Pete??

    NO!!!!

  • This video was really scaring for kids! My nephew cried all time when this clip came out!

  • I remeber this on heavy rotation on MTV MY Youth !!!! The first few years of MTV RULED !!!!

  • Me too!

  • Pete recorded most of Who By Numbers with that Flying V guitar.

  • He told Rolling Stone it was his favorite guitar to record with during the 80s and was given to him by his pal Rick Nielson from Cheap Trick.

Just some useless info from another fan....

  • Are you sure ?

  • I read it somewhere. I think in a guitar mag.

  • For the record, that's not the "SG" style Gibson doubleneck. That's actually the version of the doubleneck that Gibson made BEFORE they went with the SG style body. These were only made in the early 60's, and reportedly only a few dozen were made because they were only built on a custom order basis. They have hollow bodies. Steve Howe has a couple of these guitars.

  • Oh, Cool thanks for the info!!

  • I'm glad that he saved great songs like this for his solo albums; The Who would have been the wrong vehicle.

  • Pete you are so talented and so handsome. Love this video, and the song and so many others with and without the Who.

  • Excellent tune!

Yea, Nicholas Cage could play Townshend in a biopic.

I wondered if Townshend wasn't doing solo albums, Face Dances & Its Hard couldn't been better Who albums.

  • I could always picture Adrien Brody playing Townshend in a biopic, he has the nose for it :P

Anyways Pete Townshend, Feckin genius :D

  • I actually think Pete was more handsome at this period late 30's than Adrian but good actor !

  • Well, maybe some of those songs could have been on a Who record, but I've heard a lot of tunes got veto'd by Daltrey. Apparently, some of the songs Pete wanted to do for The Who were rejected by Daltrey as being "too gay" or something to that effect. And I think something like Slit Skirts wouldn't have worked as a Who song. That kidna had to be a Pete solo tune.

  • Tour Again, Pete. Of Course Florida 1st. Todd and Amy

  • Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend, you are a sexy beast.

  • holy crap pete without a shirt!! i think im gonna faint

  • 3:00 pm after school..my friends and I sit and stare.. gather quarters.. and off to the bowling alley to break the high score.. good times...

  • Pete is further proof that you don't necessarily have to be good looking in order to make it in show business!

  • except for he is

  • This is my joint favourite Pete Townshend solo song, along with Stardom in Acton.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I've been looking for this for years. I saw it dozens of times as a kid but could not remember the name of the song. All I remembered was Pete shaving and brushing his teeth with weird robots all around him.

  • Nicolas Cage - love child of a young Pete Townshend?

  • F&*$ing A++++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @1:35-Tom Servo??????

  • Well, he had to break into show business somewhere lol

  • That's not Servo. That's Crow T. Robot.

  • I would watch Mtv for hours and then play Atari Missle Command.

  • cheers to that..

  • My earliest memory of Mtv and I would hate when this came on. Also reminds me of my Blue Mongoose bicycle.

  • I'm surprised Pete didn't tear his face off shaving that quickly.

  • Thank you so much!!!! Back in the early '80s, I went to college with a girl who had an uncle who actually hung with The Who in the 60's. Yeah, it made me feel kind of cool LOL :-D

  • Thank you sooo much for sharing this. I have been trying to remember what song/video this was for a while now. This video used to freak me out (in a good way) when i was little...i used to love that wiggly greenish face @ 1:27. Lmao. PeacexXx!!!

  • OK, those singing robots are amusing me way more than they probably should.

And yay for shirtless Pete. :)

  • Haha..so random and weird yet awesome. Always wanted to see Pete shaving.

  • Good song by Pete-bizarre video..I think I could have done without the video and just listened to the song though.

  • not bad for being on a 4 year heroin and gin binge, go pete!

  • Ouch! Sorry, but this is a great song but TERRIBLE quality for the post.

  • i have never seen this video before

  • This was one of those "let's throw this in the video and see if it sticks" kind of projects. I remember seeing this video a few times on MTV, and I thought the song was pretty cool. I really never paid attention to the video itself until now. Really innovative for its time.

Boy...don't you love 80's music? It was a lot more fun to listen to than today's stuff. 80's videos were pretty neat too...music videos were a new concept, so anything went. LONG LIVE THE 80'S!!!!!

  • A day in the life of Pete maybe. But yes, The 80's were great, catch heat all the time at work for diggin the eights.

  • Okay..

I really like this song, and Pete is a genius. But.. am I the only one who thinks those robots are really fucking scary? Especially the one in the cupboard and the three singing waiters, or whatever they are.

    Nightmares.

  • This also is my favorite Townshend song; but this video is no less "out there" than Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" video. Trivia factoid: the monkey that is shown in the video is the same monkey that was in "Raiders of The Lost Ark".

  • my fav solo pete song, never saw the vid, thanks for posting!

  • great song

  • un bonito video y sencillo del gran pete townshend

  • absolutely fantastic....this video was far before the times...loved it when it came out and love it now...

  • i agree

  • I would rather hear Pete play the guitar than watch him shave. Saw a guitar, didn't hear it. Pete and the Who are great, but this song sucks. The vid was still cool, thanks for posting it.

  • he scratched the fret board what else do you want from the man

  • He was trying to get away from his 'guitar hero' image at the time. When he toured around that time, he'd only sing and play acoustic guitar, leaving the soloing and riffing to someone else.

  • Ditto on this comment... "Terrific song! One of his best. Very innovative use of 5/8 time. Yeah, the video is a bit out there, but still fun to watch".

  • Terrific song! One of his best. Very innovative use of 5/8 time. Yeah, the video is a bit out there, but still fun to watch.

  • this is a awesome song!

  • I wonder if Pete would shave his balls that fast?!

  • Lolz! Funny thought. PeacexXx!!!

  • Well I take that comment back on one front... the first 5 seconds (in a crude way) remind me Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer video...also some of Pete's vocals sounds like Peter...was he guesting on this album and having creating input on this video? That would make sense.

  • Would make sense except this video was done in 1983 about 5 yrs before Peter Gabriels Sledgehammer

  • I think Pete was listening to too much Devo & Styx that day.

  • Agreed

  • This song will alwyas remind me of Atari Missle Command. I used to watch MTV downstairs after my parents went to bed than plug in Atari. Funny how memory works.

  • I shave in the shower

  • This is about the most retarded music video ever, next to Britney Spears' "Toxic"

  • I remember seeing this in 80's on MTV when they still played videos, using a mechanical cable box to switch channels.

  • I remember those boxes! On our system, MTV was on the far right side of the top row.

  • Yes, i remember those too. For us (ny) we had Mtv on ch.29 back then, it was bottom row. Good memories. PeacexXx!!!

  • One of Pete's best solo songs... Love the video

  • Regarding the robots, has anyone noticed that the one appears to be similar to Crow in MST3000? Btw, I shave twice that fast everyday. You electric razor guys take up too much time in the bathroom.

  • I thought it looked familiar!

  • Looks to me more like Tom Servo.

  • many people don't know this but the robots were created by Roger Ruskin-Spear of the Bonzo Dog band

  • neat! thanks for posting that.

  • Pete is so cool. Wish he still had his hair. God loves him so....

  • gotta love the 80's

  • there's probably no blade in that razor. nobody can shave that fast and clumsily without cutting themself.

  • Pete shaves way to fast!! Makes me cringe just watching

    /Dont cut yourself Pete!

    //forgot he doesnt bleed; he's a god

  • Man, I havn`t seen that in almost 25 years

  • I had this album in'82, I liked it, this song and 'Slit Skirts' were classics

  • I love this album to death.

This is one of the best pop songs in 5/4 time ever.

This album is a masterpiece... that some poeple don't appreciate it's genius just shows how far over their heads it is.

  • Hey for289, I agree! I played this record to death. Pete's solo albums are challenging, and I bet he had these songs lying around because The Who couldn't grasp 'em. Roger complained at the time that Pete kept the good tunes for his solos, but I think Pete knew better. Also, I just noticed that Pete looks like he dressing to go play a round of golf

  • well i always appreciated it. thanks for pointing out the 5/4 time signature. i completely missed that.

  • Didn't Pete write, "I hope I die before I get old"?

    Didn't happen.

  • No, it didnt for the WHO's leader. But for their drummer extraordinaire, he lived it and then succumbed to it. RIP KEITH MOON....

    THE WHO

    LONG LIVE ROCK!

  • creepy. i like it.

  • A cool detail about this song is its meter. It is written in 5/4 (except for the "La la" M8). (The only Pete song I can think of in that meter.) Another thing: the two interlocking melodies at the end are reminiscent, in a good way, of Quadrophenia (the "song")... don't ya think?

  • Yeah Steph good point!! Pete has another NEW solo song called "2000 Years" that he performed on 'IN THE ATTIC' back in March and it's in 5/4 time. I

t is posted here on YOUTUBE so check it out!!

    THE WHO

    LONG LIVE ROCK!!

  • That robot in the bathroom was creepy! That gold robot does resemble Crow from Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  • Brilliant. This is the era of Pete that got me into playing a Flying V (and more interested in The Who). I loved this song when I was like 12-13, and even moreso now. Thanks for posting it!

  • This is good in retrospect, but when it first came out I was like "write a rock n' roll song already and play yer guitar." This is Pete obtuse and synthesizer-centric.

  • I fucking love you Pete.

  • hi, greetings from Argentina. Pete es like a God to me. Thanks a lot for this video it the firts time I see you!!

  • I wasn't going to buy this album (I've got empty glass)cos it would get a bad review but for some reason a good score (like out of 5 or whatever), It was like the reviews were the critics apologys for liking the album. But the more i hear from it the better it sounds, that guy is a genius

  • I like the lip synching barbershop quartet robots.

  • Yeah, I was so glad to get a copy of this whole video on VHS with all the videos for this album. I also love all of the robots, this is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting it.

  • OMFG O.o
