While we continue to advance technologies such as Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) that help service providers provide high quality last mile access to residences, the focus of the CRS-3 announcement is on the core of the network. It is about providing service providers, the ability to build the backbone of the next-generation Internet, which will witness a surge in video traffic, proliferation of mobile devices (end points) and increased adoption of cloud computing by enterprises.
The router that is being talked about is just for Internet service providers. It is to help speed up the core of the Internet also known as the "Internet backbone." Since this is not made for consumers but instead for service providers, the full cost is $90,000. getting speeds like this at home is dependent upon the service providers not necessarily the CRS-3. It could still be a few years before this is fully implemented and can be fully tapped into.
It's nice to know that Cisco is thinking about the capacity of the internet backbones, and making it viable within their equipment to be able to reach such high bandwidth figures, but the fact of the matter is, it's typically the 'last mile' in which speed is goverened to a typical residential user, whether that us based on DSL attentuation etc, or carrier limiting.
Thank you for visiting our channel today. John was eager to talk about the CRS-3 and was kind enough to record his comments while on-the-move at Mobile World Congress last month. Mobile video devices (like the Flip) are really handy when a studio production isnt possible.
