if i ever get to 90 and still can strum a few songs on my porch, then i'll be a happy old man. pete is some one to admire and learn from in a large range of life's aspects. on him for being himself.
That sorta broght tears to my eyes. Now, I need to go mend my ego by watching some dimestore McRapper talk crap about how bad he is, and feel that I am the one who he is rapping about to make myself feel like a "True G".
What has happened with the petition to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize? Compared to the other recipients of the award, Pete is a giant among midgets.
Pete is the real thing. I was at a music festival in a wooded area one time some years back. Walking from one stage to another I came across a little open space, Pete singing with a small crowd. Couldn't believe the "great" Pete Seeger would be singing impromptu like that. But not only was he singing his heart, he got all of us singing our hearts out. Didn't feel like I was singing with a star - felt like I was singing with God which was all of us together.
I was a backup singer all my life and a minor rock star in the 90s , but after 40 years of singing he taught me to *sing* - in one afternoon in Riverside Park. I hope he lives to be 1000.
Pete is Pete is Pete is Pete...man I love him plus he doesn't seem to have changed the least bit since the glorious Rainbow Quest-days - still fighting for a better world and standing up for the right thing to do! Pete you're a legend!!!
Dale1966tgo; If you knew a little more about the man and his times you'd know that he has travelled the world speaking his mind, in battlegrounds like Northern Ireland, in Communist countries in the 1960's, and his integrity stands head and shoulders above most. He is what the REAL America is about- Freedom for all.
May your ignorance turn to bliss, you silly little man
It is great that others are lucky to have Pete Seeger to look up to and sing his songs of freedom and joy for life. I can listen to his songs all the time. Peace is worth singing for. I do hope that all new song writers follow his philosophy on life. in the USA, Freedom always prevails, an end to the war is somthing we all look forward to. God Bless our soldiers and all who protect and protest the war. May they came to an end forever, Enjoy the world you live .God Bless America.
people like Pete gives us the hope for a better future for all. Thanks spiritual granpa! Your apearance by Lisbon in the '80s'll never be forgothen. WE SHALL OVERCOME! That's a fact.
standing up for what is right is what makes seeger great. How personable he is and caring is what makes him so cherished. The musicians you listed are good, but you have to be shallow minded to think their more skilled, only different. Let me guess you think the Iraq war was a good decision ? That mentality seems to run with outspoken ignorant people as yourself. Also, its easy to voice an opinion of others, whats your claim to fame ?
Pete Seeger is a national treasure. Those you trash Pete are the same people who would like to see the destruction of labor unions, and a return to working conditions of the 19th century. Pete's detractors are the same people who support US wars of agressions to enhance US corporations like Haliburton and Bechtel, and the oil companies. Those who dislike Pete are the type of peope who get a perverse joy out of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, union busting and militarism. Sing on Pete.
If you allow me, dear friend, Peter is World heritage treasure. For it responds to people's needs distributed all over the world. No fronteers when we feel Human and some don't let us be free. That is, Human.
Thank you, singers and friends. Your words kill fascists.
Hmm. Curious comment. I would agree that much of the so-called "folk" music is elitist, formalist rubbish. How many working class or poor folks do you associate with daily? How many can identify Seeger or any other "folk" musician. What qualifies as "folk" music and who has the authority to define it for the rest of us? Pop, Rock, Jazz, R&B, Latin, & Country are today's folk musics because folks are singing with them. They are not singing with the Seegers or the Peters, Pauls, and Marys.
martin luther king was involved in the american communist party, his march was funded by no other then the american communist jewish party. most of his speeches were written by his jewish communist attorney. not exactly like america has been telling you the truth. he also plagiarized his theses. and they gave him the title of doctor.WOW!! if that would have been a white man, he would have been kicked out from school immediately. lies have become the norm in this society.

I always preferred the more skilled, challenging, adventurous, and modern music and words of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Miles Davis, Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Gil-Scot Heron, George Clinton, Mahavishnu Orchestra....

I gew up along the Mohawk River near the Hudson. Seeger and the Sloop folks came to my school when I was about 8 years old, sirca 1966 perhaps. I remember the adults being very excited. I remember the music and musicianship was mediocre and the performances were overdone with the hokey facial expressions and over-animated gesturing. I didn't get it then. I still don't.
Thanks for the memories, stories, and songs, Pete! My father, Tom Hunter, was a big fan and had a lot of respect for you and your music. Thanks again for doing what you do and have a fantastic birthday!
I'll hope to be in the states for his 100th birthday celebration (if he lives that long).
