I was thinking of doing an LS1 or 2 swap but then I was like porsche is famous for making small(er) engines go really fast. Kinda defeats the purpose. It would still be cool. May take away from the value though.
Info is from my own experience. I have a 944 that I am putting a LS1 into. Point is: the LS1 only slightly heavier (340lbs for the orginal Porsche engine vs 434lbs for the LS1). With the relocation of the battery to the rear, 50/50 balance is virtually maintained. For the amount of horsepower gained, the LS1 upgrade is a great choice for anyone looking to beef up their 944!
the porsche 944 forum clearly says it's an aluminium alloy engine. i'm sure if you live in america the ls-swap is a good idea since you can find lots of parts for it. have a nice day :)
but you don't gain any weight if you remove the AC, especially since the 4 cyl had the entire turbo setup and isn't known for being a particularly light engine (even though it is aluminum).
@J12AF91 Are you high? Maybe on mars... look it up the lightest 944 to come out of production was OVER 2500lbs and the 85.5 and newer models weighed closer to 2700-2900lbs depending on options
6000+ usually in parts alone if you choose to do all the necessary part swaps. With a shop doing this for you i would guess somewhere around 14k and up.
The weight dist stays 50/50 with the LS1 and around 51/49 with the LT1 or 4

Is it possible to put the Corvette transaxel to the car?
ROCKSOLID19 1 month ago
Ah, correct my last post. The 944 weighs about 2750 pounds, not 2500.
Tundramensch 6 months ago
But of course with the 400 hp Chevy V-8 it will not weigh 2500 lb any more.

Hey I'm putting a ls1 in my 87 944. What did you do for the rear end if anything!

With a LS2 totally installed it is actually 8 pounds lighter in the front. I have a 82 944 and want to do this to it.

Shut the hell up, you wannabe Porsche Elitist...

Putting the LSx into the 944 is one of the smartest things you can do to gain quick power.
The motor weighs just about the same as the heave 2.5L(usually 50lbs diff which could be easily rebalanced by moving stuff around).
There are obvious cooling issues, thats why you upgrade the radiator.
The swap is also fairly easy considering you are working on a 944....

WOW....i believe that scream said BAD IDEA!!!
seriously...a 400 hp chevy V8 in a 2500lb porsche...your asking for trouble...or a hell of alotta fun.

yeah but when you stick a v8 in it it wont be 2500 lb. and don't say the v8 is all aliminium because the origanal porsche engine is too

how much does a swap like this cost (engine and labor) and how nadly does it set of the weight distribution?
