  • There are so many things wrong with this performance. Aside from the fact that there is BELTING in the song (last time I checked, Christine is a soprano), your vibrato is off the charts in places it shouldn't be and your gesticulations are reminiscent of a 4th grader in acting camp. I seldom say this, but less is more with this song. Less in terms of vibrato, hand motions, and overall performance. Just be.

  • @RussellStephens6132 Seriously? Why be a cunt instead of supporting a fellow actor/singerl? At first I assumed that you were just an old, douchebag-y cynic, but then I watched some of your videos: yikes! Man, for someone criticizing another's acting, you have a lot of nerve. Look at your "Meadowlark," for example. AWFUL performance. Your own "gesticulations" are almost as distracting as your complete lack of breath support and do little to mask your general awkwardness. Katie's belting? Gorg.

  • your soprano is gorgeous. nice actor choices, a little strong with your arm gestures and your lower register needs some work you sound like you were struggling....

  • The accent and belt is alittle much.

  • honey, you dont BELT phantom.

the intensity should still be there, but in your freaking head voice!

  • i think it sounds fine. :)

  • @LittleN1921 lol true but still good in a unique way :)

  • WHEW!!!! "Why can't the past just die?" was absolutely phenomenal. one of the best interpretations of this song i've heard to date. fantastic voice, and fabulous performer.

  • Very beautiful. :) Sounds good enough for Broadway.

  • you're a star. this is a great interpretation. I've never heard it belted like that before.

  • that was wonderful. you have an awesome talent. it felt kind of angry towards the end though. that was a little akward. but there's no denying that your singing is incredible.

  • Overall that was fantastic, but at 2:36 you should not have belted the "Try". It felt out of place and was sort of a scream.

  • what does "belted" mean?

  • you're incredible!

i am so mad that i missed Elon's production. I heard about it when I got a flyer in the mail. But I'm coming and auditioning for the music theatre program in two months.. so I'm very excited (but nervous because I want to get into the program!)

  • Holy Moly! This is amazing.

  • you are absolutely incredible. your voice is amazing -- so pure and prominent. great job! the vibrato was beautifully done. :D keep singing. :D

  • all i know is: this girl is great. and if this is the talent elon is putting out, I definitely want to go there :)

  • so much sound coming from a little person...bravo!

  • i didnt like the beginning much( i think i spelled beginning wrong?) but it definatly got better

  • amen to that!!

  • I saw this actress perform as Christine in the ACTUAL musical POTO @ Elon University in February 2008...in costume...in character...she was AMAZING...gave me chills...you HAD to be THERE! She stole the show!!!!

  • You were there? Can you give us a indepth review of the show?

  • They did a supurb job with POTO (The Phantom & Christine were both EXCELLENT!) and Elon was proud to be the 2nd college in the country to perform this show! The actress singing here is performing Christine's song out of context and she still does an awesome job!

  • That's cool! I was lucky enough to see Baldwin-Wallace's production of POTO.

  • sorry

    didn't mean to offend

    x

  • nope. I'm only mean to offensive people and you've offended me. get out.

  • yeah i'm an expert =S whatever,

    get over it

    i say my opinion

    other people say theirs

    you've definetly said yours

now can you stop being mean?

    =O

  • NOw to be fair, we should all take xxpoppiestarxx's opinion seriously. After all, she did watch the movie...that means she must be a total expert.....:)

  • In response to a previous comment, if you know anything about vocal technique or musical theatre you know that emmy rossum was horribly miscast (at least vocally). Katie managed to bring an entire house to tears every time she performed this song. She has completely mastered this piece emotionally and vocally which is what its about. I would rather see her gorgeous acting than a blank face and a "pure" voice. She can do what she wants, she's earned it.

  • well, i think katie is amazing

and i was definitely in the room when this was sung... hahaha

she's so great, and the actualy production was incredible

  • thank you very much. i think katie is amazing, too. :) i suspect this is georgina and if i am correct, let me be the first to say that we are so excited to have you at elon next year!

  • yeah, it is georgina.

and i'm so excited to be at elon next year!

  • your username is exitmusic5

    how embarrasing?

    how is my username embarresing?

i think you should stop being mean !

just because i said what i thought,

    posotive critism?

    she is outstanding in places!

    i said that..

  • if you are speaking of the emmy rossum version, that is some of the most dreadful singing in the entire world.

plus, your username is xxpoppiestarxx. how embarrassing.

  • I'm sorry, but it sounds like she's screaming. This is supposed to be sung in an operatic fashion, it's not "Wicked."

  • have you actually listened to your own video of the same song? you have some SERIOUS intonation problems. and your vibrato is disgustingly wide. there is absolutely no meaning attached to any of the words in your version. this young woman, on the other hand, has FILLED her performance with some of the best acting i've ever seen. and what you refer to as screaming is probably just her impeccable use of dynamics. in conclusion, you're an idiot.

  • In conclusion, you're a prick. I wasn't even being that rude, I was just saying my opinion, but you had to get personal and show how ignorant you are by saying that being loud through the whole song is a good use of dynamics.

  • What is perfect anyway? This is perfectly beautiful.

  • Um you had better hold it down over there xxpoppiestarxx. She's perfect and you know it.

  • keep in mind that this was at like 9:00 in the morning...and she didn't know she was going to sing up until 5 min before hand

  • Great job, Katie! It was beautiful!

    -Claire

  • For my taste, I thought the song was a little too belty at times. I would have wanted still strong but more legit at points. For instance on the "try" keep it legit.

  • Still it was still beautiful performed!

  • Rudeex00- that's how Christine's are supposed to sound. And another thing, you were too powerful around "Three long years..." and "To many years..." and most Christine's aren't like that until the final word "die" at the end of that phrase. Great job, though! Was this rehearsal?

  • shes not supposed to sound like christine shes supposed to sound like herself cuz if she sound like christine then why would any opera things want her?

  • Why is she supposed to sound like herself? Yes, she sounds like herself, but she is singing Christine's song. She's in character. But I really don't get what you're trying to say.

  • yeah, she's playing a part, but she is making it her own. Not every christine is supposed to sound exactly the same. Not only are peoples voices naturally different, but people interpret parts differently. Thats what makes theatre interesting, it's never the same.

  • I was trying to say that her voice fits Christine's part well.

  • OperaSoubrette, I agree with you. The reason this is an issue is because Christine's voice is supposed to be light and pure... UNLIKE Carlotta's voice. Carlotta had a voice which was so powerful, people would get annoyed because it was too overwhelming. Christine's voice was supposed to be like the Anti-Carlotta. So I understand your point.

BUT, this girl's voice is still beautiful nonetheless.

  • I would just like to point out that the reason Christine has to sing loud at that particular moment you all were discussing is because the orchestra is going crazy. In the actual show score, every single instrument in the orchestra is wailing right at that moment and if she wasn't belting, you wouldn't hear her on stage at all. For cds sound levels can easily be adjusted so that when recorded softly, Christine is still heard over orchestration, but that is not the case in live theatre.

  • n you sound more like La Carlata with the intense vibrato towards the end.

  • nice. too much vibrato in the verses n sometimes in the chorus

  • wow are you serious? the show is called phantom of the OPERA. too much vibrato my ass.

  • Yes, but Christine is supposed to an unconventional opera singer, thats why the phantom beleives in her and coaching her.

Also, thats very harsh. It is the directors interpretation of show, it is his/hers job to give their own interpretation and style in it...

    I liked her!

  • im saying that shes amazing. thats what i meant. i loved the vibrato, i was responding to someone who made some dumb comment about too much vibrato.

  • sorry, i replied to the wrong person.... Sorry, wrong person. lol!

  • almost 1000 views in 2 weeks...I guess that means your pretty fierce!

  • u sound exactlt like the person who played Christine in the play

  • Yay Katie!! Way to be!!!! You rock my socks off!

    <3 Haley B.

  • u rock kate's on u tube and i knew her before she was famous

  • Hi Katie-

    You sound great!

    Kyle Dean

  • Well Kemerson you know you've arrived when you get on Youtube!!!!

  • she is incredible.

    srsly...no words.

  • Wow. Your voice is amazing. Good luck!

  • She does an excellent job with this song. Although the camera is a little too far for me to really see her face, I can still hear the emotion in her voice. I'm sure she'll have a great career ahead of her.

Thank you for uploading this. I had been VERY curious to hear some of the young singers from the newly allowed school productions of "Phantom of the Opera". :-)

  • B-W has a channel on here though there are no clips from phantom you can here the people who were in it. Libby Servais and Emily Leonard played Christine.
