Watching these poems on HBO was truly an experience. The courage and wisdom of these young people, wise beyond their years, was one of the most inspiring events that I've ever witnessed. I loved every poem and this one was among the best of the best. To

Look slam poetry can be approached from so Manu different angles. Is the writing that good? It's usually alright, often times the metaphors are trying too hard, and people kind of drone on sometimes and forget that so much can be said in so little. This is where manbearpig takes his point. However, I think the art is the performance. How you deliver it, combined with what you deliver. The spoken emotion makes up for the sometimes lack in writing style and beauty.
@philliesphan804 there are so many styles & forms within slam poetry, your generalization is just ridiculous.Thats like saying,Opera is okay.All of the acting is horrible, and they usually have shitty costuming, but they hit high notes, so that makes up for the rest.u cnt make that all-encompassing judgement. Slam poetry,at its heart,is about the message (content, theme), writing, and the performance.Since all of these things are unique to each poet and vary from poem 2 poem, there's no USUALLY.
Some people just don't enjoy slam poetry... It's no different than people not liking romance novels or something like that... Challenging its validity is stupid though... Great poem and great performance!
@bleedingjesus remember when you took a Lit. class and learned that not only does poetry NOT have to rhyme to be poetry, but MOST of it, does not. Poetry is obviously at a much higher level of understanding than the one you possess...You should stick to Dr. Seuss..

This deserves a 2 at best. Slam poetry is to artistic expression what Monster Energy Drink is to beverages and these kids are pathetic for thinking that they deserve a 7 when their work is terrible.

They aren't qualified to run he fryer at McDonalds, or objectively judge the artistic merit of a bloodfart. If they think their poem is worth a 7, they're sorely mistaken and the only reason they made a poem about scores is because they have nothing else of worth to say because they are empty shells with nothing to offer.
