WOW has this place changed. Born here in 1962 and left 21 years later. Lived up near Hurtmore garage in Mark Way. Never been back, not sure that I would recognise much of it now...loads of strret furniture and traffic calming. What ever happened to the old Cafe down at the Wharf near Police Station? Top place !! Jim Park Audio next to Waitrose. Laceters (?) the ironmongers in Church Street, Willow press on the road down to the library (used to be a great angling shop on same road).
The wharf cafe was demolished to make the new waitrose car park, the old waitrose is now a witherspoons pub, allchornes tackle shop is now a wool shop. I've lived in Godalming since 1977 and i prefer the old town. Greets from charterhouse road.
I as surpised to see Allchornes go as well, shame, was a the perfect fishing shop, complete with maggot storage out the back :-) Other places I miss, Geno's coffee shop opposite the Richmond Arms, spent many days in there with the rest of the scooter club, or downstairs in their games cellar, the Ram cider house (the people who turned that into flats will surely burn in hell). And now they've turned the Anchor into some god-awful chain bar.
Thank you very much for giving me a little climb about this wonderful place. I'm sure there is a better way to get more out about English tradition than on the place I am living here. Perhaps I will be able to come down to see it all in person before leaving this country in bitterness and sadness because of living on the wrong side over here.
